How Border by the Metre works

Every Border by the Metre bundle is a self-contained planting unit — one linear metre of designed garden border, anchored by a single topiary specimen and filled with a structured arrangement of companion plants. The unit is designed to repeat. When you order multiple metres, the planting scheme tiles seamlessly — each metre mirrors the last with enough natural variation to avoid rigid repetition. The result is a border that reads as one continuous composition, whether it runs for three metres along a front path or fifteen metres along a rear boundary.

Choose your theme

Each bundle is designed around a distinct colour palette and planting mood. The White Garden uses soft white Hydrangeas, Digitalis, Astrantia, and Geranium for a luminous, evening-lit border. The Formal Edge pairs Salvia Caradonna, Lavender Hidcote, and Stachys byzantina for a structured silver-and-purple scheme. Browse all ten themes to find the mood that suits your garden.

Select your tier

Each theme offers a choice of topiary style — typically a Yew Ball or Bay Lollipop, or an Ilex Ball or Bay Lollipop — so you can match the structural element to your preferred form and species. The companion planting remains the same regardless of topiary choice; only the anchor specimen changes.

Order your length

Measure your border in linear metres and order that quantity. Each unit arrives as a complete metre with its own planting layout guide. For borders over five metres, volume discounts apply automatically at checkout.

Frequently Asked Questions

Title

What exactly is included in one metre of a Border by the Metre bundle?

One metre includes a single topiary specimen — either a ball or lollipop form depending on your selected variant — plus a curated arrangement of companion plants designed to fill one linear metre of garden border. The exact number of companion plants varies by theme (typically 8–12 per metre) and is calibrated to create full, proportionate coverage at the recommended border depth.

Each metre also includes a planting layout guide specific to that theme, showing the precise positioning of every plant within the metre. The guide is designed so that consecutive metres tile naturally — plant each metre according to the diagram and the border reads as one continuous scheme.

How does the topiary choice variant work?

Each themed bundle offers a choice of topiary species and form — for example, The White Garden lets you choose between a Yew Ball or a Bay Lollipop as your anchor specimen. The Formal Edge offers an Ilex Ball or Bay Lollipop.

The companion planting remains identical regardless of which topiary you select — only the structural centrepiece changes. This lets you match the topiary form to your design preference (rounded balls for a softer look, lollipops for height and vertical rhythm) and the species to your site conditions (Yew for shade tolerance, Ilex for compact spaces, Bay for fragrance and evergreen presence).

Select your preferred variant on the product page before adding to cart.

What does "by the metre" actually mean — is it exactly one metre?

Yes — each unit is designed to fill one linear metre of garden border when planted according to the layout guide. The recommended border depth is approximately 80–100cm from back to front, giving each metre roughly 0.8–1.0m² of planting area.

When ordering, measure your border length in whole metres. If your border is 4.5 metres, order 5 units for full coverage, or 4 units and leave a small gap at one end for a feature such as a pot, seat, or path junction.

How many metres do I need for my border?

Measure the length of your border in metres — the run you want the planting scheme to cover. Each unit fills one linear metre.

As a guide: a typical front garden path border runs 3–5 metres. A rear garden boundary border might run 8–15 metres. A long driveway border can be 15–25 metres or more.

For borders under 3 metres, the scheme will still work but with fewer repetitions of the pattern — the topiary punctuation will feel closely spaced. This can be effective for compact, high-impact borders but won't create the extended rhythm that longer runs achieve.

For borders over 10 metres, the visual rhythm becomes genuinely impressive — this is where the by-the-metre format shows its strength, creating consistent, professional-level planting over distance without any design effort on your part.

Can I add more metres later, or does the whole border need to be ordered at once?

You can absolutely extend your border later. Each metre is a self-contained unit that tiles seamlessly, so ordering an additional 3 metres next season will integrate perfectly with the original run — provided you order the same theme and topiary variant.

The only consideration is that plants ordered in different seasons may be at different stages of maturity, so the new metres may look slightly younger than the established section for one growing season. By the second year, the entire border will have knitted together and any difference will be invisible.

We recommend ordering the same theme in a single batch where possible, purely for delivery efficiency and to ensure stock consistency — but phased ordering works perfectly well.

What's the minimum order — can I order just one metre?

Yes — the minimum order is one metre. A single metre makes an effective feature border beside a front door, along a short path, or flanking a garden seat. However, the by-the-metre format is designed to shine at three metres and above, where the repeating rhythm of topiary and companion planting creates genuine visual impact.

What kind of soil and site conditions do these bundles need?

Most themes are designed for average UK garden conditions — reasonably well-drained soil in partial to full sun. Each theme's product page specifies its ideal conditions.

Themes with specific site tolerance include: The Shade Border is designed for north-facing and sheltered positions with limited direct sun. The Coastal Edge uses salt-tolerant, wind-resistant species suited to exposed seaside gardens. The Hot Border performs best in full sun against a south-facing wall or fence.

If you're unsure whether your site conditions suit a particular theme, send us a photo and description (aspect, soil type, exposure) and we'll recommend the best match.

How much maintenance does a Border by the Metre scheme require?

Seasonal maintenance follows a straightforward annual rhythm. In spring: a general tidy-up, removal of dead growth from herbaceous perennials, and a feed with general-purpose fertiliser. Through summer: deadheading flowering varieties to extend bloom, and watering during prolonged dry spells in the first season. In autumn: cutting back herbaceous perennials that die back, and a light mulch to protect roots over winter. The topiary element requires 2–3 light trims per year — identical to any of our individual specimens.

In total, expect 15–20 minutes of maintenance per metre per season. The companion species in all themes are selected for UK hardiness and self-sufficiency — no staking, no specialist feeding, no winter lifting. The border is designed to improve with age, not demand increasing attention.

Because Every Entrance Says Something

Most don’t say enough.

We started TopiaryTwins after noticing something simple: the homes that stayed with you — the townhouses in Chelsea, the cottages in the Cotswolds, the villas of Florence — all had one thing in common: they framed their entrances with intent.

It wasn’t landscaping. It was intention.

A quiet signal of pride. A welcome. A statement. But today? Most homes leave that moment blank. And when the first impression is empty, everything after feels quieter. So we built a brand to change that — to bring sculptural form, balance, and quiet weight to the spaces that greet and define us. Whether it’s a brick doorstep or a long gravel drive, our paired trees do more than decorate.
They complete the home.
