What's Included Per Metre

This border creates four-season planting with exceptional winter interest—celebrating the cold months when most gardens are dormant or bare. The composition is designed for positions viewed during winter months (approaching entrance November-March, windows overlooking garden during cold season, pathways used daily regardless of weather). Variegated Holly lollipops provide evergreen structure with cream-edged foliage and potential red berries whilst winter-specialist perennials deliver flowers, fragrance, and golden foliage when gardens are typically colourless—this is winter gardening: deliberately inverting seasonal priorities to create beauty when it's most rare and most valued.

WHAT'S INCLUDED:

Anchor Topiary:

  • Variegated Holly Lollipop (Ilex aquifolium variegated - 40-60cm stem, 8-10cm girth)
  • Elevated ball canopy on clear stem with cream-edged spiny evergreen leaves creating year-round variegated presence, potential for red berries autumn-winter if pollinated (Holly is dioecious—female plants produce berries if male pollinator nearby, berries persist November-February providing wildlife food and ornamental value), exceptionally hardy (-20°C+), provides architectural punctuation with winter colour interest from variegated foliage and potential berries

Companion Plant 1: Helleborus × hybridus (Lenten Rose)

  • Role: Winter-spring flowering and evergreen structure
  • Bowl-shaped flowers in whites, pinks, purples, plums January-April (winter-blooming when almost nothing else flowers—invaluable cold-season colour), evergreen leathery foliage providing year-round structure, clump-forming 40-50cm height and spread, shade-tolerant (one of few plants flowering well in shade), extremely long-lived (decades with minimal care), provides peak winter flower interest when gardens empty
  • Quantity: 2 per metre (2L pots)

Companion Plant 2: Carex oshimensis 'Evergold' (Japanese Sedge)

  • Role: Year-round golden foliage accent
  • Evergreen arching foliage with central golden-yellow stripe edged in dark green creating continuous golden presence, forms cascading mounds 20-30cm height spreading 30-40cm, provides year-round golden colour particularly valuable November-March when most foliage brown or dormant, fine texture contrasts with bold evergreen leaves, tolerates sun to shade
  • Quantity: 3 per metre (3L pots)

Companion Plant 3: Cyclamen coum (Hardy Cyclamen)

  • Role: Winter ground-level flowers and marbled foliage
  • Delicate pink-magenta flowers on wiry stems December-March (flowers through deepest winter—rare and precious trait), heart-shaped silver-marbled leaves September-May (foliage emerges autumn, flowers winter, foliage persists spring then dies back summer dormancy), low ground cover 8-12cm height, naturalises via seed creating expanding colonies, provides jewel-like winter ground-level colour carpeting pathway edges
  • Quantity: 2 per metre (1L pots)

Companion Plant 4: Sarcococca confusa (Sweet Box)

  • Role: Winter fragrance and evergreen structure
  • Intensely fragrant small white flowers January-March (one of most fragrant winter-flowering shrubs—scent carries across garden on cold air, particularly noticeable because fragrance rare in winter), glossy dark green evergreen foliage, compact rounded habit 80-100cm height and spread, black berries follow flowers, shade-tolerant (actually prefers partial shade), provides exceptional winter fragrance experience—scent appreciated during cold-weather approach to entrance
  • Quantity: 1 per metre (2L pot)

HOW THE COMPOSITION WORKS:

This border deliberately inverts seasonal priorities—peak season is November-March rather than May-August. Colour palette during winter interest period: variegated Holly cream-edged foliage year-round (plus potential red berries November-February), white Helleborus flowers January-April, white Sarcococca flowers January-March, pink-magenta Cyclamen flowers December-March, golden Carex foliage year-round (particularly valuable November-March when other foliage dormant). This provides genuine colour during coldest darkest months when conventional borders offer nothing.

