Details

This bundle creates a woodland-inspired entrance for shaded positions where most plants struggle. English Yew balls provide evergreen structure whilst shade-loving perennials deliver delicate flowers and textured foliage—Astilbe's feathery plumes, Brunnera's forget-me-not flowers and bold leaves, Tiarella's foamy sprays, Dryopteris ferns' architectural fronds, Helleborus' winter-blooming elegance. This is sophisticated shade gardening: lush, layered, thriving in conditions that challenge sun-loving plants.

WHAT'S INCLUDED:

Topiary Anchor:

  • 2× English Yew Ball Topiary (Taxus baccata)
  • Diameter: 50-60cm (identical across all variants—topiary size doesn't vary)
  • Mature clipped spheres, dense evergreen foliage, 7-10 years old
  • Deep green year-round, exceptionally shade-tolerant (one of few topiary species thriving in shade), containerized and ready to position

Border Plants (quantity and size vary by variant):

Astilbe 'Deutschland' (False Spirea)

  • Role: Mid-border structure and vertical flower spikes
  • Pure white feathery flower plumes June-July rising 50-60cm above foliage, glossy dark green divided foliage creating 40cm mounds, shade-loving (actually prefers partial shade to full sun), moisture-loving but tolerates typical garden conditions once established, provides architectural presence in shade.
  • Quantity: 2 plants (Starter - 1L), 4 plants (Standard - 2L), 7 plants (Impactful - 2L)

Brunnera macrophylla 'Jack Frost' (Siberian Bugloss)

  • Role: Bold foliage and spring flowers
  • Delicate blue forget-me-not flowers April-May, striking silver-frosted heart-shaped leaves with green veining (foliage remains attractive all season after flowering), clump-forming 30-40cm height and spread, shade-loving (one of best silver-leaved plants for shade), RHS Award of Garden Merit.
  • Quantity: 2 plants (Starter - 1L), 4 plants (Standard - 2L), 7 plants (Impactful - 2L)

Tiarella 'Spring Symphony' (Foam Flower)

  • Role: Ground cover with delicate spring flowers
  • Creamy-white foamy flower spikes April-June, attractive lobed semi-evergreen foliage (bronze-tinted in winter), spreading ground cover 20-30cm height, shade-loving (actually prefers shade to sun), tolerates dry shade once established (rare trait), excellent weed-suppressing ground cover.
  • Quantity: 3 plants (Starter - P9 plug), 5 plants (Standard - 1L), 9 plants (Impactful - 1L)

Dryopteris filix-mas (Male Fern)

  • Role: Architectural foliage and woodland authenticity
  • Classic woodland fern with tall arching fronds 60-90cm, fresh green spring emergence (fiddleheads unfurling—one of spring's great garden moments), semi-evergreen in mild winters (fronds persist through winter then replaced by fresh growth spring), native British fern thriving in shade, provides authentic woodland character.
  • Quantity: 2 plants (Starter - 1L), 3 plants (Standard - 2L), 4 plants (Impactful - 3L)

Helleborus × hybridus 'White Lady' (Lenten Rose)

  • Role: Winter-spring flowering and evergreen structure
  • Pure white bowl-shaped flowers January-April (winter-blooming—flowers when little else does), evergreen leathery foliage providing year-round structure, clump-forming 40-50cm height and spread, shade-loving (one of few plants flowering well in shade), extremely long-lived (decades with minimal care).
  • Quantity: 3 plants (Starter - 1L), 4 plants (Standard - 2L), 7 plants (Impactful - 2L)

COVERAGE & DESIGN:
  • Starter (5-7m²): Foundation woodland planting for shaded entrance widths 2-2.5m. Topiary provides immediate evergreen structure, shade perennials establish over 12-18 months creating increasingly lush layered woodland effect as foliage fills out.
  • Standard (7-9m²): Balanced woodland composition for entrance widths 2.5-3.5m. Larger plant sizes deliver fuller foliage presence and better flowering from first season. Increased quantities create more cohesive woodland layering. Establishes lush shade garden within 8-12 months.
  • Impactful (9-12m²): Abundant woodland garden for entrance widths 3.5m+. Higher plant quantities (particularly Astilbe 7 plants, Brunnera 7 plants, Tiarella 9 plants, Helleborus 7 plants) create genuinely lush woodland understory effect. Larger ferns (3L Dryopteris) provide immediate architectural presence. Near-mature woodland appearance within 6-9 months.

