1. Introduction
There's a particular satisfaction in choosing the right container—running your hand along the rim of a beautifully glazed pot, measuring its proportions against your doorway, imagining how it will look in five, ten, twenty years' time. This is the moment your topiary pair transitions from nursery stock to permanent fixture, from plants in transit to anchors of your entrance.
Your topiary will arrive in sturdy black nursery pots, the same utilitarian containers used by professional growers across Europe. They've done their job admirably—protecting roots, maintaining moisture, supporting growth—but they're not designed for display. Now comes the rewarding work of giving your plants the home they'll occupy for decades.
Most of our customers choose to showcase their topiary in containers. It's an elegant solution: doorways flanked by matched pairs in handsome pots, terraces anchored by architectural forms, entrances framed by evergreen structure. Containers offer flexibility—you can adjust positioning, move plants seasonally, protect tender specimens in winter, and replace pots as your taste evolves without disturbing the plants themselves.
For those with garden borders and the right conditions, planting directly in the ground creates a different kind of permanence. Roots spread into native soil, plants grow slightly larger over time, and the effect is one of establishment and maturity. Both approaches have their merits. Both, done properly, will reward you with decades of beauty.
This guide will walk you through both methods, though we'll focus primarily on container planting—the choice of seven in ten of our customers. Whether you're repotting for a terrace or planting a border, the principles remain: proper preparation, careful technique, and patient aftercare.
The first year determines the next twenty. Let's get it right.
2. The Question of Timing
There's an old gardening adage that the best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, and the second-best time is today. It's meant to be encouraging, but like most gardening wisdom, it oversimplifies. Timing matters—perhaps not as much as technique, but enough that getting it right makes everything that follows easier.
Spring planting has much to recommend it. From mid-March through early May, as the soil warms and days lengthen, plants are naturally inclined toward growth. Roots extend into fresh compost with vigour, new shoots emerge, and the entire growing season stretches ahead. There's something psychologically satisfying about spring planting too—you're working with nature's momentum rather than against it. The regular rainfall of British springs does half your watering work for you.
Autumn offers a quieter kind of perfection. September through mid-October, when the soil still holds summer's warmth but the air has cooled, creates ideal establishment conditions. Plants aren't under the stress of producing new growth; they can focus entirely on root development. By the time spring arrives, they're settled and ready. Autumn planting requires faith—you're tucking plants in for winter without the immediate gratification of visible growth—but experienced gardeners swear by it.
Summer planting is possible but demanding. The combination of heat, rapid moisture loss, and plants under stress from active growth means you're committing to vigilant watering. Miss a day in July and you may return to drooping foliage and set back establishment by weeks. If your topiary arrives in summer and you can't wait, container planting is more forgiving than in-ground—at least you can move pots to shadier positions during the worst heat.
Winter planting is really about winter potting, since true planting into frozen ground is impossible. You can repot into containers year-round if you're working in a shed or conservatory, though the plants won't actively establish until spring. They'll simply maintain, which is fine—sometimes maintenance is all we ask. In-ground planting waits for the soil to thaw and temperatures to moderate.
The ideal, if you have the luxury of choice, is late March or early September. But gardening rarely offers ideal conditions. Plant when you can, with attention to what the season demands of you. Spring requires regular watering but rewards with visible progress. Autumn requires patience but offers easier establishment. Both will get you where you need to go.
3. Gather What You'll Need
There's a temptation to rush straight from delivery to planting, but an hour spent in preparation saves days of correcting mistakes. Professional gardeners know this instinctively—half their time is spent in preparation, a quarter in execution, and the rest in standing back to assess. It's a ratio worth emulating.
For container planting, you'll need fewer tools than you might imagine. A decent trowel, though hands often work better for firming compost around roots. A watering can with a fine rose, or a hose with a gentle spray attachment—the goal is thorough saturation without washing compost away. Something to kneel on, unless your knees are more forgiving than mine. A spirit level isn't essential but helps ensure your pair stands truly vertical, which matters more than people think when you're after perfect symmetry.
The containers themselves deserve careful consideration, which we'll address in a moment. And compost—not just any compost, but the right compost, which is where many well-intentioned plantings go wrong. John Innes No. 3 is what you want: a loam-based mix with weight, structure, and staying power. It's old-fashioned in the best sense—proven over decades, reliable, forgiving of both underwatering and overwatering in ways that modern peat-based composts are not.
