Details

Meet Kiri & Suki

Kiri and Suki may be small, but they are strong. In ancient Japanese gardens, trees like these stood beside gates — welcoming kind souls and keeping bad luck away. They were never in a rush. Each leaf grew slowly, shaped by steady hands and quiet mornings. They don’t try to stand out. Instead, they bring a soft kind of peace — the kind you feel without even knowing why.

Ilex crenata ‘Kinme’ is valued for its miniature scale, dark evergreen foliage, and bright golden new growth that glows softly in morning light. Unlike traditional holly, Kinme is non-spiny and naturally compact, maintaining its form with minimal intervention. Mature specimens develop expressive trunks and a quiet sense of age — qualities impossible to fake or accelerate.

Each bonsai is trained over 8–10 years, using thoughtful cloud-pruning techniques to create layered canopies that sit lightly above the stems. The shaping process favours patience over force: gentle structural wiring, small seasonal cuts, and an understanding of how the plant wishes to grow. The result is a pair with quiet presence — elegant, balanced, and deeply calming.

Placement Suggestions
  • Garden gate guardians
Honour traditional placement. Their modest height suits narrower pathways while their symbolic meaning brings warmth and welcome.
  • Terrace or patio sentinels
Frame seating areas or anchor corners. Their structured canopies provide definition without blocking sightlines or overwhelming small spaces.
  • Courtyard focal points
Perfect for intimate gardens. The layered foliage brings depth and texture, while the evergreen form provides calm visual stability all year.

Delivery

Each TopiaryTwins pair comes with a minted digital certificate — confirming your ownership, care timeline, and pruning calendar. It’s a modern take on legacy gardening: part receipt, part record, part pride.”

Care

Care & Maintenance

Overall care level: Low to moderate — regular watering and a few seasonal trims are all they need.

Watering

Water when the top 1–2cm of compost feels dry. Kinme prefers consistent moisture but tolerates brief drying better than waterlogging. In summer, check daily; in winter, weekly checks are sufficient. Water thoroughly at the base and allow excess to drain — avoiding standing water protects the fine feeder roots that define bonsai health.

Feeding

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring (March). Because Kinme is naturally slow-growing, avoid heavy feeding that encourages soft, leggy growth. A single application is usually enough. Organic feeds such as fish, blood and bone support steady colour and healthy root development. Do not feed from October through February.

Pruning

Cloud-pruned bonsai thrive with light maintenance 3–4 times per year. Trim new growth back to the established cloud layers, removing 2–3cm where needed to maintain definition. Spring (April–May) and late summer (August) are ideal moments. Pruning is minimal — the aim is to refine the silhouette, not reshape it.

Winter Care

Fully hardy to –20°C. No winter protection is required in the UK. Foliage may darken slightly in prolonged cold; fresh spring growth restores colour. Reduce watering during winter and avoid feeding. Ensure containers are lifted on pot feet to prevent freezing damage from standing water.

Repotting

Repot every 3–4 years, ideally in early spring before new growth begins. Use a free-draining bonsai mix — typically Akadama, pumice, and composted bark (50:25:25). Trim circling roots lightly, removing no more than one-third of the root mass. Mature bonsai may only require top-dressing with fresh compost.

Botanical Specifications

Each pair is selected by hand, compared side by side for trunk character, canopy structure, cloud-layer definition, and overall balance. Bonsai matching is not about identical clones — it’s about harmony. We look for pairs whose movement, density, and proportions complement one another, creating a natural companionship rather than manufactured symmetry.

Measurements
  • Trunk Height: 15–25cm — expressive single-stem base that create depth
  • Canopy Spreads: 30–40cm — multi cloud layers, hand-shaped for definition
  • Overall Height: 70–90cm (not including pot)
  • Container: Standard nursery pot, approx 45cm diametre
