The Matching Guarantee
Your two plants will never differ in height by more than 10cm. That is the whole promise, and it is measurable on the doorstep with a tape.
If the pair that arrives isn't matched, email hello@topiarytwins.co.uk within 7 days of delivery, subject line “Matching Guarantee Claim – [order number]”, with a photograph of the two plants together. Claims are resolved within 24 hours, and the resolution is your choice: a replacement pair, or a full refund.

If one of your plants fails to thrive in its first six months, we replace it at 50% of the single-plant cost. Worked example: a £1,000 pair is £500 a plant, so the replacement costs you £250. Eligibility is reviewed within 48 hours of your email — subject line “Thrive Guarantee Claim – [order number]”.
One honest exclusion: if both plants fail, the guarantee doesn't apply. Two identical failures point at the site rather than the stock — drainage, wind, a buried rubble layer — and swapping the plants would only repeat the problem. Either side of the front door
Stand at the gate and look at the frontage as one shape — the spheres should read as a frame, not as ornaments. Scale the diameter of the ball to that frontage: on a standard door a 50–60cm pair sits right, while double doors, a deep porch or a wide Victorian bay will swallow anything smaller than 60–70cm. Then set them clear of the door swing and of the path you actually walk, so nobody edges around them with the shopping. Get those two decisions right and the pair looks like it was specified with the house. The rest of our front door plants are built around exactly this move.
Rhythm along a path or drive
Repetition is the oldest trick in formal design, and nothing repeats as calmly as a sphere. Place your pair facing each other across the route, then repeat further pairs at roughly one sphere-diameter intervals — a 50cm ball, a 50cm gap — so the eye reads a rhythm rather than a queue, and each ball keeps its own outline as it fattens. Two pairs turn a path into an approach; four turn a drive into an arrival. Scale it up with the driveways and pathways collection, or, if you'd rather have a continuous planted line instead of punctuation, run clipped edging along the same route.
Full stops in a border, or potted in a courtyard
Split the pair and you get two full stops. Drop one sphere into billowing planting and everything around it suddenly looks intentional — the ball is the punctuation that lets a loose border read as prose rather than chaos. One per sightline is plenty. Or keep the pair together and lift it into containers: the sphere flatters a pot the way no other form does, which is why it carries a courtyard or patio almost single-handedly, and why it's the safest shape for the wind and weight limits of a balcony or roof terrace. Which size ball pair should I choose?
Ball pairs are sold by sphere diameter, in bands from 30–40cm up to 60–70cm. Match the diameter to the width of the spot the pair has to hold, not to the budget: 30–40cm suits pots, steps and narrow ledges; 40–50cm works mid-border and on a modest frontage; 50–60cm is the doorstep sweet spot for most houses; 60–70cm is for double doors, deep porches and wide drives. Remember that a bigger ball is simply an older tree — more clipping-years in its surface — so the larger bands arrive denser and fuller, and the price moves with the age rather than the postage.
How closely will my two plants match?
Closely, because they were grown as twins rather than picked as a pair on dispatch day. We guarantee a height difference of no more than 10cm between them, and before your pallet is built you receive your pair's quality-control certificate — origins, dimensions and six photographs of your actual two spheres — with 24 hours to review before dispatch. Which species is right for my spot?
Site first, looks second. Deep shade or a north-facing wall points to Prim & Proper, our English yew pair, or Nori & Koa, the Japanese holly — both hold a tight sphere in light the others resent. If you want the box look without box blight or box tree moth, Japanese holly is the immune stand-in and is visually near-identical. Exposed, windy or coastal ground suits Amado & Sera, the Portuguese laurel: glossy, wind- and cold-tolerant, unbothered by exposure. And if you want colour that performs, Roux & Ember, the Red Robin pair, throws a flame-red new flush after every trim.
How far apart should the pair sit?
On a doorstep, one sphere each side of the door, centred on the width available and clear of the door swing — the pair should frame the entrance, never obstruct it. Along a path, drive or border, leave roughly one sphere-diameter of air between pairs: close enough to read as a rhythm, far enough that each ball keeps its own outline as it fattens. How do I keep the spheres perfectly round?
Little and often beats rarely and hard. Cut around the curve in short overlapping passes that follow the sphere, rather than flat across it — a flat pass shears a facet you'll be looking at for a whole season. Step back constantly and walk around the plant as you work; the eye catches a bulge the hand never feels. English yew asks for one trim a year, in late summer. How is a ball pair delivered?
Kerbside, on its own pallet, by a specialist plant haulier, UK-wide. Your two spheres travel upright and are never boxed, the consignment is fully tracked, and the driver phones about an hour ahead so you can be there when he arrives. Allow 14–21 working days from order — the pair is being selected, photographed and documented during that window, not sitting in a warehouse. Delivery is to the kerb, so plan how you'll move two well-grown plants from the kerb to their position before the pallet lands.
