SITE REQUIREMENTS:
Light: Full sun to partial shade. Topiary (Ilex) tolerates partial shade. Geranium 'Rozanne' actually prefers some afternoon shade in hot regions (prevents flower bleaching). Alchemilla tolerates sun to partial shade. Nepeta prefers full sun but tolerates light shade. Penstemon requires full sun for best flowering. Ideal position receives sun most of day with some afternoon shade protection—common for many cottage gardens.
Soil: Well-drained, moderate to rich fertility. Cottage perennials appreciate richer soil than formal borders—amend with compost before planting (20-30% by volume). Geranium and Alchemilla tolerate clay if drainage adequate. Nepeta needs good drainage (avoid waterlogged positions). Penstemon requires excellent drainage particularly winter (wet kills more Penstemon than cold). Neutral to slightly acidic pH ideal (6.5-7.0) but plants tolerate 6.0-7.5 range.
Space: 1m length × 0.6m depth per unit minimum. Can extend depth to 0.8m if desired (allows more generous billowing—these plants want to sprawl). Border benefits from slightly softer edge definition than formal borders—cottage plants look best spilling slightly over boundaries.
POSITIONING WITHIN EACH METRE:
Step 1: Position Topiary
Place topiary centrally within 1m width, positioned 20-30cm from back edge of 0.6m depth border. Ilex Ball (30-40cm) creates ground-level geometric anchor. Container sits on surface or partially sunken. Topiary provides essential discipline—without it, cottage perennials would appear unstructured.
Step 2: Plant Geranium 'Rozanne'
Position 3 Geranium plants throughout front and mid-ground—don't regiment in straight line. Space 45-55cm apart. Plant 1 near front edge (left or right), 1 in mid-ground opposite side, 1 near topiary base. Spreads vigorously creating weed-suppressing carpet—deliberately irregular positioning creates natural cottage effect as plants fill in.
Step 3: Plant Alchemilla (Lady's Mantle)
Position 3 Alchemilla plants in clusters—2 together in one area (front or mid-ground), 1 separate. Space 35-40cm apart within cluster. Creates frothy lime-green clouds rather than even distribution. Self-seeds gently—allow some natural spreading for authentic cottage effect (thin seedlings if becoming too abundant).
Step 4: Plant Nepeta (Catmint)
Position 2 Nepeta plants at front edge or slightly behind (15-20cm from edge). Space 50-60cm apart. Billowing habit (spreads 45-75cm) creates soft hazy edge—particularly effective where border meets paving or gravel. Allow to mound over edge slightly for authentic cottage garden spilling effect.
Step 5: Plant Penstemon 'Garnet'
Position 1 Penstemon plant in mid-ground between topiary and front plants. Upright habit (50-70cm) provides vertical accent amongst mounding plants. Deep wine-red flowers provide essential colour depth—position where this will be visible and appreciated.
REPEATING FOR MULTIPLE METRES:
Continuous borders (2m+):
- Topiary positioned at precise 1m intervals maintaining geometric discipline (critical for preventing chaos)
- Perennials positioned more organically—vary placement slightly between metres creating natural drift rather than regimented repetition. Example: Metre 1 might have Geranium clustered left, Metre 2 clustered right, creating woven effect
- Geranium and Nepeta spread naturally between units creating continuous carpet within first season—embrace this, don't fight it
- Alchemilla self-seeds across units—allow gentle spreading (creates authentic cottage randomness)
- Penstemon positioned consistently but not identical—alternating placement (left/right of topiary) creates rhythm without rigidity
Cottage corners or curves:
- Measure total curved length, order that many metres
- Cottage style particularly suits curves—billowing plants follow curves naturally
- Don't force rigid metre boundaries—let plants blend organically across notional dividing lines