You'll see multipurpose compost recommended everywhere, often because it's cheap and ubiquitous. Resist the temptation. Multipurpose compost breaks down quickly, loses structure within a season or two, and becomes either hydrophobic when dry or waterlogged when wet. It's designed for bedding plants and vegetables, not permanent planting. John Innes No. 3 provides the ballast your topiary needs—literally, in that its weight prevents top-heavy plants from toppling, and figuratively, in that its structure supports healthy root systems for years.
If you're planting in the ground rather than pots, the tool list expands slightly: a sharp spade for clean cuts through turf and soil, a garden fork for breaking up compacted earth, a wheelbarrow for mixing amendments. You'll want well-rotted organic matter—garden compost or farmyard manure, aged enough that it crumbles rather than clumps. If your soil is heavy clay, add horticultural grit or sharp sand to improve drainage. If it's sandy and free-draining to the point of drought, more organic matter helps retain moisture.
Mulch, too, though this comes after planting. Bark chips are traditional and effective, composted wood chips break down to feed the soil, well-rotted manure does double duty as both mulch and slow-release fertilizer. The purpose is moisture retention, weed suppression, and that finished look that signals care and attention.
Stakes and ties if you're planting specimens over four feet tall in exposed positions, though modern thinking leans toward minimal staking—just enough to prevent wind rock while allowing the natural movement that strengthens stems. Tree ties with spacers are better than improvised string, which cuts into bark as the plant grows.
And time. Not much—an hour for a pair of container plantings if you're methodical, perhaps two hours for in-ground work—but uninterrupted time when you can focus on getting it right rather than rushing to finish before the light fades or the rain arrives.
4. Choosing Your Containers
If you're repotting your topiary into display containers—and most of you will be—the choice of pot matters almost as much as the planting itself. A beautiful plant in an ill-proportioned or inappropriate container never looks quite right, while the right pot elevates even a modest specimen into something special.
Size is the first consideration, and here the rule is generous. Your container should be substantially larger than the nursery pot, but not so large that the plant looks lost. As a general guide, the pot diameter should be at least a third of the plant's height. A four-foot topiary ball wants a container at least sixteen inches across; a six-foot spiral needs twenty-four inches minimum. These aren't arbitrary numbers—they reflect the root space required for stability and long-term health, plus the visual proportions that please the eye.
Depth matters as much as width. Topiary roots don't delve as deeply as you might imagine—most of the active root system occupies the top eighteen to twenty-four inches of soil—but the pot needs sufficient depth to accommodate a drainage layer beneath the rootball while still leaving the plant sitting at the proper height. A pot that's wider than it is deep rarely looks right with architectural topiary, though it can work for lower, spreading forms.
Weight is a consideration often overlooked until you're trying to move a planted container and discovering it weighs more than you do. Terracotta and glazed ceramic are heavy even empty, genuinely immovable once filled with damp John Innes and a mature plant. This has advantages—they won't blow over in wind, they provide stability for top-heavy standards—but commits you to a location. If you value the flexibility to rearrange, lighter materials make sense.
Terracotta brings that warm, Mediterranean quality that suits classical architecture and sunny courtyards. It's porous, allowing roots to breathe and excess moisture to evaporate through the pot walls, which is forgiving if you tend toward overwatering. The downside is that same porosity means faster drying in summer—you'll water more frequently than in glazed or plastic pots. Frost can crack cheaper terracotta, though good-quality frost-resistant versions are available. The patina that develops over time, that accumulation of mineral deposits and subtle weathering, is either charming or shabby depending on your aesthetic preferences.
Glazed ceramic offers the beauty of terracotta with better moisture retention and often superior frost resistance. The glaze seals the pot, so you lose that breathing quality but gain consistency—the compost dries at a predictable rate, making watering routines easier to establish. The color and finish options are nearly limitless, from subtle gray-greens that complement traditional architecture to bold contemporary glazes for modern settings. Quality varies dramatically; cheap imports may look beautiful but crack in the first hard frost. Buy the best you can afford.
