Details

This bundle combines architectural English Yew spirals with fragrant classics—Lavender, Roses, and Sweet Rocket—to create an entrance that engages scent as much as sight. The dark evergreen spirals provide permanent sculptural presence whilst surrounding plants deliver waves of fragrance from spring through autumn. Evening-scented Sweet Violet adds twilight perfume, and Philadelphus contributes intoxicating early-summer blooms. This is sensory architecture: structure you can smell.

WHAT'S INCLUDED:

Topiary Anchor:

  • 2× English Yew Spiral Topiary Trees (Taxus baccata)
  • Height: 110-130cm (identical across all variants—topiary size doesn't vary)
  • Helical form with 2-3 complete rotations, 8-12cm groove width, mature specimens 7-10 years old
  • Deep evergreen foliage year-round, exceptionally hardy (-20°C+), containerised and ready to position

Border Plants (quantity and size vary by variant):

Lavandula angustifolia 'Vera' (True English Lavender)

  • Role: Foreground fragrance and structure
  • Classic English Lavender with mid-blue flowers July-August, intensely aromatic grey-green foliage, compact habit 50-60cm mature height, traditional cottage garden variety prized for essential oil production.
  • Quantity: 3 plants (Starter - 1L), 6 plants (Standard - 2L), 10 plants (Impactful - 3L)

Rosa 'Gertrude Jekyll' (English Climbing Rose)

  • Role: Backdrop fragrance and color
  • Rich pink deeply fragrant flowers June-September, classic old-rose scent (one of the most fragrant David Austin varieties), repeat flowering through summer, climbs 2.5-3m against wall/fence behind topiary.
  • Quantity: 2 plants (Starter - 2L), 2 plants (Standard - 3L), 2 plants (Impactful - 5L)

Philadelphus 'Belle Etoile' (Mock Orange)

  • Role: Structural shrub with intoxicating scent
  • White star-shaped flowers with maroon centers May-June, powerfully fragrant (orange blossom scent carries across garden), deciduous arching habit 1.5-2m height and spread, provides structure even when not flowering.
  • Quantity: 1 plant (Starter - 2L), 1 plant (Standard - 3L), 1 plant (Impactful - 5L)

Hesperis matronalis (Sweet Rocket / Dame's Violet)

  • Role: Evening fragrance and cottage charm
  • Purple-white flower spikes May-July, clove-like scent intensifies at dusk (evening-scented), biennial/short-lived perennial that self-seeds gently, upright habit 60-90cm, old-fashioned cottage garden classic.
  • Quantity: 3 plants (Starter - P9 plug), 5 plants (Standard - 1L), 9 plants (Impactful - 1L)

Viola odorata (Sweet Violet)

  • Role: Ground cover with spring fragrance
  • Violet-purple flowers February-April, sweet violet fragrance (delicate, nostalgic scent), evergreen heart-shaped leaves, low spreading ground cover 10-15cm height, naturalizes in shaded areas beneath topiary and shrubs.
  • Quantity: 3 plants (Starter - P9 plug), 6 plants (Standard - P9 plug), 12 plants (Impactful - P9 plug)

COVERAGE & DESIGN:

  • Starter (5-7m²): Foundation planting for entrance widths 2-2.5m. Topiary provides immediate architectural impact, fragrant border plants establish over 12-18 months creating layered scent progression through seasons.
  • Standard (7-9m²): Balanced composition for entrance widths 2.5-3.5m. Larger plant sizes (particularly Roses and Philadelphus in 3L) deliver more immediate fragrance whilst maintaining sustainable growth rates. Establishes cohesive scented composition within 8-12 months.
  • Impactful (9-12m²): Commanding presence for entrance widths 3.5m+. Feature shrubs (Roses and Philadelphus in 5L) are mature specimens providing substantial fragrance from first season. Increased quantities of ground-layer plants (Hesperis, Viola) create fragrant carpet. Near-mature appearance within 6-9 months.

Fragrance progression creates year-round sensory interest: late winter Sweet Violet (February-April), late spring Philadelphus (May-June peak intensity), summer Lavender and Roses (June-September continuous), evening Sweet Rocket (May-July, scent intensifies at dusk). Colour palette complements scent: dark Yew spirals, purple-blue Lavender, pink Roses, purple-white Hesperis and Viola, white Philadelphus. The spirals' three-dimensional form adds visual complexity whilst remaining visually recessive (dark colour doesn't compete), allowing fragrant flowering plants to provide seasonal variation against permanent evergreen architecture.

Care

ESTABLISHMENT PHASE (First 6-12 Months):

Topiary (English Yew Spirals):

  • Watering: 2-3× weekly during summer (containers dry faster than in-ground). Yew tolerates drought better than most but benefits from consistent moisture first season. Winter: once every 10-14 days in dry weather only.
  • Feeding: Once annually in spring (March-April) with slow-release shrub fertilizer, 50g per container.
  • See Complete Care Guide for comprehensive topiary maintenance. Yew is exceptionally hardy and requires minimal intervention.

Border Plants:

  • Watering: 2-3× weekly during first spring/summer. Roses and Philadelphus (larger shrubs) need consistent deep watering to establish. Water deeply (15-20L per m²) encouraging deep roots. Reduce frequency progressively—by autumn, weekly sufficient.
  • Mulching: Apply 5cm layer of bark mulch or compost after planting. Keep mulch 5cm clear of plant stems. Roses particularly benefit from mulch (retains moisture, suppresses weeds).
  • No feeding required Year 1—planting compost contains nutrients.

