The colour calendar
The big flush arrives in spring — and then every trim triggers an encore about three weeks later, as the cut surface answers with a sheet of flame-red new growth. Two trims a year, late spring and late summer, and you are the conductor: time a clip three weeks before the occasion and the pair turns red on cue.
Sun is the dimmer switch
The red runs on light. Full sun gives the loudest flush; part shade is tolerated but dials the colour down with it. Give the pair the brightest, most open position on offer — it is fully hardy and notably wind-tolerant, so exposure holds no fear.
The leaf-spot honesty
In a wet year photinia can pick up leaf spot — dark marks on older foliage, cosmetic rather than fatal. The management is housekeeping, not chemistry: airflow between plants, fallen leaves cleared in autumn, and water aimed at the soil rather than the foliage, per the pests guide. The next red flush replaces what was marked.
Water the first year
