Details

This bundle combines classical Bay Laurel lollipops with traditional English garden plants to create a formal yet approachable entrance composition. The elevated canopies provide architectural presence at eye level whilst maintaining clear sightlines and circulation beneath. Surrounding border plants deliver structure, fragrance, and seasonal color in purple, silver, and blue tones that complement rather than compete with the topiary's evergreen formality.

WHAT'S INCLUDED:

Topiary Anchor:

  • 2× Bay Laurel Lollipop Trees (Laurus nobilis)
  • Clear stem: 80-100cm height, 10-12cm girth (substantial, mature stems)
  • Ball canopy: 40-50cm diameter, densely clipped evergreen foliage
  • Aromatic dark green leaves year-round, responsive to clipping, containerised and ready to position

Border Plants (quantity and size vary by variant):

Lavandula angustifolia 'Hidcote' (English Lavender)

  • Role: Foreground structure and fragrance
  • Deep purple-blue flowers June-August, aromatic silver-grey foliage, drought-tolerant once established, compact habit 40-50cm mature height.
  • Quantity: 3 plants (Starter - 1L), 6 plants (Standard - 2L), 10 plants (Impactful - 2L)

Stachys byzantina 'Silver Carpet' (Lamb's Ear)

  • Role: Ground cover and textural contrast
  • Soft silver evergreen foliage, non-flowering cultivar (selected for foliage only), spreads to create low carpet 15-20cm height, excellent edging plant.
  • Quantity: 3 plants (Starter - P9 plug), 5 plants (Standard - 2L), 8 plants (Impactful - 1L)

Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna' (Balkan Clary)

  • Role: Mid-border vertical interest
  • Deep violet-purple flower spikes June-September on near-black stems, long flowering season, upright habit 50-60cm, attracts pollinators, excellent structure even after flowering.
  • Quantity: 2 plants (Starter - 1L), 3 plants (Standard - 2L), 5 plants (Impactful - 3L)

Allium 'Purple Sensation' (Ornamental Onion)

  • Role: Spring-early summer drama
  • Vivid purple spherical flowers May-June on tall stems 80-100cm, architectural seed heads persist through summer, bulbs naturalize and multiply over years, striking vertical accent.
  • Quantity: 2 bulbs (Starter - 12/14cm), 3 bulbs (Standard - 14/16cm), 5 bulbs (Impactful - 16/18cm)

Nepeta × faassenii 'Six Hills Giant' (Catmint)

  • Role: Softening billowing texture
  • Violet-blue flower spikes June-September, aromatic grey-green foliage, billowing habit 45-60cm height and 60-90cm spread, softens hard edges of paving and containers.
  • Quantity: 2 plants (Starter - 1L), 3 plants (Standard - 2L), 6 plants (Impactful - 3L)

COVERAGE & DESIGN:

  • Starter (5-7m²): Foundation planting suitable for entrance widths 2-2.5m. Topiary provides immediate presence, border plants establish over 12-18 months creating layered depth.
  • Standard (7-9m²): Balanced composition for entrance widths 2.5-3.5m. More generous plant quantities create fuller appearance from delivery, establishing cohesive composition within 8-12 months.
  • Impactful (9-12m²): Commanding presence for entrance widths 3.5m+. Larger plant sizes and increased quantities deliver near-mature appearance within 6-9 months, dramatic impact from installation.

The colour palette is deliberately restrained: deep green topiary, purple-violet flowers (Lavender, Salvia, Allium, Nepeta), and silver foliage (Stachys). This creates visual cohesion whilst the topiary lollipops remain the clear focal point. The elevated canopies allow layered planting beneath without visual clutter—everything visible, nothing competing. Seasonal progression ensures year-round interest: spring Allium drama, summer Lavender and Salvia color, autumn seed heads, winter evergreen structure from topiary and Stachys.

Delivery

Every bundle is dispatched in upright pallet courier in containers. You'll receive pre-dispatch photos of your exact topiary pair and bundle for approval before shipping. Most orders dispatch within 2-3 weeks depending on season and location. Free UK mainland delivery included.

Care

ESTABLISHMENT PHASE (First 6-12 Months):

Topiary (Bay Laurel Lollipops):

  • Watering: 2-3× weekly during summer (containers dry faster than in-ground). Check moisture before watering—if compost is damp 5cm down, skip watering. Winter: once every 10-14 days in dry weather only.
  • Feeding: Once annually in spring (March-April) with slow-release shrub fertilizer, 50g per container.
  • See Complete Care Guide for comprehensive topiary maintenance including winter protection (Bay Laurel hardy to -5 to -10°C, may need fleece protection in severe frost).

