What's Included Per Metre

This collection creates vertical sentinel planting through graduated cone heights—celebrating upward-reaching form and evergreen permanence. The composition is designed for positions where boundary definition or vertical structure is desired—boundary planting, formal garden divisions, creating evergreen backbone, or establishing year-round vertical presence. Ten cones in three graduated heights create rhythmic progression from tall commanding sentinels through medium supporting rhythm to small foreground accents—this is architectural vertical planting: cones as natural obelisks, evergreen structure providing winter interest, formal geometry creating order and enclosure.

WHAT'S INCLUDED:

Main Rhythm (4 cones):

  • 4× Tall Cones (130-150cm height)
  • Species: English Yew (Taxus baccata) OR Ilex Crenata (Japanese Holly) - your choice at checkout
  • Large conical forms creating commanding vertical presence, mature specimens 10-15 years old, base diameter 60-80cm tapering to pointed apex, deep evergreen foliage year-round, exceptionally hardy (-20°C+), provides main vertical rhythm—four tall cones create sentinel backbone establishing strong vertical structure

Supporting Rhythm (3 cones):

  • 3× Medium Cones (90-110cm height)
  • Same species as tall cones (maintains consistency)
  • Medium conical forms creating supporting vertical rhythm, mature specimens 8-12 years old, base diameter 40-60cm, provides transitional layer between tall sentinels and small foreground—three medium cones maintain rhythm whilst creating height variation

Foreground Accents (3 cones):

  • 3× Small Cones (50-70cm height)
  • Same species as taller cones (maintains consistency)
  • Small conical forms creating foreground punctuation, mature specimens 5-8 years old, base diameter 30-40cm, provides foreground rhythm completing graduated progression—three small cones establish baseline whilst allowing taller sentinels to dominate

Species Characteristics:

If choosing English Yew (Taxus baccata):

  • Dense dark green evergreen foliage, exceptionally hardy (-20°C+), very slow-growing (maintains size well with minimal trimming), traditional choice for formal cones, potential for red berries autumn-winter on female plants if male pollinator nearby, soft foliage (not spiny), classic British topiary species

If choosing Ilex Crenata (Japanese Holly):

  • Small dark green glossy evergreen leaves, exceptionally hardy (-20°C+), moderate growth rate (faster than Yew but controlled), more compact habit, small black berries autumn (less ornamental than Yew's red berries), slightly spiny but less aggressive than Common Holly, contemporary alternative with similar aesthetic

Both species: respond excellently to clipping, maintain conical form well, provide year-round evergreen structure, virtually pest/disease-free.

Optional Vertical Accent:

  • 5× Molinia caerulea 'Transparent' (2L pots)
  • Role: See-through grass echoing vertical cone forms
  • Exceptionally vertical arching grass 120-150cm height, airy transparent flower stems August-October (hence 'Transparent'—can see through stems creating ethereal effect), blonde foliage autumn-winter providing continued structure, upright vertical habit echoes cone forms whilst introducing movement and transparency, optional but recommended for softening rigid cone geometry whilst maintaining vertical emphasis

HOW THE COMPOSITION WORKS:

Vertical emphasis through conical repetition: cones are inherently vertical forms (height exceeds width, pointed apex draws eye upward). Ten cones in graduated heights create forest of verticals—some tall commanding attention, others medium maintaining rhythm, smallest establishing foreground. This creates powerful vertical emphasis transforming horizontal garden space into vertical composition.

Graduated heights (4-3-3 at tall-medium-small): more tall cones than medium or small—this differs from graduated sphere/cube collections which favour smaller sizes. The abundance of tall sentinels creates commanding vertical presence rather than gentle progression. Four tall cones establish strong backbone, three medium and three small support without diluting vertical impact.

Sentinel aesthetic: cones positioned along boundaries or within spaces function as sentinels—vertical guardians marking territory, defining space, creating formal structure. Unlike spheres (static, contained) or cubes (orthogonal, grounded), cones reach upward suggesting aspiration, growth, permanence. This quality makes cone collections particularly suited to boundary planting, formal divisions, memorial gardens.

Winter structure exceptional: cones maintain sharp definition through winter (unlike deciduous shrubs losing form). Pointed apexes particularly effective snow-covered or frost-rimmed—winter transforms cones into natural sculptures. This collection specifically chosen for winter interest—evergreen foliage, strong form year-round, unaffected by seasonal change.

Optional Molinia provides subtle enhancement: whilst composition works as cone-only installation, adding transparent Molinia creates compelling contrast—rigid cones vs. swaying grasses, solid geometry vs. transparent stems, evergreen permanence vs. seasonal change (grass flowers, autumn blonde colour, winter structure). Molinia's exceptional verticality (120-150cm upright stems) echoes cone forms whilst introducing movement and lightness preventing composition appearing too heavy or rigid.