Winter progression ensures continuous interest November-March: early winter Holly berries ripen (November-December if present—provides red winter colour), midwinter Cyclamen flowers emerge (December-February—peak depth-of-winter colour), late winter Sarcococca fragrant flowers open (January-March—most intense fragrance February when air still and cold concentrates scent), late winter-spring Helleborus flowers open (January-April overlapping Sarcococca and extending into early spring), with evergreen structure (Holly, Helleborus, Carex, Sarcococca) and Cyclamen marbled foliage providing continuous presence throughout.

Fragrance is key winter feature: Sarcococca's sweet honey scent (January-March—one of most fragrant winter plants, scent carries remarkably well in cold still air), Helleborus' subtle scent (varies by hybrid—some have honey fragrance, others barely scented). Winter fragrance particularly valued because rare, noticeable in cold air (scent molecules don't dissipate as quickly in cold), and appreciated during approach to entrance (cold weather means you're moving through border quickly but scent lingers).

Evergreen dominance ensures year-round structure: variegated Holly lollipop canopy, glossy Sarcococca foliage, Helleborus leathery leaves, golden Carex grass, even when Cyclamen dormant (June-September) border remains fully furnished with evergreen presence. By summer when deciduous plants dormant, this border transitions to foliage-focused display—but its purpose is fulfilled by then, having provided months of winter beauty when most needed.

SCALABILITY:

Each metre is a complete winter unit. When ordering multiple metres:

  • Topiary rhythm: 1 variegated Holly lollipop every metre creates year-round variegated architectural colonnade (cream-edged foliage visible year-round, potential red berries November-February create winter colour rhythm)
  • Winter flower drift: Helleborus and Cyclamen flow continuously creating winter-flowering carpet—pink Cyclamen at ground level (December-March), Helleborus mid-height (January-April)
  • Golden accent: Carex positioned throughout creating continuous golden foliage presence particularly effective November-March against winter browns
  • 2-metre order: Intimate winter entrance providing cold-season interest
  • 5-metre order: Substantial winter border with genuine off-season beauty—multiple fragrance sources (Sarcococca), continuous winter flowers
  • 10+ metre order: Grand winter colonnade effect—dramatic variegated Holly rhythm with abundant winter flowers and fragrance creates memorable cold-season experience

The design scales from charming (2-3m) to breathtaking (10m+) whilst maintaining winter focus—the more length, the more the intentional winter beauty registers as sophisticated seasonal design celebrating cold months.

Care

ESTABLISHMENT PHASE (First 6-12 Months):

Topiary (Variegated Holly Lollipop):

  • Watering: 2-3× weekly during summer (even drought-tolerant Holly benefits from consistent moisture when establishing). Check moisture regularly. Winter: once every 10-14 days dry weather only.
  • Feeding: Once annually spring (March-April) with slow-release shrub fertiliser, 50g per container.
  • See Complete Care Guide. Holly is exceptionally hardy and low-maintenance. Variegated forms slightly slower-growing than green forms.

Companion Plants:

  • Watering: 2-3× weekly first spring/summer. Winter-interest plants still need moisture during establishment. Check moisture regularly—shade often means dry due to rain shadow from buildings or tree canopies.
  • Mulching: Generous mulching essential (7-10cm leaf mould or bark). Retains moisture, suppresses weeds, adds organic matter as breaks down. Replenish annually spring.
  • No feeding Year 1—planting compost contains nutrients.

ONGOING MAINTENANCE (Year 2 Onwards):

Topiary (Variegated Holly Lollipop):

  • Water 2-3× weekly summer, minimal winter
  • Feed once annually spring (slow-release fertiliser, 50g per container)
  • Prune once annually late spring (May-June) after berry potential assessed—if berries present autumn-winter, prune lightly to preserve some for following year; if no berries, prune more freely
  • See Pruning & Trimming Guide. Holly slower-growing than many topiary species—minimal pruning needed
  • Berry production: Female Holly produces berries only if male pollinator nearby (within 30m typically sufficient). Berries ripen autumn (green → yellow → red October-November) persisting through winter. Birds eat berries late winter (February-March) providing wildlife value.

