Meet the Twins
Meet Cumulo & Alto

Cumulo and Alto are cloud names too — but the friendly, fair-weather kind. Their glossy green spheres gather on several stems like a handful of balloons caught mid-float. Cumulo bunches his a little lower; Alto lets hers ride high.

Ligustrum × jonandrum is the topiarist’s privet — small, polished leaves and fast, dense growth that takes a clip beautifully. The multi-stem form keeps things informal at the base while the spheres above stay sharp: formality with a sense of humour.

Each plant is trained over several seasons, stems selected and spheres clipped for definition. Cumulo & Alto are matched for height, stem rhythm and gloss, so the pair feels like one composition in two pots.

Placement Suggestions
  • Sheltered entrances
Softer and more playful than a formal standard, with the same welcoming symmetry.
  • Courtyards and patios
The layered spheres give year-round structure at seating height.
  • Japanese-inspired schemes
    A gentler, faster-growing alternative to cloud-pruned specimens.
Care & Maintenance
Care & Maintenance

Overall care level: Moderate — fast growth means regular light trims keep the spheres crisp.

Watering

Water when the top 2–3cm of compost feels dry — typically 2–3 times per week in summer. Ensure the pot drains freely; avoid standing water.

Feeding

Feed in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser, with a light top-up in midsummer to fuel regrowth after trimming.

Pruning

Trim the spheres 2–3 times through the growing season — May, July and early September — and keep the stems clean of new shoots. Privet regrows quickly and forgives every cut.

Winter Care

Hardy to around –5 to –10°C. In severe frost, move pots to a sheltered wall and wrap containers to protect roots. Some leaf drop in a hard winter is normal and recovers in spring.

Repotting

Repot every 2–3 years in spring into a container 5–10cm wider, using a free-draining loam-based compost.

Botanical Specifications
Botanical Specifications

Each pair is matched by hand for height, stem count, ball placement, and leaf gloss. Multi-stem privet is naturally individual, so Cumulo & Alto are chosen for shared rhythm — spheres that sit level, stems that lean the same way.

With Every Pair

Bought as a pair.Backed like one.

Six things in the box that aren't plants.

N° 01

Twins, not just two

Your two plants are chosen together, not picked off a bench on dispatch day — matched by hand for height, for stem count and ball placement, and for the tone of the foliage, so the symmetry is selected rather than approximated.

N° 02

Your twins' certificate

A digital certificate of authenticity travels with every pair, naming your two plants and recording the date they were matched. It's a small thing. It also tells you exactly what you own.

N° 03

You see your pair first

Before the pallet is built you receive your pair's quality-control certificate — origins, dimensions and six photographs of your actual two plants — with 24 hours to review it before dispatch.

N° 04

Care without the guesswork

Grower-written guidance for the species you've chosen: when to trim, what to feed, what to ignore, and what the first winter should look like. Written by the people who clipped them.

N° 05

Upright, palletised, called ahead

The pair travels standing up on its own pallet — never boxed, never laid flat — to the kerb, with a dispatch email giving your estimated delivery date and a call from the driver about an hour before the pallet arrives.

N° 06

They thrive or we step in

Six months of backing on every plant, and unlimited grower support long after that. The full terms, numbers and exclusions are set out immediately below — no asterisks.

Guaranteed Twice, Supported Forever

Promises withnumbers attached.

The terms, in full — no asterisks a lawyer would love.

10cm

The Matching Guarantee

Your two plants will never differ in height by more than 10cm. That is the whole promise, and it is measurable on the doorstep with a tape.

If the pair that arrives isn't matched, email hello@topiarytwins.co.uk within 7 days of delivery, subject line “Matching Guarantee Claim – [order number]”, with a photograph of the two plants together. Claims are resolved within 24 hours, and the resolution is your choice: a replacement pair, or a full refund.

6 mo

The 6-Month Thrive Guarantee

If one of your plants fails to thrive in its first six months, we replace it at 50% of the single-plant cost. Worked example: a £1,000 pair is £500 a plant, so the replacement costs you £250. Eligibility is reviewed within 48 hours of your email — subject line “Thrive Guarantee Claim – [order number]”.

One honest exclusion: if both plants fail, the guarantee doesn't apply. Two identical failures point at the site rather than the stock — drainage, wind, a buried rubble layer — and swapping the plants would only repeat the problem. That is exactly the conversation Lifetime Care Support exists to have, and we'd rather fix the ground than sell you the same outcome twice.

Life

Lifetime Care Support

Unlimited email guidance from the people who grew your pair, answered within 24 hours, free, forever. Send a photograph of a worrying patch, a question about timing, or a picture of the shears you're about to use — there is no expiry date and no limit on how often you ask.

Placing The Pair

Three positions. One pinned frame. Scroll.

01

Either side of the front door

Stand at the gate and look at the frontage as one shape. A multi-stem pair frames a door with height and air at once: three stems lift three heads to three levels, so the eye climbs from the low ball to the tall one while the wall behind keeps showing through — presence at the door without the bulk of a solid clipped shape. Turn the two pots until the stems lean the same way and the heads sit level; the pair was matched for exactly that rhythm. Then give it room: keep each container edge at least 60cm from the door frame, 70–80cm if you want it comfortable, and clear of the door swing. The rest of our front door plants are built around exactly this move.