Colour palette is deliberately naturalistic and shade-appropriate: deep green Yew, white flowers (Astilbe, Tiarella, Helleborus), blue Brunnera, fresh green fern fronds, silver-frosted Brunnera foliage. This mirrors woodland edge environments where shade limits bright colors—the composition works with shade rather than fighting it. Flowering progression unusually extends into winter and early spring (when most bundles are dormant): Helleborus January-April, Brunnera April-May overlapping, Tiarella April-June, Astilbe June-July. By high summer when sun-loving bundles peak, this woodland composition transitions to foliage-focused display—but the foliage is exceptional: silver-frosted Brunnera leaves, glossy Astilbe foliage, fresh fern fronds, evergreen Helleborus creating lush green layers. Texture is as important as color in shade: feathery Astilbe plumes, bold heart-shaped Brunnera leaves, delicate Tiarella foamy flowers, architectural fern fronds, substantial Helleborus bowls—multiple textures creating visual interest where bright color is limited.

Delivery

Every bundle is dispatched in upright pallet courier in containers. You'll receive pre-dispatch photos of your exact topiary pair and bundle for approval before shipping. Most orders dispatch within 2-3 weeks depending on season and location. Free UK mainland delivery included.

Care

ESTABLISHMENT PHASE (First 6-12 Months):

Topiary (English Yew Balls):

  • Watering: 2-3× weekly during summer (even in shade, containers need watering—rain doesn't always reach shaded positions). Check moisture regularly. Winter: once every 10-14 days in dry weather only.
  • Feeding: Once annually in spring (March-April) with slow-release shrub fertilizer, 50g per container.
  • See Complete Care Guide. Yew is exceptionally hardy and thrives in shade.

Border Plants:

  • Watering: 2-3× weekly during first spring/summer. Shade doesn't mean wet—often means dry due to tree roots and rain shadow. Water consistently first season. Check moisture regularly—dry shade is common problem.
  • Mulching: Generous mulching essential in shade (7-10cm leaf mold or bark). Retains moisture, suppresses weeds, adds organic matter as it breaks down. Replenish annually spring.
  • No feeding required Year 1—planting compost contains nutrients. From Year 2, light spring feed benefits flowering.

ONGOING MAINTENANCE (Year 2 Onwards):

Topiary (English Yew):

  • Water 2-3× weekly in summer (check moisture—shade positions often drier than expected)
  • Feed once annually in spring (slow-release fertilizer, 50g per container)
  • Prune once annually late May-early June (Yew slow-growing, single trim sufficient)
  • See Pruning & Trimming Guide for ball shaping techniques

Astilbe 'Deutschland':
Moderate moisture needs—water during dry spells (doesn't tolerate drought as well as some shade perennials). Feed spring with balanced fertilizer (supports vigorous flowering). Deadhead spent flower plumes or leave for autumn structure. Cut back all foliage to ground late autumn or early spring. Divide clumps every 4-5 years spring if becoming congested or flowering declines. Relatively pest/disease-free. Thrives in shade with consistent moisture.

Brunnera macrophylla 'Jack Frost':
Low maintenance. Tolerates dry shade once established (unusual for silver-leaved plant). No feeding required. Remove any all-green leaves immediately (variegated plants occasionally revert—remove reverted growth to maintain silver foliage). Deadhead spent flowers if desired though foliage is main attraction. Cut back tatty foliage late autumn or leave semi-evergreen through winter. Divide every 5-7 years spring if spreading too far or to create more plants. Slug-resistant (thick leaves).

Tiarella 'Spring Symphony':
Very low maintenance. Tolerates dry shade established (one of best ground covers for difficult shade). No feeding required. Deadhead spent flowers if desired. Tidy foliage spring removing winter-damaged leaves. Divide every 4-5 years spring if spreading too vigorously or to rejuvenate. Virtually pest/disease-free. Semi-evergreen provides year-round ground cover in mild winters.