Fiber glass and resin pots have come a long way from the obviously plastic planters of decades past. Modern versions replicate stone, lead, and ceramic convincingly while remaining frost-proof and relatively lightweight. They're practical for roof terraces where weight is a concern, or anywhere you want the look of expensive materials without the expense or mass. The very cheapest still look unmistakably artificial, but mid-range options can fool even experienced eyes. They lack the aging character of real stone or ceramic—they look new indefinitely—which may be a feature or a bug depending on your perspective.
Wooden containers, particularly Versailles-style boxes in oak or cedar, have a formality that suits period architecture and classical topiary. They insulate roots better than metal or ceramic, moderating temperature extremes. Quality construction matters enormously—cheap wooden planters deteriorate quickly, leaving you with a rotting container and the difficult job of transplanting an established specimen. Proper hardwood boxes, well-made with brass or stainless fittings, last decades. They're expensive and heavy, but there's no denying their presence.
Metal containers—zinc, copper, steel—bring a contemporary edge that works beautifully in modern settings. They conduct temperature, which can stress roots in extreme heat or cold, but this matters more in theory than practice if you're in the temperate British climate. Ensure they have adequate drainage holes; many decorative metal planters are designed for indoor use and lack them. Patina develops on copper and untreated steel, which is either desirable or not depending on whether you prefer maintained perfection or weathered character.
Whatever material you choose, drainage is non-negotiable. The pot must have multiple holes in the base—one central hole isn't sufficient—and ideally should sit on feet or a raised base allowing water to escape freely. More topiary dies from waterlogged roots than from drought, neglect, or pest damage combined. If you've fallen in love with a container that lacks drainage, you can drill holes yourself in most materials, though ceramic and stone require special masonry bits and patience.
Matching your pair of pots is obvious but worth stating: order two at once to ensure they're from the same production run. Glazes vary between batches, stone composite ages differently, even supposedly identical pots can show subtle variations if manufactured months apart. Buy your pair together, and if ordering online, open both immediately upon delivery to confirm they match.
The cost of good containers can exceed the cost of the plants themselves, which comes as a shock until you realise the pot is a permanent fixture while the plant is a living thing you're investing in for decades. A beautiful container is an architectural element, not just a planting vessel. Choose well, and you'll still be pleased with your decision when the topiary you've planted has doubled in size.
5. Container Planting
The actual process of potting is simpler than the preparation suggests, though that doesn't mean it should be rushed. There's a meditative quality to working with your hands in compost, the physical satisfaction of firming soil around roots, the simple pleasure of creating order. Allow yourself to enjoy it.
Begin with clean pots. If they're new, rinse away any manufacturing residue or labels. If they're being reused, scrub them thoroughly with diluted bleach—a capful in a bucket of water is sufficient—and rinse well. This eliminates any pathogens or pest eggs lurking from previous plantings. It's a small precaution that prevents future problems.
The drainage layer comes first: broken pottery crocks, large stones, or pieces of broken roof tile arranged over the drainage holes. This prevents compost from washing through the holes with each watering while ensuring water can still escape freely. Three to four inches of drainage material is about right for a large pot. Some gardeners add a layer of landscape fabric over the crocks before adding compost, which keeps the layers separate and drainage clear for years. It's not essential but does make eventual repotting cleaner.
Add John Innes No. 3 to roughly the depth that will position your plant correctly. You want the top of the rootball to sit about two inches below the pot's rim once planting is complete—this creates a reservoir for watering while keeping the root flare visible. Better to add too little compost initially than too much; you can always add more, but removing it once the plant is positioned is awkward.
Remove your topiary from its nursery pot gently but firmly. Sometimes they slide out easily; sometimes roots have woven through drainage holes and require patient persuasion. If it's particularly stubborn, water it thoroughly thirty minutes before and the rootball will release more readily. Turn the pot upside down, supporting the plant's weight with your other hand, and ease it free.
The rootball will likely be dense, the exterior covered with circling roots. This is normal—nursery pots encourage roots to follow the container walls—but those circling roots need gentle encouragement to grow outward into fresh compost rather than continuing their circular pattern. Tease out the most obvious circling roots with your fingers, pulling them away from the rootball. If roots are particularly congested, make three or four shallow vertical cuts down the sides of the rootball with a sharp knife, about half an inch deep. It seems brutal but breaks the circular pattern and stimulates new root growth. The plant won't notice; roots regenerate remarkably quickly.
