Lollipops — the accessible classic, and the gentlest entry in the whole range. The 2–3 trim rhythm
Two or three light passes between late spring and early autumn hold any form crisp — and each pass is minutes, not hours, because privet's small leaf forgives every line. There is no wrong cut on this species: whatever you take, it gives back within weeks.
Water the first year
A deep soak once or twice a week through the first spring and summer while the rootball establishes — the first-year guide maps the rhythm week by week. Established privet in open ground largely fends for itself; pots stay on the weekly finger-test, per the container guide.
The winter honesty
Delavay privet is semi-evergreen: in a hard winter it may thin and drop some leaf, and a first-time owner can mistake that for trouble. It isn't — the frame is fine, and the fast dense growth refills the surface each spring, usually thicker than it left off.
Repair & reshaping freedom

What is Delavay privet — and how is it different from hedging privet?
Ligustrum × jonandrum is the small-leaved, slower-stemmed cousin of the rough privet in British hedges — bred and grown for sculpture, not screening. The leaf is a fraction of the size, dark and glossy, and the growth is dense enough to hold a clipped line all season, which is why the Tuscan nurseries use it for their most ambitious topiary rather than their boundaries.
Is Delavay privet evergreen?
Honestly: semi-evergreen. In a mild winter it holds its leaf; in a hard one it can thin and drop some, and that is normal, not a health problem. The frame stays sound and the fast dense growth refills the surface each spring — usually thicker than it left off. Buyers who need guaranteed midwinter density year in, year out should look at yew.
How often does privet topiary need trimming?