Dryopteris filix-mas (Male Fern):
Extremely low maintenance. Tolerates dry shade once established (native British fern adapted to woodland conditions). No feeding required. Remove old fronds spring as new fiddleheads emerge (old fronds turn brown—cut to ground level making way for fresh growth). Divide every 7-10 years spring only if becoming very congested (rarely necessary—long-lived without disturbance). Virtually pest/disease-free. Semi-deciduous—fronds persist through mild winters.

Helleborus × hybridus 'White Lady':
Low maintenance. Drought-tolerant shade established (deep roots access moisture). Light spring feed (balanced fertilizer) after flowering. Remove old tatty leaves late winter (January-February) just before flowers emerge—makes flowers more visible, improves appearance. Deadhead spent flowers if preventing self-seeding (though seedlings take 3-4 years to flower so not aggressive). Never disturbs established plants (dislikes root disturbance—extremely long-lived undisturbed). Watch for aphids on flower buds winter (spray off with water). Evergreen year-round structure.

Planting & Positioning

SITE REQUIREMENTS:

Light: Partial shade to full shade. This bundle is specifically designed for shaded positions (north-facing walls, beneath tree canopies, overshadowed by neighbouring buildings). Topiary (Yew) is one of few species thriving in shade. All border plants prefer shade to sun—they'll tolerate some morning sun but suffer in hot afternoon sun.

Soil: Moisture-retentive but well-drained, rich in organic matter. Shade typically means tree root competition and dry soil—amend generously with compost/leaf mold before planting (at least 30% by volume) to improve moisture retention and fertility. Astilbe particularly needs consistent moisture. Avoid waterlogged positions (Helleborus dislikes winter wet).

Space: Minimum 2m width for Starter, 2.5m for Standard, 3.5m for Impactful. Allow 70-80cm clearance from topiary container edge to door frame (see Placement Guide).

POSITIONING LAYOUT:

Step 1: Position Topiary Balls
Place containers 120-140cm apart (center to center) depending on entrance width. Yew balls provide evergreen structure anchoring the composition—essential in shade where evergreen options are limited. Ensure containers sit level.

Step 2: Plant Dryopteris Ferns
Position behind or to sides of topiary where tall fronds (60-90cm) can rise without obscuring topiary. Space 60-80cm apart (fronds arch gracefully—needs space). Provides woodland authenticity and architectural height.

Step 3: Plant Astilbe
Position in mid-ground where flower plumes will be visible. Space 45-50cm apart. Clumps expand gradually—this spacing allows development without overcrowding. Needs positions where soil remains reasonably moist (avoid driest spots if under tree canopy).

Step 4: Plant Brunnera
Scatter throughout mid-ground. Space 40-50cm apart. Bold silver-frosted leaves provide ground-level focal points—position where foliage will be appreciated (not hidden behind other plants). Spreads slowly forming substantial clumps.

Step 5: Plant Helleborus
Position where winter-spring flowers will be visible from house windows (flowers January-April when viewing from windows more common than garden visits). Space 50-60cm apart. Evergreen foliage provides year-round structure—use strategically.

Step 6: Plant Tiarella (Foam Flower)
Use as ground cover beneath and around other plants. Space 30-35cm apart. Spreads to create weed-suppressing carpet—particularly effective under ferns and around topiary bases where other ground covers struggle in shade.

ESTABLISHMENT CARE (First 6 Months):

Topiary: Water 2-3× weekly during first summer. Even shade-tolerant Yew benefits from consistent moisture when newly positioned. Feed once in spring. See Complete Care Guide.

Border Plants: Water 2-3× weekly first growing season. Shade plants still need moisture—common myth that shade means wet (often means dry due to tree root competition and rain shadow from buildings). Mulch generously 7-10cm with leaf mold or bark (helps retain moisture in typically dry shade). No feeding Year 1.

By 6 months: Starter plants rooted and establishing (30-40% mature, woodland layering developing). Standard plants established with good foliage presence (50-70% mature, lush appearance developing). Impactful plants quickly established with genuine woodland understory effect (70-90% mature, substantial lush presence from first season).