Position the plant in its new container, checking that it sits at the correct height and is truly vertical. A spirit level against the stem is more reliable than eye alone—we all have biases, and what looks straight at an angle rarely is. Rotate the plant so its best side faces forward, bearing in mind where you'll be viewing it most often. For doorway flanking, the plants should mirror each other if possible, creating that sense of deliberate pairing rather than random placement.
Once you're satisfied with position and alignment, begin filling around the rootball with more John Innes No. 3. Work compost down the sides with your fingers, ensuring no air pockets remain. Air pockets create dry zones where roots can't establish, and they're more common than you'd think—compost bridges across voids, leaving invisible gaps. Push your fingers down between the rootball and pot sides, firming as you go.
Fill in stages, adding three or four inches of compost, firming it, then adding more. The goal is contact between roots and compost without compaction. Firm means you can press compost down with your fingers or thumbs and feel slight resistance; it doesn't mean stomping with your full weight, which compacts the soil and crushes the delicate air spaces roots need. If you can indent the compost easily, firm it a bit more. If you're pressing hard and getting nowhere, ease off.
Fill to about an inch below the pot rim, leaving that watering reservoir we discussed. The original rootball should be just visible or barely covered—seeing that transition between old and new compost confirms you've planted at the correct depth. If you've buried the rootball deeply, the stem will be in contact with constantly moist compost, inviting collar rot. Too shallow, and roots will be exposed to drying air.
Water immediately and thoroughly. Use a can with a fine rose or a gentle hose spray, watering the compost surface rather than drenching the foliage. Water should soak in readily; if it pools or runs off, you haven't quite achieved the right firmness. Add more water than seems necessary—ten to fifteen liters for a large pot—until water runs from the drainage holes and you're confident every bit of compost is saturated. This initial watering settles the compost, eliminates remaining air pockets, and brings roots into immediate contact with moisture.
The compost level may drop an inch as it settles. Wait ten minutes, then top up with more compost and water again. This is why you leave a generous watering reservoir—it allows for settling and ensures you can water thoroughly without overflow washing compost away.
A top dressing of mulch completes the planting: two inches of bark chips, gravel, or slate chippings serves multiple purposes. It conserves moisture by shading the compost surface, suppresses any weed seeds present in the compost, and gives a finished, professional appearance. Keep mulch a few inches away from the plant stem—piling it against bark invites fungal issues.
Stand back and assess. The plant should look settled, not perched awkwardly. The compost surface should be level with the pot's shoulder, not heaped or sunken. The plant should stand truly vertical when viewed from multiple angles. If something looks off, now is the time to adjust before the roots establish.
Position your pair with the same attention to detail. Measure from your doorframe or reference point to ensure symmetric placement. Check that both pots sit at the same height—even a centimeter difference becomes obvious when you're after perfect symmetry. Use a long spirit level or straight edge across both plants to confirm their tops are level with each other. Step back twenty feet and look at them as you'll see them daily. Make minor adjustments now rather than living with misalignment for years.
The work is done. What remains is care, which is lighter than you might imagine.
6. Planting Into The Ground
Not everyone has the space or inclination for container planting. If you're fortunate enough to have garden borders and soil that drains reasonably well, planting directly in the ground creates a different kind of permanence. Your topiary becomes part of the landscape rather than an ornament within it. The approach differs in specifics but shares the same underlying principles: preparation, technique, aftercare.
Site assessment comes first. Drainage is everything—literally everything, since poor drainage kills more plants than all other factors combined. Dig a test hole a foot deep where you intend to plant, fill it with water, and see what happens. If it drains within twenty-four hours, you have workable drainage. If water remains after a day, you have a problem that must be addressed before planting. Clay soil can be improved with organic matter and grit; truly waterlogged sites may need drainage channels or raised planting areas. Very occasionally, a site is simply unsuitable—better to know this now than after planting.
Soil type influences your approach. Heavy clay requires more preparation: digging wider rather than deeper, incorporating generous amounts of horticultural grit and organic matter, perhaps even planting on a slight mound to ensure water doesn't pool around the stem. Sandy, free-draining soil needs organic matter to retain moisture but is otherwise easier to work. Ideal loam requires minimal amendment beyond mixing in compost for nutrition.
