What's Included Per Metre

This border creates contemporary cool-toned elegance through architectural plants in restrained silver-blue palette—celebrating form, texture, and sophisticated colour restraint over traditional bright flowering borders. The composition is designed for full sun positions where modern minimalist aesthetics are desired—complementing contemporary architecture, creating clean sculptural boundaries, or establishing monochrome design statements. Steel-blue flowers, silver-grey foliage, and evergreen structure create year-round presence with exceptional drought tolerance once established.

WHAT'S INCLUDED:

Anchor Topiary (choose one option):

Option 1: Cupressus fastigiata Spiral (130-150cm)

  • Tall helical form with 2-3 complete rotations creating dramatic vertical architectural presence, blue-green evergreen foliage, spiral form creates three-dimensional sculptural interest, provides substantial height (130-150cm) creating commanding presence every metre—suitable where tall vertical punctuation desired

Option 2: English Yew Ball (30-40cm)

  • Low-level clipped sphere with deep evergreen foliage, provides ground-level geometric punctuation creating rhythm without height—suitable where lower formal edge desired or where tall topiary would block views

Both options work beautifully with silver-blue companion planting—choose based on desired height and architectural impact. Cupressus creates dramatic vertical statement (modern contemporary), Yew creates restrained horizontal rhythm (understated contemporary). Price adjusts per your selection.

Companion Plant 1: Festuca glauca 'Elijah Blue'

  • Role: Silver-blue grass mounds and textural ground cover
  • Intensely silver-blue evergreen foliage forming tight rounded tussocks 20-30cm height and spread, delicate flower stems early summer (can remove if preferring foliage-only effect), provides year-round silver-blue colour and fine texture contrasting with bold-leaved plants, one of most intensely blue ornamental grasses
  • Quantity: 3 per metre (2L pots)

Companion Plant 2: Agapanthus 'Northern Star'

  • Role: Architectural blue flower globes
  • Deep violet-blue flower globes on tall stems 80-100cm July-August, strap-like grey-green foliage clumps 40-50cm height, deciduous (foliage dies back winter), one of hardiest Agapanthus cultivars (H4 hardiness—survives most UK winters with light mulch protection), provides dramatic blue spherical flowers creating architectural focal points
  • Quantity: 2 per metre (3L pots)

Companion Plant 3: Stachys byzantina 'Big Ears'

  • Role: Bold silver foliage ground cover
  • Extra-large soft silver felted leaves (larger than standard Lamb's Ear—hence 'Big Ears'), evergreen low carpet 15-25cm height spreading 40-60cm, produces pale purple flower spikes June-August (can deadhead if preferring foliage-only), dramatic silver presence particularly effective against dark topiary and blue flowers
  • Quantity: 2 per metre (2L pots)

Companion Plant 4: Perovskia atriplicifolia 'Blue Spire' (Russian Sage)

  • Role: Airy blue flower spikes and silver stems
  • Lavender-blue flower spikes on silvery-white stems July-September, aromatic grey-green foliage, upright airy habit 90-120cm height, subshrub (woody base, herbaceous top growth), exceptional drought tolerance, provides vertical interest without bulk or heaviness—see-through stems allow visual depth
  • Quantity: 1 per metre (3L pot)

HOW THE COMPOSITION WORKS:

Colour palette is deliberately monochrome and contemporary: deep evergreen topiary (blue-green Cupressus or dark green Yew), intensely silver-blue Festuca, deep violet-blue Agapanthus, silver-grey Stachys, lavender-blue Perovskia with silvery-white stems. This restricted cool-toned palette (no warm colours, no bright pink/red/yellow) creates sophisticated restraint—the composition reads as intentional contemporary design rather than traditional mixed border.

Texture is as important as colour in monochrome schemes: smooth spiralling topiary or clipped sphere (geometric, formal), fine tufted Festuca grass (delicate, spiky), bold strap-like Agapanthus leaves and spherical flowers (architectural, sculptural), soft felted Stachys leaves (tactile, low horizontal), airy see-through Perovskia stems (vertical, ethereal). Multiple textures create visual interest where bright colour is deliberately absent.

Seasonal progression ensures interest July-September peak with year-round structure: early summer Festuca puts up delicate flower stems (June, optional—can remove), midsummer Agapanthus dramatic blue globes emerge (July-August peak spectacle), overlapping Perovskia lavender-blue spikes (July-September), Stachys may produce flower spikes (June-August, can deadhead if preferring foliage-only). Outside flowering season (October-June), composition relies on exceptional foliage: evergreen topiary, year-round silver-blue Festuca, silver Stachys, Agapanthus grey-green strap leaves (spring-autumn before dying back winter). This is sophisticated four-season planting—never relying solely on flower power.

