Your two plants will never differ in height by more than 10cm. That is the whole promise, and it is measurable on the doorstep with a tape.
If the pair that arrives isn't matched, email hello@topiarytwins.co.uk within 7 days of delivery, subject line “Matching Guarantee Claim – [order number]”, with a photograph of the two plants together. Claims are resolved within 24 hours, and the resolution is your choice: a replacement pair, or a full refund.

The 6-Month Thrive Guarantee
If one of your plants fails to thrive in its first six months, we replace it at 50% of the single-plant cost. Worked example: a £1,000 pair is £500 a plant, so the replacement costs you £250. Eligibility is reviewed within 48 hours of your email — subject line “Thrive Guarantee Claim – [order number]”.
One honest exclusion: if both plants fail, the guarantee doesn't apply. Two identical failures point at the site rather than the stock — drainage, wind, a buried rubble layer — and swapping the plants would only repeat the problem. The courtyard soloist
Cloud trees are soloists, and the commonest mistake is crowding them. Give the pair room and a calm backdrop and the eye reads every pad and, just as importantly, every gap between them — the negative space is half the composition. One pair per sightline is the whole rule. An enclosed courtyard is their natural theatre: architectural, viewed at close range from a seat or through a window, and quiet enough that nothing competes with the silhouette. The courtyard and patio collection is built around exactly this discipline.
Against render, gravel or water
The form is really two compositions at once: the pads, and the silhouette that carries them. A pale rendered wall or a clean fence stages the second, drawing the dark branch lines like ink strokes; gravel does the same job underfoot by keeping the ground quiet; and still water doubles the first by reflection. Set a cloud pair against a busy border and you lose both. Set it against something plain and it becomes statement topiary in the purest sense — sculpture that happens to be alive, and that grows slowly better every year.
Lit after dark
The form's best trick costs one uplight per tree. Ground-level lighting throws the exposed branch structure into shadow-play across walls and paving while the pads glow as floating shapes — a second garden that only exists after dark, and no other topiary form repays lighting like this one. It is also the argument for putting a pair where you will see it in the evening: flanking a door, a gate or a glazed opening you look out of at night. Which height cloud pair should I choose?
Cloud pairs are sold by the overall height of the tree. The Delavay privet pair comes in three bands: 1.3–1.5m for an enclosed courtyard and close viewing; 1.5–1.7m, which puts the pads at eye level and is the size most buyers want; and 1.7–2m, the architecture-scale silhouette for a larger courtyard or a taller elevation. The Otto Luyken laurel pair is grown at 1.5–1.7m only. Judge the height against the wall, window or opening the pair has to answer rather than against the bed, and remember that a taller tree is an older tree — more years of pad-building behind it — so the price moves with the age rather than the postage.
How closely will my two plants match?
Closely, because they were grown as twins rather than picked as a pair on dispatch day. We guarantee a height difference of no more than 10cm between them, and before your pallet is built you receive your pair's quality-control certificate — origins, dimensions and six photographs of your actual two trees — with 24 hours to review before dispatch. Both are hardy evergreens proven in British gardens, so choose by backdrop, budget and appetite for the shears. Théa & Plume, our Delavay privet pair, is the way in: small dense leaves that close into crisp, tight pads, fast recovery from every cut, and a forgiving temperament that grows through any mistake — ideal for first cloud buyers and for anyone who enjoys the pad-by-pad ritual. Where should the pair sit, and how far apart?
One pair per sightline, with room around it — a cloud tree is a soloist, and crowding one is the commonest mistake buyers make. Flanking a door, a gate or a glazed opening, set the two trees clear of the swing and far enough apart that the pads of one never touch the pads of the other, because the gap between the trees does the same work as the gaps between the pads. Give both a calm backdrop: render, a clean wall, gravel or still water. Then add one uplight per tree and the branch structure works a second shift after dark. How do I keep the pads crisp?
Pad by pad, never over the top of the tree. Work around each cloud in turn with shears, keeping the underside of every pad crisp so the gaps between them stay open — the negative space is the composition, so resist letting two pads merge into one. Privet asks two or three short sessions a year and forgives everything by growing through it; Otto Luyken laurel asks fewer, slower cuts, taken with secateurs rather than shears so you never leave a sheared-through leaf on show. How is a cloud pair delivered?
Kerbside, on its own pallet, by a specialist plant haulier, UK-wide. Your two trees travel upright and are never boxed, the consignment is fully tracked, and the driver phones about an hour ahead so you can be there when he arrives. Allow 14–21 working days from order — the pair is being selected, photographed and documented during that window, not sitting in a warehouse. Delivery is to the kerb, so plan how you'll move two well-grown plants from the kerb to their position before the pallet lands.
