What's Included Per Metre

This border creates timeless formal elegance through architectural clipped topiary combined with restrained silver and purple perennials. The composition is designed for sunny positions where crisp structure and traditional formality are desired—suitable for flanking pathways, defining property boundaries, or creating formal garden rooms. Deep green topiary provides permanent architecture, whilst silver foliage (Stachys) and purple flowers (Lavender, Salvia, Allium) deliver classic English garden color without compromising formal restraint.

WHAT'S INCLUDED:

Anchor Topiary (choose one option):

Option 1: Ilex Crenata Ball (30-40cm)

  • Evergreen clipped sphere with small dark green leaves resembling Box but more cold-hardy and blight-resistant
  • Provides low-level formal punctuation every metre creating rhythmic formal edge
  • Excellent alternative to Box—no blight issues, evergreen year-round, responds well to clipping

Option 2: Bay Lollipop (40-60cm stem, 8-10cm girth)

  • Elevated ball canopy on clear stem providing eye-level formal presence
  • Aromatic dark green evergreen foliage, periodic trimming stimulates fresh growth
  • Creates more dramatic formal statement than ground-level ball—suitable where height desired

Both options work beautifully—choose based on desired height and formality level. Price adjusts per your selection.

Companion Plant 1: Lavandula angustifolia 'Hidcote'

  • Role: Purple flowering ribbon and fragrance
  • Deep purple-blue flowers June-August, intensely aromatic grey-green foliage, compact habit 40-50cm mature height, classic English Lavender prized for essential oil production, drought-tolerant once established
  • Quantity: 3 per metre (3L pots)

Companion Plant 2: Stachys byzantina 'Silver Carpet'

  • Role: Silver ground cover and textural contrast
  • Soft silver-grey felted evergreen foliage, non-flowering cultivar (selected for foliage only—no flower spikes to spoil formal effect), low spreading carpet 15-20cm height, provides year-round silver brightness particularly effective against dark topiary
  • Quantity: 2 per metre (2L pots)

Companion Plant 3: Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna'

  • Role: Dark vertical accents and extended flowering
  • Deep violet-purple flower spikes June-September on near-black stems, long flowering season (3+ months), upright habit 50-60cm, provides vertical punctuation marks, attracts pollinators, excellent structure even after flowering
  • Quantity: 2 per metre (2L pots)

Companion Plant 4: Allium 'Globemaster'

  • Role: Seasonal drama and architectural accent
  • Large violet-purple spherical flower heads May-June on tall stems 80-100cm (dramatic 15-20cm diameter globes), architectural seed heads persist through summer, bulb naturalises and multiplies, provides spectacular late-spring focal point without disturbing formal restraint
  • Quantity: 1 per metre (5L pot—mature bulb)

HOW THE COMPOSITION WORKS:

Colour palette is deliberately restrained and formal: deep evergreen topiary, silver-grey Stachys foliage, purple tones (Lavender, Salvia, Allium). This creates sophisticated unity—the classic combination of dark green, silver, and purple that's defined English formal gardens for centuries. No bright colours interrupt—just variations on this elegant theme.

Texture provides interest within restraint: clipped topiary spheres or balls (smooth, geometric), soft felted Stachys leaves (tactile, low horizontal), fine Lavender foliage (aromatic, needle-like), upright Salvia spires (vertical, stiff), and dramatic Allium globes (spherical, architectural). Multiple textures create visual complexity whilst colour restraint maintains formal dignity.

Seasonal progression ensures continuous interest: late spring Allium globes emerge (May-June, spectacular drama), early summer Lavender flowers (June-August, peak fragrance and purple haze), overlapping Salvia (June-September, long-season vertical accents), with evergreen topiary and Stachys providing year-round structure. By autumn, Salvia seed heads and dried Allium stems persist creating winter interest alongside permanent evergreen framework.