SCALABILITY:

Each metre is a complete contemporary unit. When ordering multiple metres:

  • Topiary rhythm: 1 topiary every metre creates architectural colonnade—particularly dramatic with tall Cupressus spirals (130-150cm) creating vertical punctuation, or restrained with low Yew balls creating horizontal rhythm
  • Silver-blue carpet: Festuca and Stachys spread creating continuous silver ground cover between topiary
  • 2-metre order: Intimate contemporary entrance or modern pathway edge
  • 5-metre order: Substantial contemporary border with genuine architectural presence—topiary rhythm registers as intentional design
  • 10+ metre order: Grand contemporary colonnade effect—particularly dramatic with Cupressus spirals creating vertical forest, or elegantly restrained with Yew balls creating minimalist rhythm

The design scales from subtle (2-3m) to commanding (10m+) without losing contemporary sophistication—monochrome restraint ensures elegance at any scale.

Care

ESTABLISHMENT PHASE (First 6-12 Months):

Topiary:

  • Cupressus Spiral: Water 2-3× weekly summer. Drought-tolerant established but needs consistent moisture first season. May need staking first year if exposed position. Feed once spring.
  • Yew Ball: Water 2-3× weekly summer (containers dry faster). Exceptionally hardy and drought-tolerant but appreciates moisture when establishing. Feed once spring.
  • See Complete Care Guide for species-specific topiary maintenance.

Companion Plants:

  • Watering: 2-3× weekly first spring/summer but allow to dry between waterings (these are dry-climate plants, dislike wet). Water deeply encouraging deep roots. Reduce frequency autumn. By Year 2, drought-tolerant requiring minimal supplemental water.
  • Mulching: Use grit/gravel mulch (2-3cm)—NOT organic mulch which retains moisture. Improves drainage and reflects light enhancing silver foliage.
  • No feeding required—these plants evolved in poor soils. Excess fertility reduces silver foliage intensity and causes floppy growth.

ONGOING MAINTENANCE (Year 2 Onwards):

Topiary:

  • Cupressus Spiral: Water 2-3× weekly summer, minimal winter. Feed once annually spring. Prune 1-2× annually maintaining spiral form (specialized pruning—each spiral rotation trimmed individually). See Pruning & Trimming Guide.
  • Yew Ball: Water 2-3× weekly summer, minimal winter. Feed once annually spring. Prune once annually late May-early June (slow-growing, single trim sufficient). See Pruning & Trimming Guide.

Festuca glauca 'Elijah Blue':
Extremely low maintenance. Drought-tolerant—water only extreme drought once established. No feeding required (excess fertility turns foliage green reducing desired blue colour—starve them). Comb out dead foliage spring with fingers or rake. Divide every 3-4 years spring if centres dying out (typical for ornamental grasses). Very few pest/disease issues. Evergreen provides year-round silver-blue colour—key feature of monochrome palette.

Agapanthus 'Northern Star':
Drought-tolerant established—water only during prolonged drought. No feeding required (excess fertility reduces flowering). Deadhead spent flower stems after blooming or leave seed heads for architectural winter interest. Cut back dead foliage to ground late autumn or early spring. Mulch crowns 5-10cm with grit/bark November for winter protection (one of hardiest Agapanthus but benefits from light protection cold regions). Divide clumps every 5-7 years spring if flowering declines or creating more plants. Deciduous—foliage dies back winter completely (don't assume dead).

Stachys byzantina 'Big Ears':
Very low maintenance. Drought-tolerant—avoid overwatering (causes rot). No feeding required. Remove tatty or damaged leaves spring and autumn. Produces flower spikes June-August—deadhead if preferring foliage-only effect (silver leaves are main attraction) or leave for bees. Divide every 3-4 years if spreading too vigorously or to rejuvenate. Evergreen provides year-round silver presence—one of best silver-leaved ground covers.

Perovskia atriplicifolia 'Blue Spire':
Very low maintenance. Drought-tolerant—rarely needs watering established. No feeding required. Cut back hard to 15-30cm from ground each spring (March-April) before new growth starts—encourages strong stems and prevents woodiness. Don't prune autumn (leave stems for winter interest and frost protection for woody base). Virtually pest/disease-free. Subshrub—woody base persists, herbaceous top dies back winter. Silvery-white stems and lavender-blue flowers provide ethereal summer display with zero fuss.

