Watering

Water when the top 2–3cm of compost becomes dry. Japanese Holly prefers steady moisture but dislikes sitting in waterlogged compost. In summer, check 2–3 times weekly; in winter, reduce significantly. Water at the base to keep foliage clean and reduce fungal risk.

Feeding

Feed once in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer. A light midsummer feed supports leaf colour and density. Avoid overfeeding — too much nitrogen encourages leggy growth and reduces shape definition.

Pruning

To maintain crisp cube edges, trim lightly every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (May–September). Use sharp shears for clean lines. Clip only young green growth; avoid cutting into older wood. Regular small trims encourage exceptional density and long-term shape clarity.

Winter Care

Fully hardy to –20°C. Japanese Holly tolerates exposed positions well. Foliage may darken slightly in severe cold but returns to fresh green in spring. Ensure containers drain freely during winter to prevent root stress.

Repotting

Repot every 2–3 years in early spring. Choose a container only slightly larger — cubes benefit from moderate root restriction to maintain tight growth. Use a free-draining mix: loam-based compost with added grit or bark. Light root pruning helps maintain long-term vigour.
