Guides to Help You Plan
Bought as a pair.Backed like one.
Six things in the box that aren't plants.
N° 01
Twins, not just two
Your two trees are chosen and grown side by side, not picked off a bench on dispatch day — matched for height, for tier spacing and for the tone of the foliage, so the symmetry is grown rather than approximated.
N° 02
Your twins' certificate
A digital certificate of authenticity travels with every pair, naming your two plants and recording the date they were matched. It's a small thing. It also tells you exactly what you own.
N° 03
You see your pair first
Before the pallet is built you receive your pair's quality-control certificate — origins, dimensions and six photographs of your actual two plants — with 24 hours to review it before dispatch.
N° 04
Care without the guesswork
Grower-written guidance for the species you've chosen: when to trim, what to feed, what to ignore, and what the first winter should look like. Written by the people who clipped them.
N° 05
Upright, palletised, called ahead
The pair travels standing up on its own pallet — never boxed, never laid flat — with a dispatch email giving your estimated delivery date and a call from the driver about an hour before he turns in.
N° 06
They thrive or we step in
Six months of backing on every plant, and unlimited grower support long after that. The full terms, numbers and exclusions are set out immediately below — no asterisks.
Promises withnumbers attached.
The terms, in full — no asterisks a lawyer would love.
10cm
The Matching Guarantee
Your two plants will never differ in height by more than 10cm. That is the whole promise, and it is measurable on the doorstep with a tape.
If the pair that arrives isn't matched, email hello@topiarytwins.co.uk within 7 days of delivery, subject line “Matching Guarantee Claim – [order number]”, with a photograph of the two plants together. Claims are resolved within 24 hours, and the resolution is your choice: a replacement pair, or a full refund.
6 mo
The 6-Month Thrive Guarantee
If one of your plants fails to thrive in its first six months, we replace it at 50% of the single-plant cost. Worked example: a £1,000 pair is £500 a plant, so the replacement costs you £250. Eligibility is reviewed within 48 hours of your email — subject line “Thrive Guarantee Claim – [order number]”.
One honest exclusion: if both plants fail, the guarantee doesn't apply. Two identical failures point at the site rather than the stock — drainage, wind, a buried rubble layer — and swapping the plants would only repeat the problem. That is exactly the conversation Lifetime Care Support exists to have, and we'd rather fix the ground than sell you the same outcome twice.
Life
Lifetime Care Support
Unlimited email guidance from the people who grew your pair, answered within 24 hours, free, forever. Send a photograph of a worrying patch, a question about timing, or a picture of the shears you're about to use — there is no expiry date and no limit on how often you ask.

Where three tiersearn their height.
Height without bulk. Three positions. One pinned frame. Scroll.
Either side of the front door
This is the multi-ball's home ground. Three tiers on one clear stem give a doorway height without bulk: the footprint of a single pot, with a frame that climbs beside the door instead of sitting at its foot. Stand at the gate and read the frontage as one shape — the two trees should line up tier for tier across the threshold, which is exactly what they were matched for. Then give them room: keep the outer edge of each container at least 60cm from the door frame, or 70–80cm if you want it comfortable, and clear of the door swing and the path you actually walk, so nobody edges round them with the shopping. Gold lifts dark brick, render and painted timber; blue sets off warm brick; emerald and glossy privet green sit quietly against anything. The rest of our front door plants are built around exactly this move.
Framing a gate, a path or a drive
Wherever a route changes — a gate in a garden wall, the point where a path leaves the pavement, the foot of a drive — a pair stood either side turns the opening into an arrival. The stacked silhouette reads clearly at a distance and in every season, which is why a multi-ball pair makes such a natural driveway marker: the three tiers register from the road. Set the two trees square to the opening and at the same distance from it, so their tiers read level from the approach, and keep them clear of the gate's swing and of opening car doors. Against old brick or a dark hedge, the gold of Gold Rider or the blue of Arizona cypress gives the strongest contrast. Scale it up with the driveways and pathways collection.
Terraces, courtyards and contemporary planters
The tiered form suits clean-lined, modern settings and large containers. A pair either side of sliding glazing, or on the corners of a terrace, gives loose planting some geometry to lean against, and in a courtyard or patio a multi-ball is a sculptural alternative to a standard lollipop, with more presence per stem. Your trees arrive in nursery pots sized to the plant, so the planter is your choice — size it to the tree rather than the space. Weight earns its keep here, because a single stem carrying three heads catches the wind: choose a heavy, frost-proof planter with real drainage holes, and pot feet from October. Sizing, compost and feeding are all in the topiary in pots guide.
What clients noticea season in.