CONTEMPORARY BORDER MAINTENANCE PHILOSOPHY:

This bundle requires minimal intervention once established—these are drought-tolerant low-maintenance plants thriving on neglect. Key principles:

  • Avoid overwatering (more plants killed by kindness than drought)
  • Never feed (reduces silver foliage intensity and flowering)
  • Minimal deadheading (architectural seed heads often more attractive than flowers)
  • Topiary trimming maintains discipline (without it, border would lack structure)
  • Embrace minimalism—less is more with contemporary planting

Reward: year-round sophisticated silver-blue presence, exceptional drought tolerance, minimal water/maintenance requirements, contemporary elegance aging gracefully with minimal intervention.

GETTING HELP:

Planting & Positioning

SITE REQUIREMENTS:

Light: Full sun essential. All plants in this bundle are sun-lovers requiring maximum light (6+ hours daily minimum). Topiary (Cupressus or Yew) tolerates partial shade but border plants need full sun for best silver-blue foliage colour and flowering. Agapanthus particularly needs full sun for reliable flowering. This bundle is ideal for hot sunny exposed positions—these species thrive in heat and intense light.

Soil: Well-drained essential, average to poor fertility. These are Mediterranean/dry-climate plants requiring excellent drainage—avoid waterlogged positions or heavy clay without amendment. Festuca, Perovskia, and Stachys particularly intolerant of winter wet (causes rot). Agapanthus needs good drainage but tolerates richer soil than others. Amend heavy soils with grit/sharp sand (at least 30% by volume) before planting. Neutral to slightly alkaline pH ideal (6.5-7.5) but plants tolerate 6.0-8.0 range.

Space: 1m length × 0.6m depth per unit minimum. Can extend depth to 0.8m if desired (allows more generous spacing for Perovskia height). Border should have clean contemporary edge (crisp paving, steel edging, concrete)—contemporary aesthetic requires precise boundary definition.

POSITIONING WITHIN EACH METRE:

Step 1: Position Topiary

If using Cupressus Spiral: Place centrally within 1m width, positioned 15-20cm from back edge. Tall spiral (130-150cm) dominates composition—ensure stable positioning (may need staking first year if exposed position). Spiral form creates dramatic vertical presence.

If using Yew Ball: Place centrally within 1m width, positioned 20-30cm from back edge. Ball (30-40cm) sits lower creating ground-level geometric anchor. Container sits on surface or partially sunken.

Step 2: Plant Festuca (Blue Fescue)
Position 3 Festuca plants throughout front and mid-ground creating silver-blue carpet. Space 30-35cm apart (tight spacing creates cohesive effect faster—essential for visual impact). Plant in groups/drifts rather than single scattered specimens—silver-blue colour needs mass to register effectively. Front edge or slightly behind (10-15cm from edge).

Step 3: Plant Agapanthus
Position 2 Agapanthus plants prominently where tall flower stems (80-100cm) will be clearly visible and appreciated. Space 60-80cm apart (need room for clump development and tall flower stems). Mid-ground positioning—don't hide behind other plants. Position where dramatic blue globes will create focal points July-August.

Step 4: Plant Stachys 'Big Ears'
Position 2 Stachys plants at front edge or throughout front third creating silver ground-level presence. Space 40-50cm apart (spreads to 40-60cm—will create continuous silver carpet within season). Bold silver leaves (larger than standard Lamb's Ear) provide dramatic ground-level impact—position where this will be visible.

Step 5: Plant Perovskia (Russian Sage)
Position 1 Perovskia plant in mid-ground between topiary and front plants. Upright airy habit (90-120cm) provides vertical presence without density or heaviness. Silvery-white stems with lavender-blue flowers create ethereal effect—see-through habit means won't block views. Position where backlit by sun if possible (stunning when sunlight shines through stems).

REPEATING FOR MULTIPLE METRES:

Continuous borders (2m+):

  • Topiary positioned at precise 1m intervals creating architectural rhythm (regularity essential for contemporary effect—avoid irregular spacing)
  • Festuca positioned to create continuous silver-blue carpet—plant across metre boundaries, don't create hard divisions between units
  • Stachys spreads naturally between units creating silver ground cover within first season
  • Agapanthus positioned consistently but can vary slightly (alternate left/right of topiary) creating balanced distribution
  • Perovskia positioned consistently in each metre maintaining vertical rhythm

Contemporary corners:

  • Measure each straight section separately
  • At corner, maintain 1m spacing rhythm (don't crowd corner with extra topiary—disrupts rhythm)