POSITIONING FLEXIBILITY:

Cone collections offer particular positioning approaches:

  • Linear boundary: Position along property boundary, garden division, or pathway edge creating formal evergreen hedge alternative
  • Symmetrical pairs: Flank gateway, entrance, or focal point with matching cone pairs
  • Asymmetric scatter: Distribute throughout space creating vertical punctuation
  • Formal grid: Position in geometric grid creating ordered sentinel array
  • Graduated line: Arrange by height creating progressive rhythm (tall → medium → small or varied pattern)

Cones work particularly well as boundary planting—their vertical emphasis defines space without creating solid visual barrier (unlike hedge), allows views between sentinels whilst establishing formal structure.

Care

ESTABLISHMENT PHASE (First 6-12 Months):

Topiary (Yew or Ilex Crenata Cones):

  • Watering: 2-3× weekly during summer. If containerised permanently, consistent moisture essential (tall cones in containers dry faster). If planted in-ground, establish deep watering first season then drought-tolerant. Winter: minimal watering.
  • Feeding: If containerised: feed annually spring (slow-release shrub fertiliser, 50g per small cone, 100g per medium, 150g per tall). If in-ground: minimal feeding required.
  • Staking: Check stakes regularly (if used for tall cones). Tall specimens vulnerable to wind rock until roots establish.
  • See Complete Care Guide for comprehensive Yew/Ilex maintenance.

Molinia (if included):

  • Watering: 2-3× weekly first spring/summer. Water deeply. By Year 2, exceptionally drought-tolerant.
  • No feeding required—excess fertility causes floppy growth defeating vertical emphasis.

ONGOING MAINTENANCE (Year 2 Onwards):

Topiary (Yew or Ilex Crenata Cones):

  • Watering: If containerised: 2-3× weekly summer, minimal winter. If in-ground: drought-tolerant, water only extreme drought.
  • Feeding: If containerised: once annually spring. If in-ground: minimal or no feeding required.
  • Pruning: Once annually late May-early June for Yew (slow-growing), twice annually (May + August) for Ilex Crenata (moderately fast-growing). Critical for cones: maintain pointed apex and tapered profile—cones only work if apex sharp and sides taper smoothly from base to point. Trim from bottom upward working in sections around cone, maintain straight taper (avoid bulges or waisting), ensure apex terminates in sharp point (not rounded top). Use shears or hedge trimmer, step back regularly checking profile from distance. Maintain height distinctions—tall remain 130-150cm, medium 90-110cm, small 50-70cm. See Pruning & Trimming Guide for cone-specific techniques.
  • Container maintenance: If containerised permanently, top-dress annually spring. Every 5-7 years, consider root-pruning or repotting tall cones if growth restricted.

Molinia caerulea 'Transparent' (if included):
Very low maintenance. Exceptionally drought-tolerant—rarely needs watering established. No feeding required (keeps growth vertical and sturdy). Leave standing through winter—blonde dried foliage and transparent stems provide exceptional winter structure November-March, particularly beautiful backlit by low winter sun. Cut back to 10-15cm from ground late winter/early spring (March) before new growth emerges. Divide every 7-10 years spring only if centre dying out. Virtually pest/disease-free. Provides vertical echo essential for softening rigid cone geometry whilst maintaining upward emphasis.

CONE COLLECTION MAINTENANCE PHILOSOPHY:

This collection prioritises vertical structure and evergreen permanence—maintenance supports sentinel presence and winter interest. Key principles:

  • Sharp apex essential: Cones only work if apex terminates in point—rounded tops destroy conical form (transforms cones into vague mounds)
  • Smooth taper critical: Sides must taper evenly from base to apex—bulges or waisting compromise geometric purity
  • Maintain height distinctions: Tall cones must remain distinctly taller than medium, medium taller than small—prevents size categories merging
  • Winter structure valued: This collection specifically chosen for winter interest—maintain forms through winter (no autumn cutback), appreciate snow-covered or frost-rimmed cones as natural winter sculptures
  • Boundary definition: If using as boundary planting, maintain consistent form and spacing creating unified linear rhythm
  • Vertical emphasis: All maintenance decisions support upward emphasis—maintain pointed apexes, appreciate vertical grass companions, resist horizontal additions

Reward: commanding vertical presence, evergreen structure year-round, exceptional winter interest (cones maintain sharp definition through cold months), sentinel aesthetic creating formal boundary or accent, timeless design with architectural gravitas, ages gracefully becoming more refined with maturity.

Planting & Positioning

SITE REQUIREMENTS:

Light: Full sun to partial shade. Both Yew and Ilex Crenata tolerate wide range of light conditions. For boundary planting or linear arrangements, consistent light preferable (avoids lopsided growth). Cones maintain better definition in good light—avoid deep shade.

Soil: Well-drained, average fertility. Both species exceptionally adaptable. Yew tolerates wide pH range (5.0-8.0), clay to sandy soils, dry to moist conditions (not waterlogged). Ilex Crenata similar adaptability, slightly prefers acidic to neutral (5.5-7.0) but tolerates wider range. For containerised cones remaining in containers permanently, ensure adequate drainage.

