SITE REQUIREMENTS:
Light: Full sun essential. All plants in this bundle are prairie/meadow species requiring full sun (6+ hours daily minimum). Topiary (Japanese Holly) tolerates partial shade but border plants need maximum sun for best flowering and structural integrity. This bundle is ideal for hot sunny exposed positions—these species evolved in open prairies and thrive in heat.
Soil: Well-drained, average to poor fertility. Prairie plants evolved in lean soils—avoid over-enriching. Excessive fertility causes floppy growth (particularly grasses and Verbena) requiring staking. Well-drained is essential—avoid waterlogged positions. These plants tolerate drought but not winter wet. Sandy or gravelly soils ideal. Heavy clay acceptable if drainage improved with grit.
Space: Minimum 2m width for Starter, 2.5m for Standard, 3.5m for Impactful. Allow 70-80cm clearance from topiary container edge to door frame (see Placement Guide). Note: prairie plants need space to develop natural flowing habit—don't crowd.
POSITIONING LAYOUT:
Step 1: Position Topiary Cubes
Place containers 120-140cm apart (center to center) depending on entrance width. Geometric cubes provide architectural contrast with flowing prairie plants—position where this juxtaposition will be appreciated. Ensure containers sit level.
Step 2: Plant Molinia (Purple Moor Grass)
Position as backdrop or sides where tall see-through flower stems (to 150cm) create airy clouds without blocking views. Space 80-100cm apart (develops 60-80cm clumps plus tall flowering stems). Provides vertical presence without density—signature prairie grass effect.
Step 3: Plant Pennisetum (Fountain Grass)
Position prominently where burgundy foxtail plumes will be visible and backlit (stunning when sun shines through). Space 70-90cm apart (develops 60-80cm mounding clumps). Creates structural focal points—more architectural than Molinia.
Step 4: Plant Verbena bonariensis
Scatter throughout—see-through habit means it won't block anything behind it. Space 40-50cm apart. Tall wiry stems with purple flowers create purple haze floating above other plants. Allow to self-seed naturally—seedlings create natural drifts enhancing prairie effect.
Step 5: Plant Echinacea 'White Swan'
Position where prominent cones and winter seed heads will be visible. Space 50-60cm apart. Upward-facing flowers provide contrast to nodding grasses. Position where goldfinches feeding on winter seed heads can be observed from house windows.
Step 6: Plant Sedum 'Matrona'
Position in foreground or mid-ground where succulent foliage and flat-topped flowers create bold contrast with fine-textured grasses. Space 50-60cm apart. Provides structural punctuation marks amongst flowing prairie plants.

ESTABLISHMENT CARE (First 6 Months):
Topiary: Water 2-3× weekly during first summer. Japanese Holly is drought-tolerant but benefits from consistent moisture when newly positioned. Feed once in spring. See Complete Care Guide.
Border Plants: Water 2-3× weekly first growing season until established. Despite eventual exceptional drought tolerance, prairie plants need moisture during establishment (roots must develop before tolerating drought). Avoid overwatering—let dry between waterings. Minimal mulch (2-3cm grit/gravel—NOT organic mulch which retains moisture and increases fertility both undesirable for prairie plants). No feeding required—ever. Prairie plants thrive in poor soils.
By 6 months: Starter plants rooted and establishing prairie character developing (30-40% mature, first flowering). Standard plants established with noticeable meadow effect (50-70% mature, good flowering and grass presence). Impactful plants quickly established with genuine prairie abundance (70-90% mature, impressive naturalistic presence from first season).
