Italian Cypress Pencil Pair - Solis & Marek

Pencil pairs are sold by height band, from 1.1–1.3m up to a full 2.5–2.7m. Measure the thing the pair has to answer — the door, the gate, the elevation — rather than the bed it stands in. 1.1–1.5m suits pots, low walls and small courtyards; 1.5–1.7m is the everyday gate-and-doorway size on a standard frontage; 1.7–2m begins to hold a taller elevation or close a sightline; and the 2–2.5m and 2.5–2.7m bands are for gate piers, long avenues and real architecture. Remember that a taller column is simply an older tree — more growing-years behind it — so the upper bands arrive denser and better furnished, and the price moves with the age rather than the postage.

Site first, looks second — and for this form the site rule is Mediterranean and non-negotiable: full sun and sharp drainage, because it is winter wet rather than winter cold that defeats a cypress. Deep shade or heavy waterlogged clay is the wrong ground for the whole form. Given sun and drainage, choose by height and colour. Solis & Marek, our Italian cypress 'Stricta' pair, is the tightest, truest column and the gentlest entry price at 1.1–2m. Alto & Luce, the 'Totem' pair, holds the same heights in a compact column with the densest deep-green surface. At a door or gate, one column each side, centred on the opening and clear of the swing — the pair should frame the threshold, never narrow it. Along a drive or a path, the pencil is the one form you can plant tight, because the column is barely wider than its pot: the gap becomes a design decision rather than a horticultural one. Leave noticeably more air than the column is wide and the eye reads a rhythm of separate trees; set them close and the same trees read as one green wall. Barely any work — that is the pencil's whole bargain. The column grows tight of its own accord rather than being clipped into shape, so one light tidy a year, running over any stray tips, keeps it immaculate. The rule that matters: never cut into old bare wood. Cypress does not regrow from it, so a hole cut back into the brown stays a hole — trim the green surface only. Work down the column in short passes rather than lunging at it, and step back constantly: on a vertical the eye catches a lean or a bulge long before the hand feels one. On a hard-exposed, windy site, stake young columns through their first seasons while the roots take hold.

Kerbside, on its own pallet, by a specialist plant haulier, UK-wide. Your two columns travel upright and are never boxed, the consignment is fully tracked, and the driver phones about an hour ahead so you can be there when he arrives.