Space: Depends on positioning approach. Linear boundary: minimum 10-12m length (spacing 100-120cm between cones). Grid arrangement: 4m × 3m minimum. Consider mature base spread (tall cones 60-80cm diameter, medium 40-60cm, small 30-40cm)—allow adequate spacing preventing bases touching when mature.

POSITIONING APPROACHES:

Approach 1: Linear Boundary (Sentinel Edge)
Position 10 cones in line along boundary, pathway edge, or garden division:

Graduated Pattern:

  • Pattern: Tall-Medium-Small-Tall-Tall-Small-Medium-Tall-Small-Medium
  • Spacing: 100-120cm between cone centres
  • Total linear span: 10-12m
  • Creates rhythmic boundary with varied height creating visual interest whilst maintaining vertical emphasis

Height-Grouped Pattern:

  • Section 1: All 4 tall cones grouped (creating commanding section)
  • Section 2: 3 medium cones (transitional section)
  • Section 3: 3 small cones (foreground section)
  • Creates clear height progression along boundary

Approach 2: Symmetrical Gateway (Formal Entrance)
Position cones flanking entrance, gateway, or pathway creating formal symmetry:

Configuration A - Matched Pairs:

  • Left side: Tall-Medium-Small-Medium-Tall (5 cones mirrored precisely)
  • Right side: Exact mirror
  • Spacing: 80-100cm between cones along each side
  • Creates formal symmetrical entrance with graduated height progression

Configuration B - Ascending Flanks:

  • Left side: Small-Medium-Tall (ascending height moving inward)
  • Right side: Small-Medium-Tall (mirrored)
  • Central axis: Remaining cones positioned on axis or distributed asymmetrically
  • Creates dramatic height progression focusing attention toward centre

Approach 3: Grid Sentinel Array
Position cones in geometric grid creating ordered sentinel field:

3×3 Grid (use 9 cones, position 10th as offset accent):

  • 3 rows × 3 columns
  • Distribute heights throughout grid creating balanced composition
  • Spacing: 120-150cm between cone centres
  • Scatter tall/medium/small avoiding obvious height-based rows
  • Total footprint: ~4m × 4m

Approach 4: Asymmetric Scatter (Naturalistic Sentinels)
Distribute cones throughout space creating vertical punctuation without rigid pattern:

  • Position tall cones at key locations (corners, focal points, boundary markers)
  • Distribute medium and small cones creating supporting rhythm
  • Vary spacing (80-150cm) creating dynamic rather than uniform effect
  • Works well in larger gardens where cones function as individual specimens rather than unified collection

MOLINIA POSITIONING (if including optional accent):

Position 5 Molinia strategically creating vertical echo:

  • Between cones: Plant in gaps between cones creating transparent vertical layers
  • Foreground clustering: Group around small cones creating textured vertical mass
  • Linear accompaniment: If cones arranged linearly, position Molinia along same line creating double vertical rhythm (solid cones + transparent grasses)
  • Perimeter softening: Position around cone groupings softening edges

Space Molinia 60-80cm apart (5 plants sufficient for small grouping, consider additional plants for longer linear installations). Grass's exceptional verticality (120-150cm upright) echoes cone forms whilst creating see-through effect—you can view through Molinia stems to cones behind creating layered depth.

CONTAINER VS. IN-GROUND PLANTING:

Option 1: Containerised (cones remain in containers)

  • Cones arrive in containers (50-150L depending on size)—can remain permanently containerised
  • Advantages: Mobility (particularly useful for entrance cones—rearrange as needed), controlled growth, easier replacement
  • Containers: Ensure adequate size for tall cones (at least 80-100L for 130-150cm specimens), use quality compost, ensure drainage
  • Staking: Tall cones in containers may need staking in exposed positions (wind vulnerability)

Option 2: In-Ground Planting

  • Remove from containers, plant in prepared ground
  • Advantages: Lower maintenance (less watering), unrestricted root development, permanent boundary installation
  • Planting: Dig holes 1.5× root ball width, ensure top of root ball level with surrounding soil
  • Staking: Tall cones (130-150cm) benefit from staking first 2 years until roots establish (wind vulnerability when newly planted)

DETAILED LAYOUT PLANS:

For visual top-down diagrams showing linear boundary configurations and symmetrical arrangements, see our Architectural Collections Planting Guide.

[View Architectural Collections Guide →]

ESTABLISHMENT CARE (First 6 Months):

Topiary: Water 2-3× weekly first summer. Both Yew and Ilex Crenata drought-tolerant once established but benefit from consistent moisture when establishing. If containerised, check moisture regularly. Feed once spring if containerised. See Complete Care Guide.

Molinia (if included): Water 2-3× weekly first growing season. Despite eventual drought tolerance, needs moisture during establishment. No feeding required. See grass care guidance.

By 18-24 months: Topiary settled (already mature on arrival—maintain conical form through regular trimming), Molinia established creating vertical echo (if included), sentinel rhythm evident with commanding vertical presence.
