Scale Insects on Garden Plants: Identification and Treatment

You run your thumb along the underside of a bay leaf and feel small, smooth, limpet-shaped bumps. They look like part of the plant. They scrape off when you push hard, leaving a sticky residue behind. That is scale — and you have probably had it for months.

Scale insects are one of the easiest pests to overlook because they do not move. They sit, feed, and look almost like a natural part of the stem. Left alone they slowly weaken the plant, drop sticky honeydew everywhere, and trigger the black sooty mould that follows.

Here is how to identify them properly, why they are stubborn to treat, and what actually works on a structural evergreen.

The short version: Scale insects are small fixed bumps under a wax shell on stems and leaf undersides - brown scale on bay and viburnum, cushion scale on camellia and holly. Adults can't be sprayed through; only the mobile crawler stage in June and July responds to treatment. Wipe small infestations off by hand with weak soapy water, or use horticultural oil or a timed contact spray on larger ones, plus pruning out bad stems. Expect two summers to fully clear it.

What scale actually looks like

There are several scale species common in UK gardens, but they all share the same basic look: small fixed bumps on stems or the undersides of leaves, usually brown or tan, sometimes almost the colour of the bark. The two most likely to turn up are brown scale (Parthenolecanium corni) on bay, magnolia, viburnum and ornamental cherries, and cushion scale (Pulvinaria floccifera) on camellia and holly, which leaves white waxy egg-cases attached to the leaf veins.

What you are looking at is an adult female under a protective wax shell. She does not move once settled. Underneath she feeds on plant sap and produces hundreds of eggs that hatch into mobile "crawlers" in early summer. Those crawlers move a few inches, settle, build their own shells, and the cycle repeats.

Why it matters: Adult scales are almost impossible to spray through because their wax shell protects them. The crawler stage in June and July is the only window when most treatments actually work. Time it wrong and you waste the application.

The sticky leaves and black mould

Scale insects excrete a sugary liquid called honeydew as they feed. It drips down onto lower leaves, stems and anything underneath — paving, garden furniture, the car parked in the wrong place. A black mould called sooty mould then grows on the honeydew. The mould itself is not damaging, but it blocks sunlight, makes the plant look unwell, and is the most visible sign that there is a sap-sucker overhead.

Once the scale is cleared, the mould washes off in the next few good rains, or you can sponge it off with mild soapy water on prized plants. If the mould keeps reappearing, the pest is still there even if you cannot see it.

How to clear an infestation

Small, contained infestations on a single plant can be cleared by hand without any spray. Use a soft cloth or old toothbrush dipped in a weak solution of horticultural soap or diluted washing-up liquid, and wipe each visible scale off the stems and leaf undersides. Tedious, but it works, and on a single bay tree or small camellia it is the kindest option for the rest of the garden.

Hand removal. Best for small plants and single-stem infestations. Wipe scales off with a soft cloth and weak soapy water. Repeat every fortnight through summer.

Horticultural oil spray. Suffocates adults under their shells. Best applied during warm weather in mid-summer when crawlers are also active. Avoid in full sun and during flowering.

Contact spray on crawlers. Time applications for June or early July when crawlers are mobile and unprotected. A second spray two weeks later catches stragglers.

Prune out heavily affected stems. On a small plant, simply removing the worst-affected branches in spring resets the infestation and lets new growth come through clean.

Scale rarely clears in a single season. Expect to repeat the treatment for two summers running to break the breeding cycle. Once gone, regular inspections in May and June catch any reappearance before it has time to build.

Why some plants get hit and others don't

Scale loves still, warm, sheltered positions — exactly the spots a bay tree or camellia tends to end up in. Plants stressed by drought or pot-bound roots are more vulnerable, because their sap chemistry changes in ways that scale finds easier to digest. Repotting tight rootballs, mulching to retain moisture, and easing back overuse of high-nitrogen feed all help reduce the conditions scale prefers.

Ladybird larvae and parasitic wasps prey on scale crawlers, which is another reason it pays not to spray broadly. A garden with a small patch of flowering plants nearby will lose far fewer scale crawlers to the next generation than one that has been kept rigorously clean.
