Your two plants will never differ in height by more than 10cm. That is the whole promise, and it is measurable on the doorstep with a tape.
If the pair that arrives isn't matched, email hello@topiarytwins.co.uk within 7 days of delivery, subject line “Matching Guarantee Claim – [order number]”, with a photograph of the two plants together. Claims are resolved within 24 hours, and the resolution is your choice: a replacement pair, or a full refund.

If one of your plants fails to thrive in its first six months, we replace it at 50% of the single-plant cost. Worked example: a £1,000 pair is £500 a plant, so the replacement costs you £250. One honest exclusion: if both plants fail, the guarantee doesn't apply. Two identical failures point at the site rather than the stock — drainage, wind, a buried rubble layer — and swapping the plants would only repeat the problem. The courtyard centrepiece
A bonsai pair is the strongest single move a small formal space can make: one sculpted silhouette per sightline, set against calm hard landscaping, doing the work of a whole border from two positions. Keep the backdrop quiet — render, stone, a clipped hedge — because every competing plant steals a little of the trunk line, and uplight the pair so that line still reads after dark. Both trees take a generous frost-proof container happily, which is how most courtyard and patio schemes use them, and the modest canopy keeps weight and windage sane on a balcony or roof terrace. Real drainage holes and pot feet from October: potted roots must never sit in frozen water.
The gravel or Japanese-style garden
This is the form's spiritual home. Raked gravel, stone and moss exist to frame exactly this — an authored trunk and floating pads with nothing else asking for attention — and a matched pair lets the composition hold from two approaches at once rather than one. Give each tree its own clear ground: a metre of gravel around the base is not empty space, it is what makes the silhouette legible. Then leave the surroundings alone. The discipline the great Japanese gardens practise is mostly restraint about what you plant next to the thing you actually want people to look at.
An entrance that has to look established
Two trained trees either side of a door, a gate or a frontage read as deliberate and long-settled from the first day — which is precisely why hotels and restaurants buy pairs rather than borders. Scale the height to the opening: 1.1–1.5m suits a standard door and lets the trunk line sit at eye level, while 1.5–2m carries double doors, a deep porch or a commercial frontage. Set them clear of the door swing and of the line people actually walk, and keep the pair symmetrical about the opening rather than about the path. Which size bonsai pair should I choose?
Bonsai pairs are sold by overall tree height, in bands from 70–90cm up to 1.7–2m — but height is only half the story, because what you are buying is training years. 70cm–1.3m suits courtyards, containers and close viewing, where the trunk line is read from a metre or two away; 1.3–1.7m holds a wider sightline and is the comfortable middle for most gardens; 1.7–2m is the frontage band, for double doors, deep porches and commercial entrances that have to look established on day one. A taller tree has had more seasons of trunk-setting and pad-building at the nursery, so the upper bands arrive with a heavier trunk, more pads and more authored character — and the price moves with those years rather than with the postage.
How closely will my two plants match?
Closely, because they were trained as twins rather than picked as a pair on dispatch day. Which bonsai pair is right for my spot?
Register first, then let the site confirm it. For the tightest classical deep-green pads — the ones that read most like painted bonsai — take Sael & Nami, the Delavay privet pair. Dark brick, dark render or a shaded frontage that wants lifting suits Oud & Sola, the golden cypress pair, while steel, glass and contemporary architecture take the cool silver-blue of Skyll & Vesper, the blue Arizona cypress pair. For the finest leaf texture and the entry point of the collection, Kiri & Suki, the Japanese holly pair, carries the most detailed pad surface of the six. Beside old stone, or in shade and exposure where the others sulk, Rei & Morrow, the English yew pair, is the heritage register and the longest-lived. And if the position is sheltered and deserves flowers, Mira & Hane, the Japanese camellia pair, blooms on sculpted pads — the one flowering exception in the family.
Where should the pair go, and how far apart?
One pair per sightline, against a calm backdrop — rendered wall, gravel, clipped hedge — with nothing competing for the eye, and uplit at night so the trunk line still reads after dark. At a door or a gate, one tree each side, centred on the width available and clear of the door swing, symmetrical about the opening rather than about the path. Elsewhere, give each tree at least its own canopy width of clear ground all round: the space is not empty, it is what makes the silhouette legible. A busy mixed border is the one place a bonsai is wasted. How do I keep the pads?
You curate rather than train — the demanding decade already happened at the nursery. Work with hand shears, once or twice a year, following the existing dome of each pad: you are keeping an edge, not creating a shape. Clear any shoots that break out along the bare trunk and branch lines at the same time, because those are what blur an authored silhouette. Privet takes two or three light passes a year, the cypresses one or two, and English yew and camellia a single trim. One hard rule on the conifer pairs: never cut into bare wood, because leafless conifer branches will not reshoot — every cut stays within the green. How is a bonsai pair delivered?
Kerbside, on its own pallet, by a specialist plant haulier, UK-wide. Your two trees travel upright and are never boxed, the consignment is fully tracked, and the driver phones about an hour ahead so you can be there when he arrives. Allow 14–21 working days from order — the pair is being selected, photographed and documented during that window, not sitting in a warehouse. Delivery is to the kerb, so plan how you'll move two well-grown, heavily trained trees from the kerb to their position before the pallet lands.
