What's Included Per Metre

This border creates naturalistic woodland-inspired planting for shaded positions where most sun-loving borders fail. The composition is designed for partial to full shade—beneath tree canopies, north-facing walls, overshadowed by neighbouring buildings, or woodland garden edges. English Yew provides evergreen structure whilst shade-loving perennials deliver delicate white flowers, silver-frosted foliage, and architectural fern fronds—thriving in conditions that challenge conventional borders. This is sophisticated shade gardening: lush, layered, celebrating plants evolved for forest floor conditions.

WHAT'S INCLUDED:

Anchor Topiary:

  • English Yew Ball (30-40cm diameter)
  • Deep evergreen clipped sphere, exceptionally shade-tolerant (one of few topiary species thriving in shade—most require sun), provides permanent geometric structure creating formal punctuation every metre even in challenging shaded positions, mature specimen 7-10 years old, hardy to -20°C+, containerised and ready to position

Companion Plant 1: Astilbe 'Diamant' (False Spirea)

  • Role: White feathery plumes and glossy foliage
  • Pure white feathery flower plumes June-July rising 50-60cm above foliage, glossy dark green divided foliage creating 40cm mounds, shade-loving (actually prefers partial shade to full sun—leaves scorch in hot sun), moisture-loving but tolerates typical garden conditions once established, provides architectural presence in shade where few plants flower well
  • Quantity: 2 per metre (2L pots)

Companion Plant 2: Brunnera macrophylla 'Jack Frost' (Siberian Bugloss)

  • Role: Silver-frosted foliage and spring flowers
  • Delicate blue forget-me-not flowers April-May, striking silver-frosted heart-shaped leaves with green veining (foliage remains attractive all season after flowering—this is primarily foliage plant), clump-forming 30-40cm height and spread, shade-loving (one of best silver-leaved plants for shade—rare combination), RHS Award of Garden Merit, provides dramatic silver presence in woodland understory
  • Quantity: 2 per metre (2.5L pots)

Companion Plant 3: Dryopteris filix-mas (Male Fern)

  • Role: Architectural fronds and woodland authenticity
  • Classic woodland fern with tall arching fronds 60-90cm, fresh green spring emergence (fiddleheads unfurling—one of spring's great garden moments), semi-evergreen in mild winters (fronds persist through winter then replaced by fresh growth spring), native British fern thriving in shade, provides authentic woodland character and vertical architectural presence
  • Quantity: 2 per metre (3L pots)

Companion Plant 4: Helleborus × hybridus (Lenten Rose)

  • Role: Winter-spring flowering and evergreen structure
  • Bowl-shaped flowers in whites, pinks, purples, plums January-April (winter-blooming when almost nothing else flowers—invaluable in shade), evergreen leathery foliage providing year-round structure, clump-forming 40-50cm height and spread, shade-tolerant (one of few plants flowering well in shade), extremely long-lived (decades with minimal care)
  • Quantity: 1 per metre (3L pot)

HOW THE COMPOSITION WORKS:

Colour palette is deliberately naturalistic and shade-appropriate: deep green Yew, white flowers (Astilbe, Helleborus), blue Brunnera flowers, silver-frosted Brunnera leaves, fresh green fern fronds. This mirrors woodland edge environments where shade limits bright colours—the composition works with shade rather than fighting it. White flowers particularly effective in shade (appear to glow in low light whilst coloured flowers disappear into darkness).

Texture is as important as colour in shaded woodland planting: clipped Yew sphere (smooth, geometric), feathery Astilbe plumes (delicate, airy), bold heart-shaped Brunnera leaves with silver frosting (tactile, sculptural), architectural fern fronds (vertical, arching), substantial Helleborus bowls and leathery leaves (bold, evergreen). Multiple textures create visual interest where bright colour is limited by shade conditions.

Flowering progression unusually extends into winter and early spring (when most borders dormant): Helleborus January-April (winter-blooming—peak interest when gardens empty), Brunnera April-May overlapping Helleborus, Astilbe June-July providing midsummer interest. By high summer when sun-loving borders peak, this woodland composition transitions to foliage-focused display—but the foliage is exceptional: silver-frosted Brunnera leaves, glossy Astilbe foliage, fresh fern fronds, evergreen Helleborus and Yew creating lush green layers through summer-autumn-winter when flowers have finished.