02

A courtyard corner, at seating height

Courtyards are where the form earns its keep, because its heads sit at the heights you actually look from: the low ball beside a bench, the middle one at shoulder height when you're seated, the tall one carrying the line up the wall. A single plant fills a corner without the mass of a solid shape, the splayed stems doing the work; kept together, the pair frames a seat or the step down into the garden. Golden foliage lifts a dark corner where plain green would sink into the wall. Size the pot to the plant rather than the space — a 120–160cm plant wants a 60–70cm container — and the pair carries a courtyard or patio almost single-handedly. At 70–90cm, the Japanese holly pair is the size for a balcony or small terrace.

03

Among grasses, gravel and loose planting

Multi-stem carries its formality lightly, which is why it sits so easily in looser planting. Clipped heads over bare, splaying stems give grasses, lavender and gravel the structure they lack, while the open base lets the planting run right up to the pot. It suits Japanese-inspired schemes, gravel and Mediterranean gardens and large terrace planters: the cool blue-green of Blue Arizona cypress for dry, sunny ground, the cream-and-pink marbling of Pink Marble photinia for pale and pastel schemes. Keep the backdrop quiet so the three heads read as three, and give each plant enough air that no head brushes a neighbour — the gaps are part of the form.

Before You Order

Your multi-stem pair.Straight answers.

How many stems and balls does each multi-stem plant carry?

Three of each. Every plant in your pair rises from its pot on three separate stems, and each stem carries exactly one clipped ball — a tall head, a middle one and a low one — so you see three spheres at three distinct heights, with bare stem showing beneath each. The stems leave the pot from their own points and splay slightly apart, which is what keeps the heads clear of one another. Ball sizes vary naturally from stem to stem; that variation is part of the form, and it is matched across the pair rather than ironed out. It is also what separates a multi-stem plant from our pom poms, where three to seven spheres sit on one branching framework.

Will the two multi-stem plants be identical, stem for stem?

No — and they shouldn't be. Multi-stem plants are naturally individual: no two grow their stems at exactly the same angle. What we match by hand is height, stem count, ball placement and colour, so the two plants share one rhythm — heads that sit level, stems that lean the same way — and read as companions rather than copies. Height is guaranteed to within 10cm, and before dispatch your quality-control certificate shows you six photographs of your actual two plants. If the pair that arrives isn't matched, email hello@topiarytwins.co.uk within 7 days of delivery with the subject “Matching Guarantee Claim – [order number]”. Claims are resolved within 24 hours, with a replacement pair as standard, or a full refund on request.

How do I stop the three heads growing into one another?

Clip each head as its own sphere, and treat the space between heads as part of the shape — on a multi-stem plant, the gaps are the form. Left to merge, three spheres collapse into one mass and the stems lose their point. Work round each ball separately, keep a clear gap where two heads face each other, and clip in late May and again in early August; after mid-August, put the shears away. The open centre is doing a job too: it lets light and air reach the low head, and on conifers, foliage left in shade inside the plant turns brown. There's a full walkthrough of when and how to trim a ball-shaped plant in the journal.

Should I rub off new shoots on the bare stems?

Yes, as soon as they appear. The bare stems are half the look, and a shoot left to grow on one thickens into a branch that blurs the line between stem and head. Rub young shoots off with your thumb while they're still soft, or snip them flush with secateurs once they've firmed up, and run your eye down all three stems whenever you water through the growing season. The same goes for anything rising from the base: if it isn't one of the three stems or part of a head, it comes off.

How big is each ball on a multi-stem plant?

It depends on the species and the size you choose, and it varies from stem to stem on the same plant. As a guide, Delavay privet and Gold Rider carry balls of roughly 20–40cm across, Pink Marble photinia and Blue Arizona cypress roughly 25–45cm, and the compact Japanese holly roughly 15–30cm. Overall heights are measured from the compost surface to the top ball, not including the pot: 70–90cm for the holly; 110–130cm or 150–170cm for the privet; 130–150cm for Gold Rider; 130–150cm, 150–170cm or 170–200cm for Pink Marble; and 170–200cm for Blue Arizona.

Does the species change how I care for my multi-stem pair?

The routine is shared: clip each head in late May and early August, water pots 2–3 times a week through summer — check with a finger and water when the compost is dry at 5cm — and give one slow-release feed in spring. Most species then add one rule of their own. Gold Rider and Blue Arizona are cypresses: never cut back into brown wood, because it won't regrow. Delavay privet regrows fast and forgives a misjudged cut, even from bare wood. Pink Marble photinia throws the odd all-green shoot; cut it out completely, or back into variegated growth, or it will outgrow the marbling. Japanese holly takes the same two clips, late May and early August. For winter, Gold Rider is hardy to about −15 to −20°C, Japanese holly −15 to −18°C, Pink Marble −10 to −15°C and privet −10 to −12°C; Blue Arizona is very cold-tolerant once established, provided its pot drains freely and it is sheltered from cold, drying winds. In northern England and Scotland, wrap every pot every winter; in the Midlands and the south, wrap privet and terracotta pots when below about −8°C is forecast. The winter protection guide has the method.

What do I see before my multi-stem pair is dispatched?

Your pair's quality-control certificate: a record of the plants' origins and dimensions, with six photographs of the actual two plants allocated to you — so you see the stems, the heads and the match before anything leaves. You then have a 24-hour review window to come back to us with anything; if we hear nothing, dispatch proceeds as planned. Allow 14–21 working days from order, or 21–28 in peak season (February to May). After that comes a dispatch email with an estimated delivery date — we can give you a delivery window on request — and the driver calls about an hour before the pallet arrives; there is no online tracking portal. Once the pair is home, the 6-Month Thrive Guarantee takes over: if one plant fails to thrive, email hello@topiarytwins.co.uk with the subject “Thrive Guarantee Claim – [order number]” and we review eligibility within 48 hours.