SCALABILITY:

Each metre is a complete formal unit. When ordering multiple metres:

  • Topiary rhythm: 1 topiary every metre creates formal colonnade effect—particularly effective at 5m+ where rhythm becomes architecturally significant
  • Companion flow: Purple and silver plants drift continuously between topiary creating cohesive understory
  • 2-metre order: Intimate formal entrance or short pathway edge
  • 5-metre order: Substantial formal border defining space with authority
  • 10+ metre order: Grand formal avenue effect—dramatic repetition creates powerful formal statement

The design scales from subtle (2-3m) to commanding (10m+) without losing proportion—formal restraint ensures elegance at any scale.

Care

ESTABLISHMENT PHASE (First 6-12 Months):

Topiary (Ilex Crenata or Bay):

  • Watering: 2-3× weekly during summer (containers dry faster than in-ground). Ilex drought-tolerant but appreciates consistent moisture first season. Bay more vigorous—needs regular water. Check moisture before watering. Winter: once every 10-14 days dry weather only.
  • Feeding: Once annually spring (March-April) with slow-release shrub fertilizer, 50g per container.
  • See Complete Care Guide for species-specific topiary maintenance. Ilex is exceptional Box alternative (no blight). Bay aromatic and fast-growing.

Companion Plants:

  • Watering: 2-3× weekly first spring/summer. Lavender and Stachys require excellent drainage—let dry between waterings (these are Mediterranean plants, dislike wet). Salvia moderate moisture. Allium minimal water after planting (bulb dormant summer).
  • Mulching: Use grit/gravel mulch (2-3cm) around Lavender and Stachys—NOT organic mulch which retains moisture. Salvia and Allium tolerate organic mulch.
  • No feeding Year 1—these plants thrive in poor-moderate fertility.

ONGOING MAINTENANCE (Year 2 Onwards):

Topiary:

  • Ilex Crenata Ball: Water 2-3× weekly summer, minimal winter. Feed once annually spring. Prune 1-2× annually (May-June and optionally August)—slow-growing, less frequent than Box. See Pruning & Trimming Guide.
  • Bay Lollipop: Water 2-3× weekly summer, minimal winter. Feed once annually spring. Prune 2-3× annually (May-August)—fast-growing, frequent trimming maintains tight ball. See Pruning & Trimming Guide.

Lavandula angustifolia 'Hidcote':
Drought-tolerant established—water only extended dry spells (3+ weeks no rain). Minimal feeding (light balanced fertilizer spring optional—excess fertility reduces flowering). Trim after flowering (August) removing spent stems plus 2-3cm foliage. Light spring tidy-up (April) removing winter damage. Avoid hard pruning into old woody stems (won't regenerate). Lifespan 8-12 years before replacement. Provides continuous aromatic foliage and summer purple flowers with minimal care.

Stachys byzantina 'Silver Carpet':
Extremely low maintenance. Drought-tolerant—avoid overwatering (causes rot). No feeding required. Remove tatty leaves spring/autumn. This cultivar non-flowering (no deadheading needed). Tidy edges if spreading beyond desired area. Divide every 3-4 years spring if becoming too vigorous or rejuvenate. Evergreen year-round silver—one of easiest ground covers.

Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna':
Drought-tolerant established. Light spring feed (balanced fertilizer) optional. Cut back after first flowering (July) to 10-15cm—encourages second flush September. Tidy late autumn (November) or early spring (March)—cut all growth to ground. Very reliable, long-flowering (June-September), minimal care. Near-black stems provide structure even when not flowering.

Allium 'Globemaster':
Plant-and-forget bulb. Drought-tolerant (bulb dormant summer June-September—no water needed). No feeding required. Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering (June-July)—don't cut until completely yellow/brown (feeds bulb for next year). Bulb multiplies slowly forming clump over years. Lift and divide every 5-7 years spring only if overcrowded. Provides spectacular late-spring drama (May-June) with zero maintenance rest of year.

