Details

This bundle creates a cool sophisticated entrance where silver foliage and blue flowers dominate—a restrained palette that reads as calm, contemporary, and deliberately composed. English Yew spirals provide dark evergreen architecture whilst surrounding plants deliver silver-grey foliage (Agapanthus, Stachys) and blue flowers ranging from pale sky-blue (Festuca) through mid-blue (Perovskia, Echinops) to deep violet-blue (Agapanthus). This is modern elegance: structured, cool-toned, with exceptional drought tolerance once established.

WHAT'S INCLUDED:

Topiary Anchor:

  • 2× English Yew Spiral Topiary Trees (Taxus baccata)
  • Height: 110-130cm (identical across all variants—topiary size doesn't vary)
  • Helical form with 2-3 complete rotations, 8-12cm groove width, mature specimens 7-10 years old
  • Deep evergreen foliage year-round, exceptionally hardy (-20°C+), containerized and ready to position

Border Plants (quantity and size vary by variant):

Agapanthus 'Northern Star' (African Lily)

  • Role: Architectural structure and dramatic blue flowers
  • Deep violet-blue flower globes on tall stems 80-100cm July-August, strap-like grey-green foliage clumps 40-50cm height, deciduous (foliage dies back winter), one of hardiest Agapanthus cultivars (H4 hardiness—survives most UK winters with light mulch protection).
  • Quantity: 2 plants (Starter - 1L), 3 plants (Standard - 2L), 5 plants (Impactful - 3L)

Festuca glauca 'Elijah Blue' (Blue Fescue Grass)

  • Role: Silver-blue textural ground cover
  • Intensely silver-blue evergreen foliage forming tight rounded tussocks 20-30cm height and spread, delicate flower stems early summer (can remove if preferring foliage-only effect), provides year-round silver color and fine texture contrasting with bold-leaved plants.
  • Quantity: 4 plants (Starter - P9 plug), 7 plants (Standard - 1L), 12 plants (Impactful - 1L)

Perovskia atriplicifolia 'Blue Spire' (Russian Sage)

  • Role: Mid-border height and airy blue flowers
  • Lavender-blue flower spikes on silvery-white stems July-September, aromatic grey-green foliage, upright airy habit 90-120cm height, subshrub (woody base, herbaceous top growth), exceptional drought tolerance, provides vertical interest without bulk or heaviness.
  • Quantity: 2 plants (Starter - 1L), 3 plants (Standard - 2L), 4 plants (Impactful - 3L)

Echinops ritro 'Veitch's Blue' (Globe Thistle)

  • Role: Architectural form and textural interest
  • Metallic steel-blue spherical flower heads July-August on tall stems 80-100cm, deeply cut grey-green foliage, dramatic architectural presence, flowers dry well on plant creating autumn interest, attracts bees and butterflies, excellent structure plant.
  • Quantity: 2 plants (Starter - 1L), 3 plants (Standard - 2L), 5 plants (Impactful - 2L)

Stachys byzantina 'Big Ears' (Lamb's Ear - Large-Leaved Form)

  • Role: Bold silver ground cover
  • Extra-large soft silver felted leaves (larger than standard Lamb's Ear—hence 'Big Ears'), evergreen low carpet 15-25cm height spreading 40-60cm, produces pale purple flower spikes June-August (can deadhead if preferring foliage-only), dramatic silver presence particularly effective against dark Yew and blue flowers.
  • Quantity: 2 plants (Starter - P9 plug), 4 plants (Standard - 1L), 8 plants (Impactful - 2L)

COVERAGE & DESIGN:

  • Starter (5-7m²): Foundation silver-blue planting for entrance widths 2-2.5m. Topiary provides immediate dark architecture creating strong contrast with silver foliage. Plants establish over 12-18 months creating increasingly cohesive cool-toned composition as silver foliage spreads and blue flowers increase.
  • Standard (7-9m²): Balanced silver-blue composition for entrance widths 2.5-3.5m. Larger plant sizes (particularly Agapanthus and Perovskia in 2L) deliver more substantial architectural presence and flower impact from first season. Increased Festuca quantities create stronger silver carpet effect. Establishes cohesive sophisticated border within 8-12 months.
  • Impactful (9-12m²): Commanding silver-blue garden for entrance widths 3.5m+. Feature plants (Agapanthus 5 plants in 3L, Perovskia 4 plants in 3L) create dramatic blue flower presence. High quantities of silver foliage plants (12 Festuca, 8 Stachys) create continuous silver carpet. Near-mature sophisticated appearance within 6-9 months.

