Details

This bundle creates a luminous evening garden where white flowers emerge from twilight. Portuguese Laurel lollipops provide glossy evergreen structure whilst surrounding plants deliver waves of white blooms from late spring through autumn—Hydrangea's dramatic spheres, Astrantia's intricate stars, Geranium's delicate cups, Foxglove's towering spires. Silver Stachys foliage reflects moonlight and captures dusk. This composition is designed for evening appreciation: white flowers glow as light fades, transforming the entrance into nocturnal theater.

WHAT'S INCLUDED:

Topiary Anchor:

  • 2× Portuguese Laurel Lollipop Trees (Ligustrum jonandrum)
  • Clear stem: 80-100cm height, 10-12cm girth (substantial mature stems)
  • Ball canopy: 40-50cm diameter, dense glossy evergreen foliage
  • Dark green leaves with natural sheen, fast-growing responsive to clipping, containerized and ready to position

Border Plants (quantity and size vary by variant):

Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle' (Smooth Hydrangea)

  • Role: Structural shrub with dramatic white blooms
  • Massive white flower heads 20-30cm diameter June-September, flowers emerge lime-green maturing to pure white then aging to pale green, deciduous rounded habit 1-1.5m height and spread, flowers on current year's growth (reliable annual display).
  • Quantity: 2 plants (Starter - 2L), 2 plants (Standard - 3L), 3 plants (Impactful - 5L)

Astrantia major 'White Giant' (Great Masterwort)

  • Role: Mid-border texture and extended flowering
  • Intricate white star-shaped flowers with pale green bracts June-September, long flowering season, attractive seed heads persist autumn, clump-forming habit 60-75cm height, tolerates partial shade, excellent cut flower.
  • Quantity: 3 plants (Starter - 1L), 5 plants (Standard - 2L), 8 plants (Impactful - 2L)

Geranium sanguineum 'Album' (Bloody Cranesbill - White Form)

  • Role: Ground cover with delicate white flowers
  • Pure white cup-shaped flowers May-September (exceptionally long flowering period), low mounding habit 20-30cm height spreading to 40-50cm, semi-evergreen foliage (persists through mild winters), excellent weed-suppressing ground cover once established.
  • Quantity: 3 plants (Starter - P9 plug), 5 plants (Standard - 2L), 9 plants (Impactful - 2L)

Stachys byzantina (Lamb's Ear - Standard Form)

  • Role: Silver foliage contrast and texture
  • Soft silver-grey felted leaves, produces pale purple flower spikes June-August (can deadhead if preferring foliage-only effect), evergreen low carpet 15-25cm height spreading to 40-60cm, excellent textural contrast to white flowers and dark topiary.
  • Quantity: 2 plants (Starter - P9 plug), 4 plants (Standard - 1L), 7 plants (Impactful - 1L)

Digitalis purpurea 'Camelot White' (White Foxglove)

  • Role: Vertical drama and cottage garden charm
  • Pure white tubular flowers on tall spires 100-120cm June-July, biennial (flowers second year from seed, self-seeds for continuity), classic cottage garden vertical accent, tolerates partial shade, attracts bees, adds height without bulk.
  • Quantity: 2 plants (Starter - P9 plug), 4 plants (Standard - 1L), 7 plants (Impactful - 1L)

COVERAGE & DESIGN:

  • Starter (5-7m²): Foundation white garden for entrance widths 2-2.5m. Topiary provides immediate glossy structure, white-flowering plants establish over 12-18 months creating luminous evening composition as they mature and flower quantities increase.
  • Standard (7-9m²): Balanced white composition for entrance widths 2.5-3.5m. Larger plant sizes (particularly Hydrangea in 3L) deliver more substantial flower impact from first season. Establishes cohesive white garden within 8-12 months with good flower coverage.
  • Impactful (9-12m²): Commanding white garden for entrance widths 3.5m+. Feature shrubs (Hydrangea in 5L are mature specimens, 3 plants instead of 2) create dramatic flower presence immediately. Increased quantities of white perennials and ground covers create continuous white carpet through borders. Near-mature appearance within 6-9 months.

Colour palette is deliberately monochrome with silver accents: glossy dark green topiary, pure white flowers (all species), silver-grey Stachys foliage, lime-green (Hydrangea buds and aging flowers, Astrantia bracts). This restraint creates sophisticated unity—the composition reads as intentional design rather than random planting. White flowers luminescence at dusk: as ambient light fades, white blooms appear to glow whilst colored flowers disappear into darkness. This makes the entrance most dramatic during evening hours—arrival home at dusk reveals the composition at peak beauty. Flowering progression ensures continuous white from late spring through autumn: Geranium starts May, Foxglove peaks June-July, Hydrangea and Astrantia July-September, with overlapping periods creating unbroken white presence.

Delivery

Care

ESTABLISHMENT PHASE (First 6-12 Months):

Topiary (Portuguese Laurel Lollipops):

  • Watering: 2-3× weekly during summer (Portuguese Laurel grows vigorously and needs consistent moisture in containers). Check moisture before watering. Winter: once every 10-14 days in dry weather only.
  • Feeding: Once annually in spring (March-April) with slow-release shrub fertilizer, 50g per container. Portuguese Laurel is fast-growing and responds well to feeding.
  • See Complete Care Guide for comprehensive topiary maintenance including winter protection (Laurel hardy -12 to -15°C, may need fleece in severe frost).

Border Plants:

  • Watering: 2-3× weekly during first spring/summer. Hydrangea needs consistent moisture—never allow to wilt (wilting stresses plant and reduces flowering). Water deeply (15-20L per m²) encouraging deep roots. Reduce frequency progressively through autumn.
  • Mulching: Apply 5cm layer bark mulch or compost after planting. Essential for Hydrangea (moisture retention). Keep mulch 5cm clear of plant stems.
  • No feeding required Year 1—planting compost contains nutrients.

