How to choose in three questions

Sixty listings is a lot of green. Three questions collapse it to the right pair — and if you'd rather not decide alone, a photo of the position sent to our growers via the free consultation settles it in a day.

1

What's your site? Shade points to yew or Japanese holly; hard wind exposure points to Portuguese laurel, privet or photinia (and away from bay); a sun-baked terrace with sharp drainage is olive country. Light and exposure eliminate more candidates than taste should — answer this one first.

2

How many trims a year will honestly happen? Yew and olive ask one unhurried session; holly, bay, photinia and laurel ask two quick ones; privet asks two or three. None is hard work — but a schedule you won't keep is the wrong plant at any price.

3

What look are you buying? Dark unchanging formality is yew. The box look without box's diseases is Japanese holly. Colour that performs is photinia and the gold-and-blue conifers. Silver Mediterranean light is olive's alone. Scent at the threshold is bay's.

English yew

Best overall — the darkest, densest green; takes shade; lives for generations.

1 trim/yrpairs from £485

Japanese holly

The box lookalike — tightest clipped surface, immune to blight and moth.

2 trims/yrpairs from £455

Delavay privet

Best value and the most shapes — fast, dense and endlessly forgiving.

2–3 trims/yrpairs from £350

Bay laurel

The scented doorstep classic — for sheltered entrances.

1–2 trims/yrpairs from £510

Portuguese laurel

The tough lollipop — wind-proof, cold-proof, unbothered.

2 trims/yrpairs from £430

Photinia Red Robin

The colour-changer — a flame-red flush after every trim.

2 trims/yrpairs from £375

Olive

The only silver — aged trunks, Mediterranean light; sun and drainage required.

1 trim/yrpairs from £875

Conifers

Gold, steel-blue and fresh greens — the colour range and the budget verticals.

1–2 trims/yrpairs from £245

What topiary costs here — and why

Every price on this page is a matched-pair price including VAT. The ladder is set by time — shapes are grown out of years of clipping, not manufactured — and on stemmed forms the honest measure of age is stem girth, stated on every listing, rather than height, which can be forced.

Around the pairs: single shaped plants from £80, clipped border edging from £275 per metre, and specimen-grade trees from £4,000 through the grand topiary tier. The full market logic is in our topiary prices guide.

Why matched pairs

Most positions that want topiary want two — either side of a door, a gate, a path mouth — and two plants bought separately almost never mirror: heads differ, stems lean, habit drifts, and at a threshold the mismatch reads instantly. A true pair can't be assembled at dispatch; it has to be grown: selected together as young plants in Tuscany, raised side by side for years under the same hands, then confirmed side by side on camera at our UK depot before the pallet is built. That photograph is your evidence — and the 7-day Matching Guarantee stands behind it.

Delivery, and what happens after

Kerbside pallet, UK-wide

Your pair travels upright and strapped by specialist haulier, arriving in 14–21 working days. The driver calls about an hour ahead.

6-month Thrive Guarantee

A plant that fails despite reasonable care in its first six months is replaced at 50% of the single-plant price.

Lifetime Care Support

A photo to our team gets grower answers — watering, trimming, winter, anything — for as long as you own the plants.

The establishment year is simpler than most buyers expect — 1–2 deep waterings a week in dry spells, one spring feed, pot feet from October — and it's mapped in the first-year guide. Full terms at delivery & returns.

Buying topiary: quick answers

Are the prices per plant or per pair?

Per matched pair, including VAT — two plants selected and grown together so they genuinely mirror. Where a single suits the position better, single shaped plants start at £80 — the compact range is the natural place to look.

How is topiary delivered?

Kerbside on a pallet by specialist haulier, anywhere in the UK, 14–21 working days from order. The driver telephones about an hour before arrival; delivery is to the kerb or driveway edge, so plan the route to the final position for larger pieces. Full details at delivery & returns.

What if my pair doesn't match when it arrives?

Every pair is photographed side by side at our UK depot before dispatch, and the 7-day Matching Guarantee backs what the photos show — raise any concern within a week and it's resolved within 24 hours — see our guarantees.

What if a plant fails after planting?

The 6-month Thrive Guarantee covers the establishment window: a plant that fails despite reasonable care is replaced at 50% of the single-plant price. After that, Lifetime Care Support keeps a grower one photograph away for as long as you own the plants.

Which topiary is easiest to look after?

Yew and olive — one trim a year each, and drought-tolerant once established. Nothing on this page is genuinely demanding: the heaviest schedule (privet) is two or three short sessions a year, plus first-year watering and one spring feed.

Which topiary suits pots?

Almost everything here — clipped evergreens are gardening's best container plants. Japanese holly, yew, bay, privet and photinia all excel in planters, and olive actively prefers a pot in Britain because it guarantees winter drainage. Use a generous frost-proof pot with real drainage holes and pot feet from October.

Can I plant topiary all year round?

Container-grown stock like ours plants in any season the ground isn't frozen or baked — spring and autumn are gentlest, summer just means keeping up the establishment watering, and winter planting works with drainage in order. The plants arrive established in nursery containers, so there's no rush to pot on.

Why don't you sell box topiary?

Box blight (incurable) and box tree moth (relentless) have made box a liability rather than an asset. Japanese holly delivers the same tight, formal look with total immunity to both — it's the successor the heritage gardens themselves are planting.

Do you help with choosing?

Yes — send a photo of your door, gate or garden through the free consultation and our growers will recommend species, size and placement, usually within a day. It's talked as many buyers down a price tier as up one, which is rather the point.