Helleborus × hybridus (Lenten Rose):
Low maintenance. Drought-tolerant shade established (deep roots access moisture). Light spring feed (balanced fertiliser) after flowering. Remove old tatty leaves late winter (January-February) just before flowers emerge—makes flowers more visible, improves appearance, removes potential disease harbour. Deadhead spent flowers if preventing self-seeding (though seedlings take 3-4 years to flower so not aggressive—can be pleasant surprise). Never disturb established plants (dislikes root disturbance—extremely long-lived undisturbed, decades in same position). Watch for aphids on flower buds winter (spray off with water if present). Evergreen year-round structure. Provides invaluable winter-spring flowers January-April when gardens empty.

Carex oshimensis 'Evergold':
Very low maintenance. Moderate drought tolerance established. No feeding required. Comb out dead foliage spring with fingers or rake—minimal grooming needed. Divide every 4-5 years spring if centres dying out or clumps becoming too large. Virtually pest/disease-free. Evergreen provides continuous golden colour year-round—particularly valuable November-March when most foliage brown. One of best year-round golden-variegated grasses for borders.

Cyclamen coum (Hardy Cyclamen):
Very low maintenance. Drought-tolerant during summer dormancy (corms dormant June-September—no water needed, don't assume dead). Water moderately autumn-spring when in growth (September-May foliage present). No feeding required. Allow to self-seed naturally—seedlings create expanding colonies over years (takes 2-3 years for seedlings to flower but creates naturalised effect worth waiting for). Never disturb established corms (dislikes disturbance—leave undisturbed). Summer dormant period (June-September, foliage dies back completely)—mark positions so don't accidentally disturb when dormant. Virtually pest/disease-free. Winter-flowering provides rare jewel-like ground-level colour December-March—one of most precious winter plants.

Sarcococca confusa (Sweet Box):
Very low maintenance. Tolerates dry shade once established. No feeding required. Minimal pruning needed—naturally forms neat rounded shape. Remove any dead wood spring if present. Divide clumps every 7-10 years spring only if becoming too large or to create more plants (rarely necessary—slow-growing, long-lived). Virtually pest/disease-free. Evergreen provides year-round structure. Fragrance is self-renewing—no deadheading or special care needed for flowering. Intensely fragrant January-March (one of most valuable winter-fragrant plants—scent carries remarkably well in cold still air).

WINTER BORDER MAINTENANCE PHILOSOPHY:

This bundle prioritises winter beauty and year-round evergreen structure—maintenance supports cold-season interest. Key principles:

  • Minimal winter disturbance (plants flowering or preparing to flower November-March—avoid disturbing)
  • Remove Helleborus tatty leaves January (makes winter flowers more visible—key maintenance task)
  • Allow Cyclamen self-seeding (creates expanding winter-flowering carpet over years—worth encouraging)
  • Don't cut back evergreen foliage autumn (Holly, Sarcococca, Helleborus, Carex all provide winter structure—leave standing)
  • Position fragrant Sarcococca where scent will be encountered regularly (fragrance is key winter feature—strategic positioning essential)

Reward: genuine winter beauty November-March when most gardens dormant, winter fragrance (Sarcococca sweet scent January-March rare and precious), year-round evergreen structure (never looks bare or unfinished), low maintenance once established, celebrates cold months when beauty is most valued and most rare.

Planting & Positioning

SITE REQUIREMENTS:

Light: Full sun to partial shade. Topiary (variegated Holly) tolerates full sun to partial shade (variegation more intense in good light but plant adaptable). Sarcococca actually prefers partial shade (tolerates full shade—rare for flowering plant). Helleborus prefers partial shade (tolerates sun but may scorch in hot afternoon sun). Carex tolerates sun to shade. Cyclamen prefers partial shade (suited to woodland edges). This bundle is particularly suitable for positions receiving morning sun and afternoon shade—common for many entrances and ideal for winter interest (morning winter sun valuable, afternoon shade prevents winter scorch on evergreens).