SCALABILITY:

Each metre is a complete woodland unit. When ordering multiple metres:

  • Topiary rhythm: 1 topiary every metre creates geometric punctuation in naturalistic woodland planting—essential discipline preventing composition from appearing random or messy
  • Woodland drift: Shade perennials and ferns flow continuously between topiary units creating seamless woodland understory effect
  • 2-metre order: Intimate shaded entrance or woodland edge
  • 5-metre order: Substantial woodland border with genuine layered effect—ferns, silver foliage, white flowers creating lush understory
  • 10+ metre order: Grand woodland garden effect—dramatic contrast between geometric Yew colonnade and naturalistic woodland perennials creates powerful design statement

The design scales from charming (2-3m) to breathtaking (10m+) whilst maintaining woodland authenticity—the more length, the more the layered woodland effect registers as intentional designed landscape rather than opportunistic shade planting.

Care

ESTABLISHMENT PHASE (First 6-12 Months):

Topiary (English Yew Ball):

  • Watering: 2-3× weekly during summer (even in shade, containers need watering—rain doesn't always reach shaded positions, particularly under trees or against walls). Check moisture regularly. Winter: once every 10-14 days dry weather only.
  • Feeding: Once annually spring (March-April) with slow-release shrub fertiliser, 50g per container.
  • See Complete Care Guide. Yew is exceptionally hardy and thrives in shade—one of few topiary species succeeding in challenging shaded positions.

Companion Plants:

  • Watering: 2-3× weekly first spring/summer. Shade doesn't mean wet—often means dry due to tree roots and rain shadow. Water consistently first season. Check moisture regularly—dry shade is common problem. Astilbe particularly needs moisture—wilting stresses plant and reduces flowering.
  • Mulching: Generous mulching essential in shade (7-10cm leaf mould or bark). Retains moisture, suppresses weeds, adds organic matter as breaks down. Replenish annually spring.
  • No feeding Year 1—planting compost contains nutrients. From Year 2, light spring feed benefits flowering.

ONGOING MAINTENANCE (Year 2 Onwards):

Topiary (English Yew Ball):

  • Water 2-3× weekly summer (check moisture—shade positions often drier than expected), minimal winter
  • Feed once annually spring (slow-release fertiliser, 50g per container)
  • Prune once annually late May-early June (Yew slow-growing, single trim sufficient)
  • See Pruning & Trimming Guide for ball shaping techniques

Astilbe 'Diamant':
Moderate moisture needs—water during dry spells (doesn't tolerate drought as well as some shade perennials—wilts in prolonged dry). Feed spring with balanced fertiliser (supports vigorous flowering). Deadhead spent flower plumes or leave for autumn structure (dried plumes attractive through autumn). Cut back all foliage to ground late autumn or early spring. Divide clumps every 4-5 years spring if becoming congested or flowering declines. Relatively pest/disease-free. Thrives in shade with consistent moisture—one of best flowering perennials for shaded positions.

Brunnera macrophylla 'Jack Frost':
Low maintenance. Tolerates dry shade once established (unusual for silver-leaved plant—most need moisture). No feeding required. Remove any all-green leaves immediately (variegated plants occasionally revert—remove reverted growth promptly to maintain silver foliage). Deadhead spent flowers if desired though foliage is main attraction (flowers brief April-May, silver leaves provide interest March-November). Cut back tatty foliage late autumn or leave semi-evergreen through winter. Divide every 5-7 years spring if spreading too far or to create more plants. Slug-resistant (thick leathery leaves). One of most reliable silver-foliaged shade perennials.

Dryopteris filix-mas (Male Fern):
Extremely low maintenance. Tolerates dry shade once established (native British fern adapted to woodland conditions). No feeding required. Remove old fronds spring as new fiddleheads emerge (old fronds turn brown—cut to ground level making way for fresh spectacular spring growth). Divide every 7-10 years spring only if becoming very congested (rarely necessary—long-lived without disturbance). Virtually pest/disease-free. Semi-deciduous—fronds persist through mild winters providing structure, replaced by fresh growth spring. One of easiest ferns for gardens.

Helleborus × hybridus (Lenten Rose):
Low maintenance. Drought-tolerant shade established (deep roots access moisture). Light spring feed (balanced fertiliser) after flowering. Remove old tatty leaves late winter (January-February) just before flowers emerge—makes flowers more visible, improves appearance. Deadhead spent flowers if preventing self-seeding (though seedlings take 3-4 years to flower so not aggressive—can be pleasant surprise). Never disturb established plants (dislikes root disturbance—extremely long-lived undisturbed, decades in same position). Watch for aphids on flower buds winter (spray off with water if present). Evergreen year-round structure—one of few plants providing both winter flowers and evergreen foliage in shade.

