Years of sourcing hand-matched pairs from specialist growers in Holland and Italy teaches you things a plant label never will — which species hold a crisp edge, which sulk in a pot, which specimens at 8 to 15 years old are worth the wait and which are simply old.

Proportion against your architecture
The commonest and costliest mistake is scale. A pair that is one size band too small reads as an afterthought beside a wide Victorian bay; a pair too large swallows a cottage door and blocks the path you actually walk.
Thirty minutes with your measurements settles it before anything is ordered, and the pair that arrives looks like it was specified with the house.

Species that will survive your site
Aspect, exposure, drainage and microclimate decide what thrives. A north-facing shaded entrance, a windy coastal drive and a sheltered courtyard want three different plants, even when they want the same shape.
We talk through Ilex crenata, Taxus baccata, Ligustrum delavayanum and Cupressus sempervirens, and tell you honestly when the one you like is wrong for the spot.

Your measurements against the plant sizes that exist, so the pair frames the entrance rather than crowding it or disappearing beside it.

Which forms suit the setting
Balls, lollipops, spirals, clouds, pom poms, bonsai, pencils or cubes — what each does to a frontage, and which ones your setting will carry.

If it’s an entrance, measure four things
- Doorway height — floor to lintel.
- Doorway width — frame to frame.
- Depth or recess — how far the door sits back from the face of the wall.
- Steps or plinths — the height of anything the plants will stand on or beside.
Those four numbers are what turn a conversation about taste into a decision about size. Rough is fine; to the nearest five centimetres is plenty.
If it’s another space, measure three
- Width available — the span the planting has to hold.
- Height restrictions — a low window, a canopy, a balcony above, an overhanging branch.
- Distance between the plants — how far apart the two will actually stand.
Courtyards, terraces, driveways and garden rooms all work from those three, and the third one decides more than people expect.
Bring the context, and send photos ahead
Worth having to hand: a budget range, a timeline (lead times run 14–21 working days, longer from February to May), whether a designer or landscaper is involved, and any aesthetic references — a saved photograph, a house you drive past, a garden you liked.
Most useful of all: email photographs of the spot to hello@topiarytwins.co.uk before the call, and we’ll have looked at them before you dial in. A wide shot from where a visitor would stand, and one close up of the door or the planting position, is ideal.

Is the consultation really free?
Yes. A 30-minute expert consultation of this kind would typically be valued at £150, and this one is complimentary with no obligation — whether you buy from us, buy later, or buy from somebody else entirely. We don’t take card details to hold a slot, there is no deposit, and nothing is invoiced afterwards. The reason is straightforward: matched pairs are a considered purchase, badly specified plants make unhappy customers, and half an hour of honest advice at the start prevents most of the problems we would otherwise be solving later.
Do I need to know what I want before booking?
Not at all — many of our best consultations start with “I’m not sure what I want”. If you have a doorway, a courtyard or a driveway and a feeling that something is missing, that is enough to work with. We’ll ask about the building, the aspect and how much maintenance you actually want to do, then narrow eight forms and four species down to one or two sensible options. Coming with an open mind often produces a better answer than arriving with a fixed shortlist.
Can I book before I’m ready to buy?
Yes, and plenty of people do — including people whose project is months away. Planning ahead is genuinely useful with plants of this kind: lead times run 14–21 working days, stretching to 21–28 days in the February-to-May peak, and the best specimens in a given size band are allocated early. Knowing in March what you want for September is an advantage, not a waste of our time. There is no pressure to place an order afterwards and no follow-up sequence chasing you.
Can my garden designer or landscaper join the call?
Yes — please invite them. Consultations with the designer or landscaper on the call tend to be the most productive ones, because specification, access, planting conditions and programme can all be settled in one conversation rather than relayed between three people. Simply forward the calendar invitation, or tell us when you book and we’ll include them. If your designer works with us regularly, the Trade Members Programme may also be worth their while.
What if I need to reschedule?
That is fine and it happens constantly. Your confirmation email contains a link to reschedule or cancel at any time, so you can move the call yourself without emailing anyone. If the link gives you trouble, email hello@topiarytwins.co.uk and we’ll move it manually. Consultations run Monday to Sunday, 9am to 7pm, so there is usually an alternative slot within a day or two, including outside normal working hours.
What happens after the consultation?
You receive a summary email with our recommendations written down — the forms and species discussed, the size bands that suit your measurements, and links to the specific products we suggested, so nothing depends on what you managed to scribble during the call. From there it is entirely your move. If you want to go ahead you can order directly from the links; if you want to think about it for six months, the email will still be there when you come back; and if you have one more question, Lifetime Care Support answers by email within 24 hours whether you have bought anything or not.