Soil: Well-drained, moisture-retentive, rich in organic matter. Holly adapts to wide range. Sarcococca, Helleborus, and Cyclamen all prefer humus-rich soil. Carex adaptable. Amend generously with compost/leaf mould before planting (at least 30% by volume). Avoid waterlogged positions particularly for Cyclamen (corms rot in winter wet—ensure excellent drainage). Neutral to slightly acidic soil ideal (pH 6.0-7.0) but plants tolerate 5.5-7.5 range.

Space: 1m length × 0.6m depth per unit minimum. Winter borders benefit from viewing proximity—plant where you'll pass regularly during cold months (daily entrance approach, windows with views, pathways used regardless of weather).

POSITIONING WITHIN EACH METRE:

Step 1: Position Topiary Lollipop
Place variegated Holly lollipop centrally within 1m width, positioned 20-25cm from back edge. Elevated canopy (total height approximately 100-120cm including stem and ball) provides eye-level variegated presence year-round. Container sits on surface or partially sunken. Variegated foliage visible year-round providing cream-edged architectural interest particularly effective against winter skies or snow.

Step 2: Plant Sarcococca (Sweet Box)
Position 1 Sarcococca plant where winter fragrance will be appreciated—near pathway, close to door, where you'll pass regularly January-March. Space 40-50cm from topiary base or other plants. Prefers partial shade—ideal beneath Holly lollipop canopy or in corners receiving less sun. Position where fragrance drifts towards entrance doors or sitting areas (scent carries well in cold still air—consider positioning relative to prevailing winter breeze).

Step 3: Plant Helleborus
Position 2 Helleborus plants where winter-spring flowers will be visible from house windows or frequently used pathways (flowers January-April when garden viewing from windows more common than outdoor visits). Space 50-60cm apart. Evergreen foliage provides year-round structure—position prominently where this will be appreciated. Winter flowers particularly effective viewed from inside looking out (warm interior, cold garden outside—flowers remind you spring approaches).

Step 4: Plant Carex 'Evergold'
Position 3 Carex plants scattered throughout for continuous golden accent. Space 35-40cm apart. Evergreen golden foliage particularly valuable November-March when most foliage brown or dormant—provides brightness during darkest months. Use in clusters or distribute evenly depending on desired effect. Golden variegation catches winter light beautifully.

Step 5: Plant Cyclamen coum
Position 2 Cyclamen plants at front edge or beneath shrubs creating winter-flowering ground cover. Space 30-40cm apart. Naturalises via self-seeding creating expanding colonies over years—plant where natural spreading desired. Flowers emerge December-March providing ground-level jewel-like colour during coldest months. Silver-marbled foliage attractive September-May (foliage present autumn-winter-spring, then dies back summer—don't assume dead when dormant June-September).

REPEATING FOR MULTIPLE METRES:

Continuous borders (2m+):

  • Topiary positioned at precise 1m intervals creating variegated architectural rhythm (cream-edged foliage creates year-round visual interest, potential berries November-February add winter colour)
  • Sarcococca positioned where fragrance will be appreciated—near pathways, close to doors (consider one Sarcococca per metre or every other metre depending on desired fragrance intensity)
  • Helleborus positioned prominently for winter flower viewing—where visible from windows or pathways used during cold months
  • Carex positioned to create continuous golden foliage presence—particularly effective when snow-covered or frost-rimmed
  • Cyclamen spreads naturally between units via self-seeding—allow gentle naturalising creating expanding winter-flowering carpet over years

Winter viewing positions:

  • Consider where border viewed during cold months (windows, daily entrance approach, pathways used regardless of weather)
  • Position fragrant Sarcococca where scent will be encountered (pathways, entrance approach)
  • Consider winter sun angle (low winter sun backlights evergreen foliage and flowers beautifully)