FORMAL BORDER MAINTENANCE PHILOSOPHY:

This bundle requires regular attention to maintain formal effect—not a naturalistic "leave it wild" border. Key tasks:

  • Topiary trimming essential (frequency depends on species—Ilex 1-2×/year, Bay 2-3×/year)
  • Lavender trimming post-flowering maintains compact habit (skip this and plants become leggy/woody)
  • Deadheading Salvia extends flowering and prevents self-seeding (which would spoil formal restraint)
  • Edge definition critical—keep Stachys from creeping beyond boundary, maintain crisp border edge

Reward for this attention: year-round formal elegance, classic English garden aesthetic, timeless appeal that ages gracefully.

Planting & Positioning

SITE REQUIREMENTS:

Light: Full sun to partial shade. Topiary (Ilex or Bay) tolerates partial shade. Lavender and Salvia require full sun (6+ hours daily) for best flowering and compact growth—avoid deep shade. Allium tolerates sun to light shade. Stachys thrives full sun but tolerates partial shade. Ideal position receives sun most of day.

Soil: Well-drained essential, moderate fertility. Lavender particularly requires excellent drainage—avoid waterlogged positions or heavy clay without amendment. Salvia tolerates clay if drainage adequate. Stachys and Allium adaptable. Amend heavy soils with grit (30% by volume minimum) before planting. These plants prefer slightly alkaline to neutral pH (6.5-7.5) but tolerate 6.0-8.0 range.

Space: 1m length × 0.6m depth per unit minimum. Can extend depth to 0.8m if desired (allows more generous spacing). Border should have stable edge (paving, gravel, mown grass)—formal effect requires crisp boundary definition.

POSITIONING WITHIN EACH METRE:

Step 1: Position Topiary
Place topiary centrally within 1m width, positioned 20-30cm from back edge of 0.6m depth border. If using Ilex Ball (30-40cm), sits lower creating ground-level formal punctuation. If using Bay Lollipop (40-60cm stem), elevated canopy floats above companions creating more dramatic presence. Container sits on surface or sunken slightly for stability.

Step 2: Plant Lavender
Position 3 Lavender plants in front third of border, 25-35cm from front edge. Space 35-40cm apart (3 plants will span approximately 80cm of the 1m width creating continuous purple ribbon when flowering). Plant in slightly raised mound or on level ground with excellent drainage—critical for Lavender success.

Step 3: Plant Stachys (Silver Carpet)
Position 2 Stachys plants at front edge creating silver ground-level trim. Space 40-50cm apart (will spread to create continuous silver carpet within season). Position right at front boundary or slightly behind (10-15cm) if you want crisp edge. Silver foliage particularly effective against dark paving or gravel.

Step 4: Plant Salvia (Dark Purple Spikes)
Position 2 Salvia plants in mid-ground between Lavender and topiary, 30-40cm from topiary base. Space 45-50cm apart. Upright habit (50-60cm) creates vertical accents rising between Lavender (40-50cm) and topiary (30-40cm ball or 100cm lollipop total height). Near-black stems particularly effective against silver Stachys and purple Lavender.

Step 5: Plant Allium Bulb
Position 1 Allium bulb to one side of topiary (left or right), 25-30cm from topiary base, in mid-ground. Plant bulb 15-20cm deep autumn-winter for late spring flowering. Tall stem (80-100cm) with large globe will rise dramatically creating seasonal focal point without disturbing year-round formal structure.

REPEATING FOR MULTIPLE METRES:

Continuous borders (2m+):

  • Topiary positioned at precise 1m intervals (e.g., 5m border = topiary at 0.5m, 1.5m, 2.5m, 3.5m, 4.5m marks measuring from start)—regularity is key to formal effect
  • Lavender ribbon flows continuously—plant across metre boundaries creating unbroken purple front edge when flowering
  • Stachys spreads naturally between units creating continuous silver trim within first season
  • Salvia positioned consistently in each metre maintaining vertical rhythm
  • Allium positioned alternating sides (Metre 1: right side of topiary, Metre 2: left side, Metre 3: right, etc.) creates balanced distribution rather than regimented line

Formal corners:

  • Measure each straight section separately, order metres accordingly
  • At corner, final topiary of first section and first topiary of second section should be ~1m apart maintaining rhythm (don't crowd corner)