ONGOING MAINTENANCE (Year 2 Onwards):

Topiary (English Yew):

  • Water 2-3× weekly in summer, minimal in winter (see Container Care Guide)
  • Feed once annually in spring (slow-release fertilizer, 50g per container)
  • Prune once annually late May-early June (Yew is slow-growing, single annual trim sufficient)
  • See Pruning & Trimming Guide for spiral-specific techniques (maintaining groove definition)

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia 'Vera'):
Drought-tolerant established—water only during extended dry spells (3+ weeks no rain). Minimal feeding (light application balanced fertilizer spring, optional). Trim after flowering (August) removing spent stems plus 2-3cm foliage. Light spring tidy-up (April) removing winter damage. Avoid hard pruning into old wood. Lifespan 8-12 years before replacement.

Rosa 'Gertrude Jekyll' (Climbing Rose):
Weekly deep watering first 2 years, then drought-tolerant. Feed twice annually—spring (March) and after first flush (July) with rose-specific fertilizer. Prune late winter (February-March): remove dead/diseased/crossing stems, reduce main stems by one-third, tie in new growth to supports throughout summer. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage repeat blooming. Annual spring mulch (well-rotted manure/compost). Watch for aphids (May-June), blackspot, powdery mildew—treat promptly.

Philadelphus 'Belle Etoile' (Mock Orange):
Drought-tolerant established. Light spring feed (balanced fertilizer) optional. Prune immediately after flowering (June-July): remove one-third of oldest stems at base to encourage new flowering growth. Flowers on previous year's wood so don't prune in winter/spring. Minimal pest/disease issues. Very low maintenance once established—just post-flowering prune and occasional shape.

Hesperis matronalis (Sweet Rocket):
Biennial/short-lived perennial—typically lives 2-3 years but self-seeds reliably creating continuity. Allow some seed heads to mature (don't deadhead all) for natural regeneration. Water during establishment only—drought-tolerant thereafter. No feeding required. Cut back after flowering if preventing self-seeding; otherwise let nature take course. Seedlings appear spring, flower following year.

Viola odorata (Sweet Violet):
Extremely low maintenance. Thrives in partial shade (under shrubs, around topiary bases). No watering needed after establishment—tolerates dry shade. No feeding required. Remove tatty leaves autumn/spring. Spreads naturally via runners creating ground cover—divide every 3-4 years if becoming too vigorous or to create more plants. Virtually indestructible.

GETTING HELP:

Planting & Positioning

SITE REQUIREMENTS:

Light: Full sun to partial shade. Topiary (Yew) tolerates full sun to moderate shade. Lavender and Roses require full sun (6+ hours daily) for best flowering and fragrance. Philadelphus, Hesperis, and Viola tolerate partial shade. Ideal position receives sun most of day with some afternoon shade protection for Roses in hottest regions.

Soil: Well-drained, moderate fertility. Yew tolerates wide range including chalk and clay (if drainage adequate). Lavender requires excellent drainage—amend heavy clay with grit. Roses prefer rich soil but adapt to most conditions. Hesperis and Viola tolerate typical garden soil.

Space: Minimum 2m width for Starter, 2.5m for Standard, 3.5m for Impactful. Allow 70-80cm clearance from topiary container edge to door frame (see Placement Guide).

POSITIONING LAYOUT:

Step 1: Position Topiary Spirals
Place containers 140-160cm apart (center to center) depending on entrance width. Spirals should be positioned to allow viewing from multiple angles—their three-dimensional helical form benefits from rotational viewing. Ensure containers sit level.

Step 2: Plant Roses
Position 80-120cm behind topiary, against wall/fence/trellis where they can climb. Space 120-150cm apart if planting both (Starter/Standard have 2 plants, Impactful has 2 plants). Install support (trellis, wires) before or immediately after planting. Roses will climb upward creating fragrant backdrop.

Step 3: Plant Philadelphus
Position to one side of entrance (left or right) 100-150cm from topiary. This structural shrub becomes 1.5-2m width at maturity—give it space to develop natural arching habit. Don't crowd against topiary; let it occupy its own ground.

Step 4: Plant Lavender
Position in clusters of 2-3 plants, spacing 60-80cm in front of topiary containers. Within clusters, space individual plants 40-45cm apart. Creates fragrant foreground without obscuring spiral bases.

Step 5: Plant Hesperis (Sweet Rocket)
Scatter throughout mid-ground between Lavender and topiary, or in gaps around Philadelphus. Space 40-50cm apart. Upright habit fills vertical space whilst allowing evening scent to drift. Self-seeds gently—allow some natural spreading for cottage garden effect.

Step 6: Plant Viola (Sweet Violet)
Use as ground cover beneath and around topiary containers, under Philadelphus, or along shaded edges. Space 25-30cm apart. Spreads naturally to create fragrant carpet in areas receiving partial shade.

ESTABLISHMENT CARE (First 6 Months):

Topiary: Water 2-3× weekly during first summer (even established Yew benefits from consistent moisture when newly positioned). Feed once in spring. Yew is exceptionally low-maintenance once established. See Complete Care Guide.

Border Plants: Water 2-3× weekly first growing season until established. Roses and Philadelphus need consistent moisture first year—these are larger plants establishing root systems. Mulch 5cm around all plants (keep clear of stems). No feeding required Year 1.

By 6 months: Starter plants rooted and establishing (30-40% mature size, fragrance developing). Standard plants established with noticeable presence (50-70% mature, good fragrance from Roses/Lavender). Impactful plants quickly established, near-mature fragrance and appearance (70-90% mature, substantial scent from first season).