Colour palette is deliberately restrained and cool: deep evergreen Yew spirals, silver-blue Festuca, silver-grey Stachys, grey-green Agapanthus and Perovskia foliage, silvery-white Perovskia stems. Flowers are exclusively blue-spectrum: deep violet-blue Agapanthus, lavender-blue Perovskia, steel-blue Echinops. This monochromatic approach creates sophisticated unity—the composition reads as intentional contemporary design. The silver foliage is as important as flowers: Festuca and Stachys provide year-round silver presence (both evergreen), ensuring the border remains attractive even when not flowering. Drought tolerance is exceptional once established: Yew, Festuca, Perovskia, Echinops, and Stachys all tolerate dry conditions—making this bundle particularly suitable for sunny exposed positions or gardeners wanting low water requirements. Flowering progression ensures continuous blue July-September: Agapanthus peaks July-August, Perovskia and Echinops July-September overlapping, with architectural seed heads persisting into autumn.

Delivery

Every bundle is dispatched in upright pallet courier in containers. You'll receive pre-dispatch photos of your exact topiary pair and bundle for approval before shipping. Most orders dispatch within 2-3 weeks depending on season and location. Free UK mainland delivery included.

Care

ESTABLISHMENT PHASE (First 6-12 Months):

Topiary (English Yew Spirals):

  • Watering: 2-3× weekly during summer (containers dry faster than in-ground). Yew tolerates drought well but benefits from consistent moisture first season. Winter: once every 10-14 days in dry weather only.
  • Feeding: Once annually in spring (March-April) with slow-release shrub fertilizer, 50g per container.
  • See Complete Care Guide. Yew is exceptionally hardy and low-maintenance.

Border Plants:

  • Watering: 2-3× weekly during first spring/summer but allow to dry between waterings (Mediterranean/steppe plants dislike constant moisture). Water deeply when watering (encourages deep drought-resistant roots) but let dry out before next watering. Reduce frequency autumn. By winter, minimal watering needed.
  • Mulching: Use grit/gravel mulch (NOT organic mulch like bark/compost which retains moisture). 3-5cm layer of pea gravel around plants improves drainage and reflects light enhancing silver foliage.
  • No feeding required—these plants thrive in poor soils, excess fertility reduces silver foliage intensity and flower production.

ONGOING MAINTENANCE (Year 2 Onwards):

Topiary (English Yew):

  • Water 2-3× weekly in summer, minimal in winter (see Container Care Guide)
  • Feed once annually in spring (slow-release fertilizer, 50g per container)
  • Prune once annually late May-early June (Yew slow-growing, single trim sufficient)
  • See Pruning & Trimming Guide for spiral groove maintenance

Agapanthus 'Northern Star':
Drought-tolerant established—water only during prolonged drought. No feeding required (excess fertility reduces flowering). Deadhead spent flower stems after blooming or leave seed heads for architectural winter interest. Cut back dead foliage to ground late autumn or early spring. Mulch crowns 5-10cm with grit/bark November for winter protection (one of hardiest Agapanthus but benefits from light protection cold regions). Divide clumps every 5-7 years spring if flowering declines or creating more plants.

Festuca glauca 'Elijah Blue':
Extremely low maintenance. Drought-tolerant—water only extreme drought once established. No feeding required (excess fertility turns foliage green reducing desired blue color). Comb out dead foliage spring with fingers or rake. Divide every 3-4 years spring if centers dying out (typical for ornamental grasses). Very few pest/disease issues. Evergreen provides year-round silver-blue colour.

Perovskia atriplicifolia 'Blue Spire':
Very low maintenance. Drought-tolerant—rarely needs watering established. No feeding required. Cut back hard to 15-30cm from ground each spring (March-April) before new growth starts—encourages strong stems and prevents woodiness. Don't prune autumn (leave stems for winter interest and frost protection for woody base). Virtually pest/disease-free. Subshrub—woody base persists, herbaceous top dies back winter.