ONGOING MAINTENANCE (Year 2 Onwards):

Topiary (Portuguese Laurel):

  • Water 2-3× weekly in summer, minimal in winter (see Container Care Guide)
  • Feed once annually in spring (slow-release fertilizer, 50g per container)
  • Prune 2-3× annually May-August (fast-growing species needs frequent trimming for tight canopy)
  • See Pruning & Trimming Guide for lollipop maintenance

Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle':
Simple maintenance—flowers on current year's growth so prune hard. Late winter/early spring (February-March) cut all stems to 15-30cm from ground. This encourages strong new growth with large flower heads. Water weekly during growing season (particularly during flowering). Feed spring and midsummer with balanced fertilizer. Mulch annually spring. Very few pest/disease issues. One of easiest Hydrangeas to maintain.

Astrantia major 'White Giant':
Very low maintenance. Drought-tolerant once established though prefers consistent moisture for best flowering. Light spring feed (balanced fertilizer). Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continued blooming or leave seed heads for autumn interest. Divide clumps every 4-5 years in spring if becoming congested (or leave undivided—tolerates crowding). Cut back foliage to ground level late autumn or early spring.

Geranium sanguineum 'Album':
Extremely low maintenance. Drought-tolerant established. No feeding required. Shear back lightly after main flush of flowering (midsummer) to encourage second wave and neaten foliage. Cut back to ground level late autumn or leave semi-evergreen foliage through winter (provides some ground cover). Virtually pest/disease-free. One of most reliable hardy geraniums.

Stachys byzantina (Lamb's Ear):
Very low maintenance. Drought-tolerant—avoid overwatering (causes rot). No feeding required. Remove tatty or damaged leaves spring and autumn. Produces flower spikes June-August—deadhead if preferring foliage-only effect, or leave for bees. Divide every 3-4 years if spreading too vigorously or to rejuvenate clumps. Extremely reliable.

Digitalis purpurea 'Camelot White' (White Foxglove):
Biennial habit: plant Year 1, flowers Year 2, then dies (but self-seeds). Allow some seed heads to mature (don't deadhead all) for natural regeneration—seedlings appear autumn/spring, flower following year, creating continuous presence. Water during establishment only. No feeding required. Remove spent flower spikes after blooming unless saving seed. Seedlings can be thinned or transplanted to desired positions spring.

Planting & Positioning

SITE REQUIREMENTS:

Light: Full sun to partial shade. Topiary (Portuguese Laurel) thrives full sun but tolerates partial shade. Hydrangea and Astrantia actually prefer some afternoon shade (prevents flower scorch in hot summers). Geranium, Stachys, and Foxglove tolerate sun to partial shade. This bundle is particularly suitable for positions receiving morning sun and afternoon shade.

Soil: Well-drained, moderate to rich fertility. Hydrangea prefers consistent moisture and rich soil. Astrantia tolerates wide range including clay if not waterlogged. Geranium, Stachys, and Foxglove adapt to typical garden soil. Amend with compost before planting to improve moisture retention and fertility.

Space: Minimum 2m width for Starter, 2.5m for Standard, 3.5m for Impactful. Allow 70-80cm clearance from topiary container edge to door frame (see Placement Guide).

POSITIONING LAYOUT:

Step 1: Position Topiary Lollipops
Place containers 120-150cm apart (center to center) depending on entrance width. Elevated glossy canopies should be clearly visible and catch light. Ensure containers sit level on stable surface.

Step 2: Plant Hydrangea
Position to sides or behind topiary, 80-120cm from containers. Space 100-120cm apart if planting multiple (Standard/Impactful have 2-3 plants). These become 1-1.5m width shrubs—give them space to develop. Don't crowd against topiary; Hydrangea needs room for its rounded habit and massive flower heads.

Step 3: Plant Astrantia
Position throughout mid-ground between topiary and front edge, or around Hydrangea bases. Space 40-50cm apart. Clump-forming habit doesn't spread aggressively—plant where you want permanent white flower presence mid-border.

Step 4: Plant Geranium (White Cranesbill)
Use as ground cover in front of and around topiary containers. Space 35-40cm apart. Spreads to create weed-suppressing carpet with continuous white flowers—excellent for filling larger ground areas in Impactful variant.

Step 5: Plant Stachys (Lamb's Ear)
Position as edging along front of planting or scattered throughout for silver accent. Space 30-40cm apart. Silver foliage provides textural contrast and reflective quality that enhances white flowers, particularly effective at dusk when silver catches remaining light.

Step 6: Plant Digitalis (White Foxglove)
Scatter throughout mid-ground or back areas—vertical spires add height without bulk. Space 40-50cm apart. Biennial habit means they flower Year 2, but self-seed for continuity. Plant young plants (P9 or 1L) in spring for flowering following summer.

ESTABLISHMENT CARE (First 6 Months):

Topiary: Water 2-3× weekly during first summer. Portuguese Laurel is vigorous and benefits from consistent moisture. Feed once in spring. See Complete Care Guide for full maintenance.

Border Plants: Water 2-3× weekly first growing season. Hydrangea particularly needs consistent moisture—never allow to wilt. Mulch 5cm around all plants (keep clear of stems). Mulch especially important for Hydrangea (retains moisture). No feeding required Year 1.

By 6 months: Starter plants rooted and establishing (30-40% mature size, limited flowering first season except Geranium). Standard plants established with noticeable presence (50-70% mature, good flowering from Hydrangea/Astrantia/Geranium). Impactful plants quickly established with near-mature flower display (70-90% mature, substantial white presence from first season).