WOODLAND BORDER MAINTENANCE PHILOSOPHY:

This bundle embraces naturalistic woodland approach—not rigid formal maintenance. Key principles:

  • Work with natural growth habits (don't force plants into unnatural shapes or positions)
  • Allow gentle self-seeding where appropriate (Helleborus seedlings can be charming—thin if becoming too abundant)
  • Maintain generous mulch layer (mimics woodland floor leaf litter—essential for moisture retention and soil health)
  • Topiary provides discipline (without Yew rhythm, woodland planting would lack structure—trim maintains this essential contrast)
  • Accept seasonal dormancy (Astilbe dies back winter, Helleborus flowers fade by May—this is natural woodland cycle)

Reward: sophisticated shade planting thriving where sun-loving borders fail, winter-spring interest when most gardens dormant, lush layered woodland effect, relatively low maintenance once established, authentic naturalistic aesthetic.

Planting & Positioning

SITE REQUIREMENTS:

Light: Partial shade to full shade. This bundle is specifically designed for shaded positions (north-facing walls, beneath tree canopies, overshadowed by neighbouring buildings). Topiary (Yew) is one of few species thriving in shade—most topiary requires sun. All companion plants prefer shade to sun—they'll tolerate some morning sun but suffer in hot afternoon sun or full-day sun exposure. Avoid deep dry shade under dense evergreen trees (too challenging even for shade plants).

Soil: Moisture-retentive but well-drained, rich in organic matter. Shade typically means tree root competition and dry soil—amend generously with compost/leaf mould before planting (at least 30% by volume) to improve moisture retention and fertility. Astilbe particularly needs consistent moisture. Avoid waterlogged positions (Helleborus dislikes winter wet—causes crown rot). Neutral to slightly acidic pH ideal (6.0-7.0) but plants tolerate 5.5-7.5 range.

Space: 1m length × 0.6m depth per unit minimum. Can extend depth to 0.8m if desired (allows more generous spacing for ferns). Shaded borders often have softer less formal edges—woodland aesthetic benefits from slightly irregular boundary definition.

POSITIONING WITHIN EACH METRE:

Step 1: Position Topiary
Place Yew ball centrally within 1m width, positioned 20-30cm from back edge of 0.6m depth border. Ball (30-40cm) creates ground-level geometric anchor. Container sits on surface or partially sunken. Topiary provides essential structure in shade—without it, woodland planting would lack discipline and definition.

Step 2: Plant Dryopteris Ferns
Position 2 ferns behind or to sides of topiary where tall fronds (60-90cm) can rise without obscuring topiary ball. Space 60-80cm apart. Fronds arch gracefully outward—needs space to develop natural shuttlecock form. Provides woodland authenticity and vertical architectural height—signature plant of shaded borders.

Step 3: Plant Astilbe
Position 2 Astilbe plants in mid-ground where white feathery plumes will be clearly visible June-July. Space 45-50cm apart. Clumps expand gradually forming substantial mounds—this spacing allows development without overcrowding. Needs positions where soil remains reasonably moist (avoid driest spots if under tree canopy—plant where rain reaches or where you can water).

Step 4: Plant Brunnera 'Jack Frost'
Position 2 Brunnera plants prominently where silver-frosted heart-shaped leaves will be appreciated—this is primarily foliage plant (blue flowers April-May brief, but stunning silver foliage lasts all season). Space 40-50cm apart. Position where low-angled light might catch silver leaves creating luminous effect in shade—near pathway edges particularly effective.

Step 5: Plant Helleborus
Position 1 Helleborus plant where winter-spring flowers (January-April) will be visible from house windows or frequently used pathways (flowers when outdoor garden visits less common—viewing from windows more likely). Space 50-60cm from other plants. Evergreen leathery foliage provides year-round structure—use strategically where permanent green presence needed.

REPEATING FOR MULTIPLE METRES:

Continuous borders (2m+):

  • Topiary positioned at 1m intervals maintaining geometric discipline (critical for preventing woodland planting from appearing random—Yew rhythm provides essential structure)
  • Woodland perennials and ferns positioned more organically—vary placement slightly between metres creating natural drift rather than regimented rows. Example: Metre 1 ferns positioned left side, Metre 2 ferns right side, creating woven naturalistic effect
  • Brunnera and Helleborus spread slowly—don't expect rapid coverage but plants long-lived and gradually expand
  • Astilbe clumps slowly increase in size—can divide after 4-5 years to spread through border if desired

Woodland curves or irregular edges:

  • Woodland style particularly suits informal edges and curves—don't force rigid straight lines
  • Let plants blend organically across notional metre boundaries
  • Ferns especially effective in irregular groups (cluster 2-3 ferns together rather than distributing evenly)
