SITE REQUIREMENTS:
Light: Full sun to partial shade. Topiary (Photinia) thrives in full sun (produces most intense red new growth) but tolerates partial shade. All border plants prefer full sun (6+ hours daily) for best flowering and warm color intensity—warm colors appear richer in strong light. This bundle is ideal for hot sunny positions.
Soil: Well-drained, moderate fertility. Most plants are prairie/meadow natives adapted to average soil. Avoid waterlogged positions (particularly for Crocosmia corms—rot in winter wet). Rudbeckia, Helenium, and Echinacea tolerate clay if drainage adequate. Miscanthus adapts to wide range.
Space: Minimum 2m width for Starter, 2.5m for Standard, 3.5m for Impactful. Allow 70-80cm clearance from topiary container edge to door frame (see Placement Guide). Note: Miscanthus becomes 100-120cm width mature—plan accordingly.
POSITIONING LAYOUT:
Step 1: Position Topiary Lollipops
Place containers 120-150cm apart (center to center) depending on entrance width. Red new growth on elevated canopies provides colour at eye level—position where this will be appreciated. Ensure containers sit level.
Step 2: Plant Miscanthus (Maiden Grass)
Position as backdrop or to sides where tall graceful habit (120-150cm) won't obscure topiary but provides structural presence. Space 100-120cm apart (mature width 100-120cm—needs space). Creates vertical punctuation marks and movement (grass sways in breeze).
Step 3: Plant Crocosmia
Position in mid-ground where tall flower spikes (100-120cm) create dramatic vertical accents. Space 40-50cm apart. Corms multiply creating expanding clumps—this spacing allows development. Sword-like foliage provides structure even before flowering.
Step 4: Plant Rudbeckia
Scatter generously throughout mid-ground and foreground. Space 50-60cm apart. High quantities (particularly Impactful with 9 plants) create golden drifts—essential for warm border impact. Forms substantial clumps providing mass of colour.
Step 5: Plant Helenium
Intersperse with Rudbeckia throughout mid-ground. Space 50-60cm apart. Orange-red tones provide color depth preventing composition from being all-yellow. Mix with Rudbeckia rather than segregating—creates blended warm effect.
Step 6: Plant Echinacea
Position where prominent central cones will be visible and appreciated (these are architectural features). Space 50-60cm apart. Provides vertical structure with upward-facing flowers—contrasts with nodding Rudbeckia and Helenium daisies.

ESTABLISHMENT CARE (First 6 Months):
Topiary: Water 2-3× weekly during first summer. Photinia grows vigorously and benefits from consistent moisture. Feed once in spring. See Complete Care Guide for full maintenance including tip on trimming to stimulate red growth flushes.
Border Plants: Water 2-3× weekly first growing season until established. Despite eventual drought tolerance, these prairie plants need consistent moisture during establishment. Mulch 5cm around plants (keep clear of stems). No feeding required Year 1.
By 6 months: Starter plants rooted and establishing (30-40% mature, limited flowering first season except Rudbeckia). Standard plants established with noticeable warm presence (50-70% mature, good flowering from all perennials). Impactful plants quickly established with abundant warm display (70-90% mature, impressive warm colour from first season).