The pair softened the entrance without losing the architecture. It still reads as a designed front — just a kinder one.

Your multi-ball pair.Straight answers.
What arrives when I order a multi-ball pair?
Two hand-matched multi-ball trees — each one straight stem carrying three graduated clipped balls, largest at the base, with clear stem showing between the tiers — in nursery pots sized to the plant. The charcoal planters in our photographs are there for styling: your pair arrives in its nursery pots, ready for planters of your choosing, or for planting straight into the ground in spring (March to April) or autumn (September to mid-October). Before dispatch you receive the pair's quality-control certificate; with the trees come a digital twins' certificate and grower-written care guidance for the species. The pair travels upright on its own pallet — no boxing, no bending — with free kerbside delivery to UK mainland addresses, so plan how you'll move two well-grown trees from the kerb to their spot before the pallet lands.
Is the multi-ball height measured with or without the pot?
Without. Every height on these listings is the tree itself, measured from the compost surface to the top of the top ball — the pot is extra, so add your planter's height to see where the top tier will finally sit. The bands run from 90–110cm up to 170–200cm: Gold Rider comes in 90–110, 130–150 and 170–200cm; Thuja Smaragd in 110–130, 130–150 and 170–200cm; Delavay privet and Blue Arizona in 130–150, 150–170 and 170–200cm. Each ball is roughly 20–50cm across, in proportion to the height you choose, and the largest is always at the base.
How are the tiers matched across the two trees?
By hand, tree against tree. Your two are selected for tier spacing, ball diameter, stem straightness and colour — the warmth of Gold Rider's gold, the depth of Thuja's green, the gloss of the privet, the blue of Arizona cypress — so the three tiers line up level across the pair and the balls graduate in step. Heights are guaranteed to differ by no more than 10cm. Before your pallet is built you receive your pair's quality-control certificate — origins, dimensions and six photographs of your actual two trees — with 24 hours to review before dispatch. If the pair that arrives still isn't right, email hello@topiarytwins.co.uk within 7 days of delivery with the subject “Matching Guarantee Claim – [order number]” and a photograph of the two together. Claims are resolved within 24 hours, with a replacement pair or a full refund, whichever you prefer.
Should I clip the top ball or the bottom ball first?
The top. Start at the top ball and work down, going right round each ball as a sphere of its own, so the clippings fall clear of the tiers below instead of lodging in them. Trim lightly first, then closer. As you go, keep the graduation: the bottom ball stays the widest and the top ball never outgrows it, because a narrower top lets light reach the lower tiers — and shaded conifer foliage browns from the inside. Clip in late May and early August; after mid-August, put the shears away. On Gold Rider, Thuja Smaragd and Blue Arizona, never cut back into brown wood, which most conifers won't regrow from; privet is the forgiving one and reshoots even from bare wood. There's a full walkthrough of when and how to trim a ball-shaped plant in the journal.
What do I do about shoots on the stem between the balls?
Take them off as soon as you see them. Rub soft shoots away with a thumb, or snip woodier ones flush to the stem — there's no need to seal the cuts. Left to grow, they fill the clear stem between the tiers, and those gaps are the form: without them, three balls start to read as one lumpy column. The same goes for anything sprouting from the stem below the bottom ball. A look up and down each stem whenever you clip, in late May and early August, keeps the gaps clean.
Can my multi-ball pair live in pots permanently?
Yes — with the right pot and a little routine. Size the container to the tree: a 120–160cm plant needs a 60–70cm container, and at any height a pot at least a third of the plant's height is an absolute minimum, not a target. Fill it with John Innes No. 3 and rely on the drainage holes rather than a layer of crocks, which only holds water above it. Water 2–3 times weekly through summer, for life, and give one spring application of slow-release feed. Top-dress every year and repot every 5 to 10 years, in March or April, led by the signs: roots through the drainage holes, water running straight through, growth stalling. Because a single stem carries three heads, weigh or anchor the pot against the wind, and we recommend keeping a permanent support stake, as for a lollipop standard. The container care and repotting guide has the detail.
How long will my multi-ball pair take to arrive?
Allow 14–21 working days from order, or 21–28 working days in peak season (February to May) — the pair is being selected, photographed and documented during that window, not sitting in a warehouse. Before dispatch you receive the quality-control certificate with six photographs of your actual trees and 24 hours to review it; if we don't hear from you, the pallet is built and dispatched. There's no tracking portal: you get a dispatch email with an estimated delivery date, we can give you a delivery window on request, and the driver phones about an hour before arrival. One tip: don't book a landscaper or contractor until the trees have actually arrived, because dates can move and we can't cover contractor costs if they do. The full terms are on our delivery and returns page.