Timing matters more for in-ground planting than container work. Spring and early autumn remain optimal, but you can't simply pot up during a cold snap and move the plant inside as you can with containers. Wait for the soil to be workable—not frozen, not waterlogged, not so dry it's dusty. Wait for conditions that allow you to dig and improve soil without fighting the elements.
Clear your planting area of all weeds, particularly persistent perennials like couch grass, bindweed, or ground elder. They're harder to remove once the topiary is planted, and they compete vigorously for water and nutrients during the critical establishment period. Remove turf completely; don't just bury it.
The planting hole should be wider than deep—twice the width of the rootball but only as deep as the rootball's height. This seems counterintuitive until you understand root behaviour: most active roots grow horizontally in the top layers of soil where oxygen is abundant. A deep hole encourages water to collect at the bottom, creating conditions roots avoid rather than seek.
Mix the soil you've excavated with organic matter at a rough ratio of three parts soil to one part compost. Break up any clods to a fine texture. If you're adding mycorrhizal fungi—beneficial fungi that colonise roots and extend their effective reach—mix it into the backfill now according to package directions. It's not essential but does aid establishment.
Remove your plant from its nursery pot as you would for container planting. Inspect the rootball, tease out circling roots, score the sides if particularly root bound. This is your last chance to intervene before the roots grow into permanent positions.
Position the plant in the hole at exactly the same depth it was growing in the pot. Not deeper—never deeper. Planting too deep is the single most common fatal mistake. The point where stem meets roots, often visible as a slight flare or colour change, should be at or fractionally above soil level. Check from multiple angles; a few minutes' attention to this saves months of disappointment when a deeply planted topiary struggles or dies from collar rot.
Begin backfilling with your improved soil, working it carefully around the rootball. Use your hands to push soil into spaces, ensuring no air pockets. Fill in layers, firming each with gentle foot pressure before adding more. You want good contact between roots and soil without compaction. If you bounce on it or stomp heavily, you've overdone it.
Fill to the original soil level, creating a shallow berm or basin around the plant about eighteen inches wider than the rootball. This directs water toward the roots rather than running off across the surface. The berm needn't be dramatic—two or three inches high is sufficient—but it makes watering far more efficient.
Water thoroughly, filling your watering basin several times until water no longer soaks in quickly. This initial watering is perhaps even more critical than with container planting, since it settles the soil and ensures complete contact between roots and earth. Twenty to thirty litres isn't excessive for a good-sized topiary.
Stake if necessary, though modern thinking favours minimal staking. A plant allowed to flex slightly in the wind develops stronger wood and roots that anchor more effectively. Stakes should only prevent the rootball rocking—that movement which severs newly formed roots before they can establish. Drive your stake at an angle into undisturbed soil at the edge of the rootball, not through it. Attach with a spacer tie that allows some movement but prevents the catastrophic rocking that undoes establishment. Check ties every few months, loosening as the stem thickens, removing entirely after twelve to eighteen months.
Mulch completes the planting: a four-inch layer of bark chips, well-rotted manure, or composted wood chips spread over the entire rootball area and extending a foot beyond. Keep it a few inches away from the stem. This mulch conserves moisture, suppresses weeds, moderates soil temperature, and adds organic matter as it breaks down over time. It's one of those simple interventions that makes everything that follows easier.
For a matched pair flanking a doorway or path, measure carefully before planting the second. They should be equidistant from your reference point—doorframe, path edge, building corner. Use a string line to ensure both are aligned properly. Check that tops are level with each other using a straight edge or spirit level. Step back and assess before backfilling the second hole; adjustments are easier before you've committed.
The work looks substantial written out but proceeds smoothly when you're actually doing it. An experienced gardener can plant a pair in perhaps two hours of methodical work. Speed isn't the goal; correctness is.
7. The First Year
The months following planting determine everything that comes after. Get this right and your topiary establishes strongly, develops resilient roots, and settles into decades of reliable growth. Rush this phase or neglect it, and you'll spend years coaxing along a plant that never quite thrives. The attention required isn't onerous—mostly it's consistency rather than intensity—but it is required.
Water is the great variable and the most common point of failure. Too little and the plant stresses, drops foliage, fails to establish new roots. Too much and roots rot in waterlogged compost or soil. The right amount depends on weather, container size, compost type, exposure, and season—which is to say there's no universal schedule, only guidelines and observation.
