A planting planthat arrives planted.

Most front gardens fail for the same reason: they are bought one plant at a time. A pair here, three perennials there, a shrub because it looked good in the aisle — and nothing agrees with anything. A planting scheme fixes that by deciding everything at once: the structure, the palette, the quantities and the spacing, chosen together before a single plant leaves the nursery. Each bundle in the grid above is one such scheme — a hand-matched topiary pair for the permanent architecture, plus the border designed around it, delivered as one consignment with a plan showing where each plant goes. The card below is what every scheme contains.

The anatomy of a scheme

Every bundle is built the same way: two hand-matched topiary specimens plus a border designed around them. Starter is 14 plants (2 topiary, 12 border) for 5–7m²; Standard is 22 plants (2 and 20) for 7–9m²; Impactful is 36 plants (2 and 34) for 9–12m². The pair is the permanent architecture — evergreen, clipped, identical in January and July. The border is the seasonal argument around it, in drifts and repeats rather than singles. If you already have your structure and only need the ground layer, buy it by the metre from border by the metre instead.

02

Choosing by aspect, then colour

Aspect decides first, palette second — get that order wrong and no amount of design saves it. A shaded or north-facing frontage wants The Woodland Edge, yew ball pair over astilbe, brunnera, tiarella and ferns, from £785. Hot, dry, south-facing gravel wants The Silver & Blue — yew spirals with festuca, perovskia and echinops, exceptionally drought-tolerant, from £1,350. Full sun with an appetite for colour wants The Warm Summer from £545. Only once the aspect is settled does palette matter: The Contemporary Monochrome for black, white and gold restraint, from £1,110; the white schemes for frontages seen mostly after dark.

03

Planting week

The whole scheme arrives on one pallet, kerbside, in 14–21 working days — the driver calls about an hour ahead. Set the matched pair first and stand back at the pavement to check it before anything else goes in; the pair sets the geometry everything else answers to. Then lay the border out still in its pots, following the plan, and adjust until the drifts read from the street. Plant, water in properly, mulch. One afternoon, in most cases. The step-by-step is in our planting guide.

Getting the frontage right.Four rules.

What separates a designed front garden from a collection of plants.

01

Measure before you choose the size

Pace out the area you actually intend to plant — not the whole plot, the planted part. Under 7m² takes Starter; 7–9m² takes Standard; anything over that wants Impactful, or the planting reads thin and the bare soil reads unfinished. Buying a size down to save money is the one economy that always shows.

02

The pair sets the scale

Everything in the scheme is proportioned to the topiary pair, so place it first and judge it from the pavement, not the doorstep. Ball and cube pairs at 50–60cm suit low frontages and cottage doors; 80–100cm clear-stem lollipops and 110–130cm spirals hold their own against tall Georgian and Victorian elevations.

03

Drifts, never dots

The plant counts are deliberate: three, five and seven of a thing, repeated, rather than one of everything. Singles dotted about read as a nursery sample; drifts read as design, and they read from the street, which is the only viewing distance that matters here. The plan supplied with each scheme sets the spacings — follow it. Ongoing upkeep is one trim and one cut-back a year; the detail is in our topiary care guide.

04

Buy for February

Any front garden looks convincing in June. The test is the last week of February, and it is passed by evergreen structure and winter-flowering underplanting — which is exactly why every scheme here is built on a clipped evergreen pair, and why The Autumn & Winter scheme exists at all. Design for the worst month and the rest of the year takes care of itself.

Why A Scheme

The design workis already done.

A garden designer's planting plan for a frontage this size is typically a several-hundred-pound line item before a single plant is bought — and it still leaves you sourcing thirty-six plants from four suppliers, in four different pot sizes, arriving on four different days. These schemes collapse all of that into one decision and one delivery. The palette is resolved, the quantities are resolved, the spacings are resolved, and the structural pair is hand-matched before dispatch, which is the part no plant list can promise you. What you are buying is not a box of plants — it is the judgement about which plants, how many, and where. Schemes on a larger architectural scale live in architectural bundles.

Front garden schemes.Quick answers.

The questions buyers actually ask, answered by the growers.

What's included in an entrance transformation bundle?

One complete front garden planting scheme: a hand-matched pair of topiary specimens for permanent structure, plus the border planting designed around them as a single palette, delivered together with a plan showing where each plant goes. Starter is 14 plants (2 topiary and 12 border), Standard is 22 (2 and 20), Impactful is 36 (2 and 34). Schemes start at £545 including VAT, with free UK delivery.

How do I know which size fits my front garden?

Measure the area you intend to plant, not the whole plot. Starter covers 5–7m², Standard 7–9m² and Impactful 9–12m². If you fall between two, take the larger — underplanting is the most common regret, because bare soil between drifts is what makes a new scheme look unfinished. Awkward or very narrow frontages can be planted at Starter density over a longer, thinner run without any change to the plant list.

Which scheme works for a shaded or north-facing front garden?

The Woodland Edge, from £785 — an English yew ball pair over astilbe, brunnera ‘Jack Frost’, tiarella, male fern and hellebore, all chosen because they perform in partial to full shade rather than merely tolerate it. Yew is the structural plant that holds full density without sun, which is why it anchors that scheme. Avoid the hot-border and drought palettes in shade: they will survive and look sullen.

Do I need a garden designer or a planting plan as well?

No — the plan is the product. Each scheme has already resolved the palette, the plant quantities, the ratio of structure to seasonal interest and the spacings, and arrives with a layout showing where each plant goes. There is no design fee and nothing further to specify. All that's left is to match the scheme to your aspect, pick the size that fits your square metreage, and plant it.

How and when is a scheme delivered?

The whole scheme travels together on one pallet, kerbside, anywhere in mainland UK, in 14–21 working days — and the driver calls about an hour ahead so you're not waiting in. Delivery is free. Kerbside means the pallet is left at the boundary rather than carried through the house, so plan for a pair of hands on the day. Full terms are on our delivery & returns page.

What's guaranteed?

Three things. The topiary pair is photographed side by side at our UK depot before the pallet is built and covered by the 7-day Matching Guarantee. Everything in the scheme is covered by the 6-month Thrive Guarantee — replacement at 50% of the single-plant price if a plant fails despite reasonable care — through the establishment period that matters most. And Lifetime Care Support means a photo gets you grower answers for as long as you own the planting.

The Topiary Twins Difference

Matched beforeyou ever see it.
