At the cheaper end, they discolour quickly and can become brittle after a few seasons of UV exposure. Buy from reputable suppliers and check the specific frost and UV rating before committing.
Sizing: Getting the Pot-to-Rootball Ratio Right
Too small and the plant becomes pot-bound, stressed, and difficult to water correctly. Too large and the excess compost stays wet around the roots, which is the fast track to root rot. The rule of thumb that works: choose a pot that is approximately 5–8cm larger in diameter than the rootball at the time of planting, then size up as the plant grows.
For most lollipop standards and ball-on-stem forms at typical entrance sizes (100–150cm including pot), a minimum internal diameter of 40cm is the working baseline.