Border Plants:

  • Watering: 2-3× weekly during first spring/summer. Water deeply (15-20L per m²) to encourage deep root growth. Reduce frequency progressively—by autumn, weekly watering sufficient.
  • Mulching: Apply 5cm layer of bark mulch or compost after planting. Keep mulch 5cm clear of plant stems.
  • No feeding required Year 1—planting compost contains nutrients.

ONGOING MAINTENANCE (Year 2 Onwards):

Topiary (Bay Laurel):

  • Water 2-3× weekly in summer, minimal in winter (see Container Care Guide)
  • Feed once annually in spring (slow-release fertilizer, 50g per container)
  • Prune 2-3× annually May-August (Bay Laurel grows vigorously, needs frequent trimming to maintain tight canopy)
  • See Pruning & Trimming Guide for lollipop-specific techniques

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia 'Hidcote'):
Drought-tolerant established—water only during extended dry spells (3+ weeks no rain). Trim after flowering (August) removing spent stems plus 2-3cm foliage. Light spring tidy-up (April) removing winter-damaged growth. Avoid hard pruning into old woody stems. Lifespan 8-12 years before replacement needed.

Stachys (Lamb's Ear 'Silver Carpet'):
Extremely low maintenance. Drought-tolerant—avoid overwatering (causes rot). No feeding required. Remove tatty or damaged leaves spring and autumn. This cultivar doesn't flower (non-flowering form selected for foliage). Tidy edges if spreading beyond desired area.

Salvia (Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna'):
Drought-tolerant established. Light spring feed (balanced fertilizer) optional. Cut back after first flush of flowers (July) to 10-15cm—encourages second flowering September. Tidy in late autumn (November) or early spring (March)—cut all growth to ground level. Very reliable, minimal care required.

Allium (Ornamental Onion 'Purple Sensation'):
Plant-and-forget bulbs. No watering needed after establishment (drought-tolerant). No feeding required (bulbs self-sufficient). Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering (June-July)—don't cut until completely yellow/brown. Bulbs naturalise and multiply over years. Lift and divide every 4-5 years if overcrowded.

Nepeta (Catmint 'Six Hills Giant'):
Drought-tolerant established—water only extreme dry spells. Light spring feed (balanced fertilizer) optional. Cut back hard after first flowering (July) to 10-15cm—encourages second flush September. Tidy late autumn (November) or early spring (March)—cut all growth to ground. Nearly indestructible, very low maintenance.

Planting & Positioning

SITE REQUIREMENTS:

Light: Full sun to partial shade. Topiary (Bay Laurel) tolerates partial shade but grows most densely in full sun. Border plants prefer full sun (6+ hours daily) but tolerate light shade. Avoid deep shade.

Soil: Well-drained, moderate fertility. Bay Laurel requires excellent drainage—avoid waterlogged positions. Border plants tolerate wide range but need good drainage. Amend heavy clay with grit/compost before planting.

Space: Minimum 2m width for Starter, 2.5m for Standard, 3.5m for Impactful. Allow 70-80cm clearance from container edge to door frame (see Placement Guide).

POSITIONING LAYOUT:

Step 1: Position Topiary Lollipops
Place containers 120-150cm apart (center to center) depending on entrance width. Elevated canopies should align at eye level (approximately 140-150cm from ground including container). Ensure containers sit on stable level surface.

Step 2: Plant Lavender
Position in clusters of 2-3 plants, spacing 60-80cm in front of topiary containers. Within clusters, space individual plants 35-40cm apart. Creates foreground interest without obscuring lollipop stems.

Step 3: Plant Stachys (Lamb's Ear)
Use as edging along front of planting area or around topiary container bases. Space 30-40cm apart. Creates soft silver border defining composition's edge.

Step 4: Plant Salvia
Position in mid-ground between Lavender clusters and topiary. Space 45-50cm apart. Upright habit fills vertical space between low Lavender and elevated topiary canopies.

Step 5: Plant Allium Bulbs
Plant bulbs 15-20cm deep in clusters of 2-3 behind or beside topiary (October-November for May-June flowering). Tall stems will rise through composition creating punctuation marks in spring.

Step 6: Plant Nepeta
Fill remaining gaps in mid-ground. Space 50-60cm apart. Billowing habit softens hard edges of paving and containers as it matures.

DETAILED LAYOUT PLANS:

ESTABLISHMENT CARE (First 6 Months):

Topiary: Water 2-3× weekly during first summer, feed once in spring. Bay Laurel in containers needs consistent moisture. See Complete Care Guide for full maintenance.

Border Plants: Water 2-3× weekly first growing season until established. Mulch 5cm around plants (keep clear of stems). No feeding required in Year 1—planting compost contains nutrients.

By 6 months: Starter plants rooted and growing steadily (30-40% mature size). Standard plants established with noticeable presence (50-70% mature). Impactful plants quickly established, near-mature appearance (70-90%).