Echinops ritro 'Veitch's Blue':
Low maintenance. Drought-tolerant established—rarely needs watering. No feeding required. Deadhead after flowering if preventing self-seeding or leave dramatic seed heads for autumn/winter structure. Cut back all foliage to ground late autumn or early spring. Divide every 5-6 years spring if clumps becoming congested. Minimal pest/disease issues. Tap-rooted—dislikes disturbance once established so position carefully initially.

Stachys byzantina 'Big Ears':
Very low maintenance. Drought-tolerant—avoid overwatering (causes rot). No feeding required. Remove tatty or damaged leaves spring and autumn. Produces flower spikes June-August—deadhead if preferring foliage-only effect or leave for bees. Divide every 3-4 years if spreading too vigorously or to rejuvenate. Evergreen provides year-round silver presence.

GETTING HELP:

Lifetime email support: hello@topiarytwins.co.uk (24-hour typical response). No time limit, no cost. Species-specific guidance for all plants in your bundle available forever.

Planting & Positioning

SITE REQUIREMENTS:

Light: Full sun preferred. All plants in this bundle thrive in full sun (6+ hours daily). Topiary (Yew) tolerates partial shade but border plants need sun for best silver foliage color and blue flower production. This is an ideal bundle for hot sunny exposed positions where many plants struggle—these species are adapted to heat and sun.

Soil: Well-drained essential. All plants require excellent drainage—avoid waterlogged positions or heavy clay without amendment. Festuca, Perovskia, and Echinops particularly intolerant of winter wet (causes rot). Amend heavy soils with grit/sharp sand (at least 30% by volume) before planting. These are Mediterranean/steppe-climate plants adapted to dry well-drained conditions.

Space: Minimum 2m width for Starter, 2.5m for Standard, 3.5m for Impactful. Allow 70-80cm clearance from topiary container edge to door frame (see Placement Guide).

POSITIONING LAYOUT:

Step 1: Position Topiary Spirals
Place containers 140-160cm apart (centre to centre) depending on entrance width. Dark Yew spirals create strong architectural contrast with silver foliage—ensure positioning allows this contrast to be appreciated. Ensure containers sit level.

Step 2: Plant Agapanthus
Position in prominent locations—these are focal architectural plants. Space 60-80cm apart (need room for clump development and tall flower stems). Position where tall flower stems (80-100cm) won't block sightlines but create dramatic vertical accents. Mid-border or slightly back.

Step 3: Plant Perovskia (Russian Sage)
Position in mid-ground between topiary and front edge, or flanking Agapanthus. Space 70-90cm apart (becomes 90-120cm width at maturity—needs space for airy habit). Provides vertical height without density—see-through stems create lightness.

Step 4: Plant Echinops (Globe Thistle)
Scatter throughout mid-ground. Space 60-70cm apart. Architectural spherical flower heads provide punctuation marks amongst softer plants. Don't crowd—dramatic form needs space to be appreciated.

Step 5: Plant Festuca (Blue Fescue)
Use as ground cover throughout front and mid-ground creating silver-blue carpet. Space 30-35cm apart (tight spacing creates cohesive effect faster). Plant in groups of 3-5 creating drifts rather than single scattered specimens—more effective visually.

Step 6: Plant Stachys 'Big Ears'
Position along front edges or around topiary bases. Space 35-40cm apart (spreads to 40-60cm). Large silver leaves create bold ground-level presence—use strategically where you want strong silver impact.

ESTABLISHMENT CARE (First 6 Months):

Topiary: Water 2-3× weekly during first summer. Even drought-tolerant Yew benefits from consistent moisture when newly positioned. Feed once in spring. See Complete Care Guide.

Border Plants: Water 2-3× weekly first growing season. Despite eventual drought tolerance, these plants need consistent moisture during establishment (roots must develop before tolerating drought). Avoid overwatering Festuca and Perovskia—let dry between waterings. Mulch with grit/gravel (not organic mulch which retains moisture these plants dislike). No feeding Year 1.

By 6 months: Starter plants rooted and establishing silver foliage developing (30-40% mature). Standard plants established with strong silver presence (50-70% mature, good flowering from Agapanthus/Perovskia/Echinops). Impactful plants quickly established with dramatic silver-blue appearance (70-90% mature, substantial architectural presence from first season).
