Bay owners eventually meet this one: leaf edges thickening, curling inward and yellowing, usually on a minority of leaves, caused by a tiny sap-sucking insect that shelters in the curl it creates. Here's the important sentence: bay sucker is cosmetic — it does not threaten the tree, spread to other species, or worsen dramatically year on year.

Box blight is a fungal disease causing rapid brown patches, heavy leaf drop and black streaking on stems; it spreads by spore in warm wet conditions, survives on fallen leaves, and has no cure — management means cutting out infection, burning the material, disinfecting tools, and hoping, often through repeated rounds. Box tree moth arrived more recently: its green-and-black caterpillars, hidden in webbing, can strip a mature box ball in weeks; treatment (picking, pheromone traps, targeted biological sprays) is possible but relentless, with multiple generations a year.