In the first week after planting, check soil moisture daily. Push your finger two inches into the compost or soil; if it feels dry at that depth, water thoroughly. If it feels moist, check again tomorrow. Container-grown topiary dries faster than you expect in warm weather, slower than you imagine in cool or cloudy conditions. In-ground plants in clay soil can remain moist for days; those in sandy soil dry remarkably quickly.
When you water, water thoroughly. A dribble that barely wets the surface does more harm than good, encouraging roots to concentrate near the surface where they're vulnerable to drying out. Water until you see it draining from container bases or soaking in deeply for in-ground plants. For containers, this means until water runs freely from drainage holes and compost is saturated throughout. For in-ground, fill your watering basin two or three times, letting it drain completely between fills.
As weeks pass and roots extend into fresh compost or soil, watering becomes less frequent but no less important. By the second month, container plants typically need watering every two to three days in warm weather, weekly in cool or damp periods. In-ground plants establish a rhythm based on soil type and rainfall: clay soil might need watering weekly in dry spells, sandy soil every few days. Rain complicates the calculation—two millimeters of drizzle barely wets the surface, while a thorough downpour might mean you don't water for a week.
Morning watering is ideal when you have a choice. Foliage dries through the day, reducing disease risk. Roots have the whole day to take up moisture before evening. It's not critical—evening watering works fine too—but morning does have marginal advantages.
Watch your plants for signs of stress. Slight drooping of foliage in midday sun isn't necessarily concerning if the plant recovers by evening—this is natural wilting as a heat-stress response. Persistent wilting, or foliage that doesn't recover by evening, signals insufficient water. Yellowing leaves, particularly lower leaves turning yellow and dropping, can indicate overwatering (if soil is soggy) or underwatering (if soil is dry). The plant tells you what it needs if you pay attention.
Feeding begins six to eight weeks after planting, not immediately. Newly planted roots are establishing and vulnerable to fertilizer burn. Once you see signs of active growth—new shoots extending, fresh foliage—you can begin feeding. A balanced liquid fertilizer diluted according to package instructions, applied every two to three weeks through the growing season, supports steady growth without forcing it. Slow-release granular fertilizers work too, particularly for containers; sprinkle according to package directions in early spring and again in midsummer.
Don't overfeed. More fertilizer doesn't mean faster growth or healthier plants; it means lush, soft growth prone to disease and pest damage, plus potential root burn. Follow package directions, perhaps even using slightly less than recommended. Architectural topiary succeeds through steady, strong growth, not explosive lushness.
Weeding around in-ground plants matters more than people realise. Weeds compete for water and nutrients during the critical establishment phase. Keep the mulched area weed-free, pulling any that emerge while they're small. Once the topiary is established, a few weeds won't affect it significantly, but in year one, every weed is competition.
Staking requires periodic checking if you've staked at all. Ties loosen or tighten as stems thicken. Check monthly, adjusting ties to maintain that balance between support and movement. Remove stakes entirely after twelve to eighteen months; by then roots have anchored sufficiently.
Pests and diseases can strike during establishment when plants are stressed and vulnerable. Aphids cluster on soft new growth—blast them off with water or tolerate them unless infestation is severe. Scale insects appear as small brown bumps on stems—scrape them off or treat with horticultural soap. Fungal issues like powdery mildew or rust typically indicate stress or poor air circulation; improve conditions rather than reaching immediately for fungicides.
As autumn arrives and growth slows, reduce watering frequency but don't eliminate it entirely. Evergreens continue losing moisture through their leaves even in winter; they need water when soil isn't frozen. Check containers particularly—these dry out even in winter and can't access groundwater as in-ground plants do.
Winter protection depends on species and location. Box, yew, and holly are fully hardy and need no protection in most British gardens. Bay is tender and should be moved to shelter or wrapped in fleece if temperatures below minus five are forecast. Protect containers more than in-ground plants—roots in pots are exposed to freezing from all sides, while in-ground roots are insulated by surrounding earth. Wrap containers in bubble wrap or hessian, group them together for mutual protection, or move them to more sheltered positions.
The first winter feels long when you're waiting for spring to confirm whether your planting succeeded.
