The spirals

The conifer rule — the one hard law
Never cut into the bare inner wood: like almost all conifers, Gold Rider does not regrow from old brown wood, so a cut past the green surface is a permanent hole. All trimming happens on the green — light, frequent passes over the foliage, never a hard renovation. Respect this one law and the plant is close to unbreakable.
One or two light trims
The vigour that built the shape needs steering, not fighting: a light all-over trim in late spring, and a second tidy in early autumn if you like the surface crisp. Little and often on the green surface — each pass is minutes, and the sculpted form stays sharp without ever risking the rule above.
Sun is the colour dial
The gold is photosynthetic jewellery: full sun produces the richest, warmest colour; light shade relaxes it to lime-gold — still handsome, just quieter. Site the pair where they catch real sun for the register you bought them for, and give the showiest face of each plant the open aspect.
Water the first year, drain forever
A deep soak once or twice a week through the first spring and summer while the rootball establishes — the first-year guide maps it — then established plants largely look after themselves.
