Your two plants will never differ in height by more than 10cm. That is the whole promise, and it is measurable on the doorstep with a tape.
If the pair that arrives isn't matched, email hello@topiarytwins.co.uk within 7 days of delivery, subject line “Matching Guarantee Claim – [order number]”, with a photograph of the two plants together. Claims are resolved within 24 hours, and the resolution is your choice: a replacement pair, or a full refund.

If one of your plants fails to thrive in its first six months, we replace it at 50% of the single-plant cost. Worked example: a £1,000 pair is £500 a plant, so the replacement costs you £250. One honest exclusion: if both plants fail, the guarantee doesn't apply. Two identical failures point at the site rather than the stock — drainage, wind, a buried rubble layer — and swapping the plants would only repeat the problem. Either side of a gate or door
Stand at the gate and look at the frontage as one shape. A pencil pair works like two vertical exclamation marks — the eye is lifted up the elevation, the threshold is announced before anyone reaches it, and the symmetry photographs as established from the first day. Scale by the height of the opening rather than the width of the bed: a 1.3–1.7m pair sits right beside a standard door or gate, while a tall elevation, a deep porch or a pair of gate piers will carry 1.7–2m and upwards without blinking. All of that happens in a strip of ground no other form would accept, because the column is barely wider than its pot. The rest of our front door plants are built around the same move — the pencil simply does it in the least ground.
The Mediterranean terrace — and the avenue
Sun, gravel, terracotta, a pale wall: the pencil's home ground, translated. A pair of dark columns against render gives a British patio the grammar of a Tuscan courtyard — hard light, vertical shadows swinging round like a sundial — and it is the fastest single route to a courtyard or patio that reads designed rather than themed. Repeat the move and you get the other half of the idea: pairs set down both sides of a drive turn an arrival into an avenue, which is the oldest job this tree has. Scale it up with the driveways and pathways collection. Two conditions, non-negotiable in both positions: full sun, and drainage sharp enough that winter wet never sits at the roots.

Every garden has a budget of ground; almost none has a budget of sky. Which height pencil pair should I choose?
Pencil pairs are sold by height band, from 1.1–1.3m up to a full 2.5–2.7m. Measure the thing the pair has to answer — the door, the gate, the elevation — rather than the bed it stands in. 1.1–1.5m suits pots, low walls and small courtyards; 1.5–1.7m is the everyday gate-and-doorway size on a standard frontage; 1.7–2m begins to hold a taller elevation or close a sightline; and the 2–2.5m and 2.5–2.7m bands are for gate piers, long avenues and real architecture. Remember that a taller column is simply an older tree — more growing-years behind it — so the upper bands arrive denser and better furnished, and the price moves with the age rather than the postage.
How closely will my two plants match?
Closely, because they were grown as twins rather than picked as a pair on dispatch day. Which pencil is right for my spot?
Site first, looks second — and for this form the site rule is Mediterranean and non-negotiable: full sun and sharp drainage, because it is winter wet rather than winter cold that defeats a cypress. Deep shade or heavy waterlogged clay is the wrong ground for the whole form. Given sun and drainage, choose by height and colour. Solis & Marek, our Italian cypress 'Stricta' pair, is the tightest, truest column and the gentlest entry price at 1.1–2m. Alto & Luce, the 'Totem' pair, holds the same heights in a compact column with the densest deep-green surface. Eron & Valea, the classic avenue cypress, is a touch fuller in the column and reaches the tallest green band at 2–2.5m. And if you want the vertical in another colour, Aurek & Lumi is the golden pencil pair — lime-gold foliage that holds its colour through winter, a full 2.5–2.7m tall.
How far apart should the pair sit?
At a door or gate, one column each side, centred on the opening and clear of the swing — the pair should frame the threshold, never narrow it. Along a drive or a path, the pencil is the one form you can plant tight, because the column is barely wider than its pot: the gap becomes a design decision rather than a horticultural one. Leave noticeably more air than the column is wide and the eye reads a rhythm of separate trees; set them close and the same trees read as one green wall. Both are legitimate — just decide which you want before you dig. How do I keep the column tight?
Barely any work — that is the pencil's whole bargain. The column grows tight of its own accord rather than being clipped into shape, so one light tidy a year, running over any stray tips, keeps it immaculate. The rule that matters: never cut into old bare wood. Cypress does not regrow from it, so a hole cut back into the brown stays a hole — trim the green surface only. Work down the column in short passes rather than lunging at it, and step back constantly: on a vertical the eye catches a lean or a bulge long before the hand feels one. On a hard-exposed, windy site, stake young columns through their first seasons while the roots take hold.
How is a pencil pair delivered?
Kerbside, on its own pallet, by a specialist plant haulier, UK-wide. Your two columns travel upright and are never boxed, the consignment is fully tracked, and the driver phones about an hour ahead so you can be there when he arrives. Allow 14–21 working days from order — the pair is being selected, photographed and documented during that window, not sitting in a warehouse. Delivery is to the kerb, so plan how you'll move two well-grown plants from the kerb to their position before the pallet lands.
